I think that when they do this, they know that we are going to pick them up and they just aren't ready. They are still wanting to play, maybe hoping you will play with them or play chase. LOL I was thinking about this about a week ago and realized that every time I reached for her, I was picking her up. I don't want her to run from me either so I started spending more time on the floor with her and her toys and now, when I reach for her, if she's not ready and backs up, I just let her go. Now if it were an emergency I would certainly pick her up if she wanted it or now but I really don't want her to back away from me when I want to pick her up, here in the house or outside when the weather is warmer.
There are others that will be able to offer you better advice as I'm not sure if what I'm doing is right or not? Good luck, I think we can both learn something here!

Don't let her turn you picking her up into a chasing game. I think it's good that you realize she may just think you want to pick her up and doesn't want to go yet. However, when she gets older running away will be not so good especially for these little guys. When she runs away don't chase her, but make a serious face and get her and do it everytime. Thats how they learn I better just go because their gonna get me anyway. I realized that I was picking my guy up a lot too. Its so hard NOT TO!
