| In DESPERATE Need of Potty Training Help!!! Hi, I just adopted a puppy and I've only had her since Saturday. She is 4lbs and 21 weeks old, her birthday is Jan. 13. I've been doing research on every single thing you could think of before I brought her home, so I thought I would be very prepared on how to train her and stuff, but she won't potty where and when I want her to! I originally wanted to do the outdoor potty training method, and so I had a set schedule for her. 7am: wake up potty 12-1: lunch, potty 5: dinner, potty 1030: before bed potty 11: bedtime And in between those times, if she took naps right after I'd take her out to potty and after we play. HOWEVER she doesn't potty when and where I want her to! I read that dogs should have a natural instinct when you want them to potty but she doesn't seem to have it. The only time she would potty correctly is her first potty, the wake up potty, probably because she's been holding it in for so long. I tell her good job and reward her with a treat so she knows this is a good thing but she doesn't keep it up for the rest of the day. I tried the pee-towel trick, where you'd leave a towel with her pee scent on it so she'd know to pee in that spot but that doesn't seem to work. I bring her outside each time I want her to potty, wait with her for over 30 minutes and I bring her inside thinking she doesn't need to potty, the second I open the door she runs in and pees on my carpet.... what the heck.... Sometimes when I catch her about to pee, I swoop her up and bring her outside right away and still she doesn't potty. I know she has to, because she just tried to but she's holding it in! Then I get fed up because I've been outside for so long let her in and she potties on my carpet. I need help, YT Help please! I know I have to be patient but how come she doesn't know I want her to potty in a specific area?

| When I potty train I keep them confined to one area, like the kitchen & take them out about every hour or so & WHILE they are in the act of doing pee or pood & tell them good boy/girl go poo/poop so they connect the act with the word. Usually after only a few days they get the connection & will start to potty on command. Also when your in the house & about to take him/her out say lets go outside & go potty. Another thing you can do is get potty bells to hang on the back door so after awhile when they get the hint, they will go to the door & ring the bell to go out & I always give a treat when they have done their business outside then when we come back inside I give the treat. I have rescued many, many dogs of all ages & never had a problem with this method. And they do not have natural instincts to potty when & where you want them too, just like toddlers, they need to be tought where & when to go. Welcome to YT ! | Hi and Welcome to YT! Your plan looks good, the only thing I can see is you need to teach her a verbal command as she's going potty, like "Go Potty" , that way she'll know what to do when she hears those words. Also when you bring her in, carry her in and put her in a confined area (gate the kitchen off) with a peepad or newspaper, so when she 'goes' you can reinforce the verbal command with the action, and treats after, always. It takes a few times done correctly, before they really 'get it', even though she may be going through the motions at times. You'll know when she truly understands bc it's like a little light bulb going off in their heads and you'll see a change in her eyes when she looks up at you for her treat. Then she may start fake peeing to get the treat, lol. I couldn't catch my girl 'going ' on the pad for two months, finally I rewarded her when she peed on the rug, just to be able to begin the training association of the verbal command with the action, and I'd work on the 'where' later. Sounds crazy, I even questioned myself , thinking I hope I'm not making a bigger problem, lol. It worked, when I did then catch her using the pad and I said 'go potty' and gave her the treat. But I went a little beyond that, I said " Oh yes! Yeah, you did it! WooHoo! Good Girl! Yay!" and clapped my hands. She noticed that I was overly excited and happy with her. Let us know if this helps... and most of all be patient with her. Yorkies learn best when you reward/praise what you want them to do, and ignore the bad, they really don't 'get' punishment. So it's more of a matter of making the good happen (even if you have to stage a situation), so you can reward them, and they begin to understand what it is that you want them to do.

| Should I tell her "potty/pee/poo" while she's peeing in an area I do not want like the carpet since she's already done it anyway? Or should I rush and carry her outside? I've read about potty bells and really want to do that but it seems hard! But if your dogs could do it I'm so excited to try to teach mine to do that too! Should I teach her while still teaching her potty training or should I start potty bells after she's already learned the basics? &Thanks! YT has helped me a lot so far, even though I've been a lurker for a weekish

| I do the verbal commands "go potty" while she's doing it correctly, I forgot to add that. But since she only does it correctly once a day, I guess it hasn't really registered to her yet .. I think I will try to tell her "potty" even if she's doing it in the wrong spot, kjc, thanks so much! I will update on how it goes soon hopefully it works! I'm excited to start this method now I wrote a reply for you too, lillymae but it didn't go through I guess because I did quick reply? Anyway, I am really interested in potty bells! I read about that but thought it would be too hard to teach her that but since you can do it, I hope I can too! Should I start potty bells while she's still learning the basics of potty training or after? & Thanks to both of you! I've been lurking on YT for about a week and everything is so helpful! I've learned so much already

| Oh, but when I catch her just starting to pee in the wrong spot, should I carry her to where I want to or should I say "potty/pee/poo" to let her connect the action to the word?

| I have never used the potty bells but others here have & have had great success with them. I would get them ASAP & start her with them while you are training her. |

Potty training can be hard, bc Yorkies are so smart, it's easy to confuse them. Like how can 'Potty' be good and bad? This confuses them, and they may start to hide to potty if they're not sure or start thinking it's bad. IMHO, Potties are always good, it keeps them going where you can see it. Then there's the question, Do you reward a potty that is just off the pad, like an inch or two away from it? I do. Their aim will get better. Also Sapphire is a Poo walker. So I'd have one or two on and one or two off the pad. I figure, she's trying and starts out on the pad, so this is good and as close as we can get at what I want to see happen for right now. Well, actually that was then, now she's narrowed her walking circle and 99% of the time it all goes on the pad. She's also trained to go outside, but I keep a pad down for when she's in heat and inclement weather. Good Luck, and I want to say I'm impressed that you've done your research before getting your pup. I like helping folks, but explaining the very basics over and over again gets old quick! But it has improved my typing skills, lol!

| Haha, sorry about having to explain the basics! I really thought I had it down because I did so much research, but when Lexi came it was harder then I read/watched! She's so very stubborn!

| Lexi did it!!! Thank you so much for everyone's replies and all the threads that I read on here! I am so proud to say that Lexi is officially potty trained! She doesn't pee in the house anymore and when she needs to go she waits by the door I usually take her out to! Or when I want her to go at certain times, I open the door and say "Lexi, go potty" and she does it right away! I am suuuch a proud momma right now!!! She does it on command when I'm at someone else's house or at the park, etc. I am in the process of teaching her poochiebells now so I can know/hear that she has to potty. I am so excited! I will update on poochie bells when she achieves it.

Senior Yorkie Talker | I have a 12 week old male & he didn't take to the pads as well as I wanted him to so now my husband & I take turns but we take him out every 30minutes to an hour! We praise him when he goes outside & as soon as we know he is finished we bring him right inside! We have been doing that for 2 weeks now (we've had him for 2 weeks) & he hasn't had an accident in the house! We play with him or after he naps we take him right outside! We take him out 10 minutes after he eats or drinks anything & keep a close eye on him! We don't get him run of the whole house yet till he is 100 % trusted & understands outside is where he pottys! He sleeps in a crate at night that is all cozy for him & he has never messed in it! They usually will not mess where they sleep or eat at! He goes outside right before we go to bed & will wake us up at about 6 to go out! He lets us know when he needs to go & so if you think jeez why is he/she barking so much he/she is probably letting you know they need to go outside! So good luck but wanted to share what has/is working for us & Jaxson! |

| I am sorry to laugh because it is frustrating and messy but remember that you have a baby, an older baby at that. We used crate training and Housebreak Your Dog in 7 Days. You can download that onto your kindle. All in all I have to say that even though right now you are going crazy it does improve w/ time. You've only been at this for a week or so, it will take time. We went through this with Brutus and hes still not 100% yet. Let me know how you are doing. We'll be thinking of you. |
