slemp33...boy, I know how you're feeling...My husband won't let me gate my yorkie in the kitchen. He's afraid she'll chew the cabinets or other things. I think putting your dog in the kitchen is a very good idea. Mine HATES her crate so much. and we're gone all day, too. My dog picked up going on the puppy pad right away, so I don't know what to tell you other than to keep putting him on it and praising him and giving him a treat when he does finally go. I know there's a spray you can put on the pad that's supposed to help them learn to go on there. My problem is I want her to learn to go outside and only use the pad if we're not home for any amount of time. Mine's getting much better though. I've even been leaving her in the house for about an hour once a day and she's been just fine. Of course in Sept, when I go back to school, then it will be a different story. Back to being gone ALL day. I dread that.
