| Woes of being a first time pet owner. So my little gizmo is finally back to perfect health, after dealing with kennel cough, yeast in the ears, and parasites in his stool I'm exhausted! The little guy loves to play but has too much energy for me. I am having some problems training him as my girlfriend and I have 2 different views on training. I go with my way and she goes with hers. As for how he is learning is completely up in the air. When we call him he look but doesn't really care for us if he's playing by himself. He LIKES to BITE!! this is a huge problem for my girlfriend because she flinches at anything, if he nips or scratches her I'm afraid she's going to drop him, she has but not from high ground...I hope never for that. She almost did one time but i caught him and he was ok. For me it's not a problem his bite inhibition is decent, doesn't hurt me, but for a girl it's a different story. As for house breaking he's a mess but I still love the little guy. We have him in a crate but I think it's too small so I'm going to buy a xpen and keep the crate as his designated potty area. At the moment he does not pee or poop on the pad 50% of the time, which is a total crapshoot. He likes to fold the pad up and pee and poop on the wrong side or just straight onto the padding of the crate. Lately he's been eating his poop and getting it all over himself, he has schedule baths every other day so he can come out and play. And even when he's out he'll poop and pee on the carpet, even when we pick him up he'll just keep doing his business. I'm losing my mind but his cute little face makes everything ok. I need some advice, suggestions and/or tips. Might have to shell out for a trainer soon, might as well spent 1000+ on vet and med bills what's another few hundred to make him good. Thanks in advance. |

| puppies that don't come from quality breeders often times have behavioral and health problems. not saying that potty training and bite inhibition is easy with even the best bred dogs, but the better the breeder the easier it is. you will have to work extra hard to get this pup to understand not biting and where it's acceptable to eliminate. try crate training methods and for biting try to squeel really loud when bitten like a sibling pup might do. also try NO BITE and replace hands with an acceptable chew toy. good luck. i hope that everything works out and don't give up. even puppies that are brought home before 12 weeks old can be trained, it just takes a lot more patience and hard work than getting them when they are past 12 weeks. |

| I took my first Yorkie Tessie to Petsmart for puppy classe whe she was 16 weeks old, this really helped me and her a lot. She prefers the potty pads, she is 100 % to going outside, She is not crated but is gated off inthe the kitchen / sunroom. Just be very patient and reward for good behavior.

| Gizmo is now 4 months old, I always tell him no bite and ignore him for a minute, he knows he's done wrong and he starts licking me. But when I am work my girlfriend will spanking him if he bites, no wonder she has no idea why he runs away when she calls him. I've only spanked him twice but I don't like doing it. I prefer to pinch his butt or yelp and ignore him. Only spanked him when he did really bite me hard and on purpose. |

| Hitting the dog will only make the biting worse. You can't expect immediate results when teaching the dog bite inhibition, especially if you're not being consistent in the training. Both you and your girlfriend have to be on the same page because if you aren't the dog will never learn. When Teddy used to bite me I would yell "ow" as loud as I could immediately after he bit me. If he did it again I would repeat and stop playing with him. If he was consistently biting me even after yelling "ow" I would grab him and put him in his crate for a minute or two and then bring him back out and start all over again. The crate would be the last resort but you CANNOT just stuff the dog in the crate for long periods of time after biting because he'll forget why he was in there in the first place. A minute is long enough. It took about a month for Teddy to completely "get it" and now he doesn't bite AT ALL. But please, stop your girlfriend from spanking the dog because it is not teaching your dog anything except for it to be scared of you.

| 4 months old is a little young to be shooting for 100% accuracy in potty-training. This breed is notorious for being harder to potty train. I have heard on breeder on this forum say she tells ppl who get a puppy from her not to expect to much until 6 months of age. At this age, it is mostly on you whether he hits the pad or not. You have to be diligent watching him and helping him understand. He does not speak human fluently. As for the biting, please do not hit this dog anymore. That teaches him nothing but to be afraid of both of you. When mine would puppy bite, I would say "No Bite, get a toy" and then pick up one of her toys to play. If your pup was left w his mother longer, his mother would have taught him this, but this job is now up to you and your gf. The pup soon learns, if they want to play w you they need to bring you a toy. I had great success w this method. It takes repetition at first. Don't get upset if they don't remember on their own for while. Just remind them. "No Bite, get a toy" - then pick up the toy and play. He is just trying to engage you and interact w you and does not know how.

| This is such a common question, how can I make my puppy stop biting. Tons of threads on this site about this. In my opinion, A lot depends on the puppy's age. A high pitched yelp works with very young pups. A firm 'No,' and replace with 'Good Toy' for a bit older pup. A gentle muzzle squeeze and a firm 'No' for 5 or 6 mo. old pup. A three finger tap to the side of the jaw and a firm NO for adults. NOTE this is a tap to the side, not a hit or slap ! Do not tap the nose area or under chin, this actually will make them bite down. |
