| Urinating outside? Hi, We have a 17 week yorkie and he had his last shots a week ago therefore we are slowly taking him outside. He likes being outside (we live in an apartment) but he has yet to go #1 or #2 outside. He waits until we bring him inside then he runs on the wee wee pad and urinates. How can we teach him to both urinate outside and also inside? Also, I taught him how to sit, but it's hard to teach him how to Stay, and sometimes when I want him to come to me, when I reach down to grab him he seems to run away (as if he was playing), how can I stop that? Thanks |

| Hi back at ya!! LOL we have the same problem with Princess Sophie. Not the going outside problem (she has pee'd outside and my DH says he "thinks" she poo'd but not sure. I don't how you can miss that??) but the running away when we reach out to pick her up. I think that when they do this, they know that we are going to pick them up and they just aren't ready. They are still wanting to play, maybe hoping you will play with them or play chase. LOL I was thinking about this about a week ago and realized that every time I reached for her, I was picking her up. I don't want her to run from me either so I started spending more time on the floor with her and her toys and now, when I reach for her, if she's not ready and backs up, I just let her go. Now if it were an emergency I would certainly pick her up if she wanted it or now but I really don't want her to back away from me when I want to pick her up, here in the house or outside when the weather is warmer. There are others that will be able to offer you better advice as I'm not sure if what I'm doing is right or not? Good luck, I think we can both learn something here!

| Thanks, I don't know, perhaps you are right about the picking up part. Once he is 6 months old I will sign up for obedience training classes and hopefully we can teach him something. He seems to listen to me when I say "NO" or when he knows he did something wrong he looks at me, while he does not listen to my wife as much. He caught ringworm in 8 spots and we have been dealing with that for about 2 weeks, I am hoping the hair will regrow when it's all over since it's on top of the nose, behind the ear, and on the left side of the face, the Vet said that usually it resolves on it's own as the immune system gets stronger and just to wash him with the medicated shampoo and over over the counter fungal creme 2XDay for 14 days. Anyhow back on topic, I will try to take him outside as soon as he wakes up and see if that works with the urinating outside. |

| Lots of treats. I use boiled chicken. I have teddy sit, then I say "stay" I give him constant treats while in the stay position. We have been working on this and are up to a minute. Use the same with come. Lots and lots of treats at this age. Teddy will now come to me from anywhere. |

Everytime I say SIT, he sits and raises his paw, I than give him a treat. I tried the STAY command, and I showed him the treat, said "SIT", than I said "STAY" and used a hard gesture as if blocking someone, and I said "STAY" non stop as I moved back about 3 to 4 feet, about 3 out of 10 times he stayed and when I said "COME" and use a hand gesture he came and I gave him a treat. When he moved I just moved him back to the spot and tried the process over. Should I just make him "STAY" and keep saying it over and over and be right next to him giving him treats, or should I move away further and further and than tell him to come (and if he does give him a treat)? Also, do you still keep him in a play pan at this age? He usually goes on the pad but occasionally in the kitchen or in the hallway he will urinate. | Say the "stay" command only once, remain right in front of and give treats while he is sitting in front of you. Do not try to attempt to move around until he can stay for over a minute and then start with one step back and treat when he stays. Most people in my class after four weeks can only take a couple steps away. This is a hard command for little dogs to learn so patience, lots of treats and go at their pace. You want him to think sitting still is the best thing in the world. Also use a command to stop the stay such as ok, break, let's go. So he doesn't confuse it with other commands and learns he can not move from the spot until he hears the magic word. They have short attention spans so this hard for them to learn. |

| With apartment living I would let him go on a pad and invest in washable potty pads. A dozen of them will do you good for years. Later he will go outside during walks and outings but being trained to go inside on a washable pad while living in a apartment is fantastic and stress free!

| I got lucky and didn't have this problem. However, I think if you out wait them to pee or poop, they will do it outside. When he didn't peep or poop outside, I would bring him in and put him in his airline carrier or hold him so he wouldnt pee on his pee pads and then I would take him back outside again. Plus,I taught him the word potty and pee-pee when he was going on his pads. So I would stand there and repeat it to get him to go when we were outside. He just put 2 and 2 together. On walks he just does it. I don't know how he learned. He might have smelled other dogs or something. At first he didn't go on walks only in his dog run. Then he just did and I praised him.
