When I potty train I keep them confined to one area, like the kitchen & take them out about every hour or so & WHILE they are in the act of doing pee or pood & tell them good boy/girl go poo/poop so they connect the act with the word. Usually after only a few days they get the connection & will start to potty on command. Also when your in the house & about to take him/her out say lets go outside & go potty. Another thing you can do is get potty bells to hang on the back door so after awhile when they get the hint, they will go to the door & ring the bell to go out & I always give a treat when they have done their business outside then when we come back inside I give the treat.
I have rescued many, many dogs of all ages & never had a problem with this method. And they do not have natural instincts to potty when & where you want them too, just like toddlers, they need to be tought where & when to go. Welcome to YT !
