YT Addict | Transitional Pottytraining!? HELP My little girl Tikka just came home with me 3days ago, she is 8 months old and I believe she just came from a home where she had a fenced yard to roam around by herself and do her business. Unfortunately we don't have a fenced yard so she has to go outside on a leash. My pom Pooter learned this in about 3 days but she is having a much harder time. She will whine at the door to go out but when I take her out she sniffs around the yard and after 5-10minutes she does nothing and we go in. As SOON as we are inside about 1 or 2 minutes later she pees right at the front door. Any suggestions on transitional potty training from free roam to on leash? |

YT 1000 Club Member | Greetings sweet_tikka welcome to the Forum Sounds like you need to use an old "Camping" tactic, given that your little one may just be slow on "getting in the mood". You say you don't have a closed yard, ok... I've used 1/4" Nylon Rope. Tied it to a Screw Eye near the back door, and stretched it overhead to a tree limb, about 25' away from the door. It's runs about 7' off of the ground, so you can walk around under it. I put a Roller Clip on the Rope, and have a spare Leash on it, where I can just take my little one outside, snap the Leash onto it's harness, and just leave him there for as long as needed ! Now, he has a "Doggy Run", where he can sniff and dwell on thinking about pottying, while I'm drinking Coffee inside, and watching him. You probably can get this done for under $10. This help ?

YT Addict | Definitely helps! We live in an Apartment building that is actually fenced in with two other buildings [they are small buildings only about as tall as a 2 story house, 8 apts in each] The only problem with the fencing is the spots were the gate goes so people can walk through are aways open, and they dont close :/ I will have to call my landlord and see if that's okay, might be fine since the lawn mower guy could still go under it on his riding mower. Our apartments yard is actually very large, I just wish those gates closed! lol We have a few trees too! I could probably run a line from my window to the fence since my window is ground level Tikka is just a li'l brat, but it worries me that she's going give herself UT infection from holding is for so long. So literally can hold it for about 8-12 hours at a time, and then when she does go it's a very large puddle to clean on our carpet! lol Good thing is dark coloured and not fluffy!

YT Addict | Dang I thought I wrote a long reply, but I guess not haha! Thanks so much for that idea, I'll have to talk to my landlord, see if that would be okay. Our landscaper would still be able to drive his mower under the line, so I don't see why not. We live in an apartment, but our buildings are fences in, with a VERY large yard, but the only problem is the gates don't close for the walk way to the parking lot so she could easily escape or someone could take off with her. But I could set I line up right out side my window, as my windows are ground level

YT 1000 Club Member | AHHHH...ok, now that I got a better picture of what you have... You could do this too... If the "overhead" line may at some point cause a problem, you could just run it along the side of your building, as long as you didn't run it across someone's door or like that. That way the line would be totally out of the way, and you could keep it a lot closer to the ground....think so ? PS: I SO know 'brat", My Female Puppy Becca IS ONE !

YT Addict | Obviously still getting used to this forum. lol I'm part of a photography on to... Photography On The Net, they use this same set up, BUT your comments appear right away, here everything has to be approved by mod. Silly me! I guess I did reply. And that sounds like a good idea, There is just one door into the building on each side with 4 apartments up and 4 down. I'm definitely going to look into that, I could just stick her right out my window LOL!

YT 1000 Club Member | Ummmm.... out the window... I'm not too sure about that. Keep some amenities in mind... Bowl of water, Easy to see her, A shady place to sit/lay, maybe prop the door open, where she can "retreat" if she gets scared or something like that.

YT Addict | Our apartment's yard would be perfect for that, we have a good 5-6 trees in the yard, one of which is outside our living room, and the building is lined with shrubs/bushes So great set up for having a dog out there I could even put a little house/kennel up against the building where it wouldn't be in the way along with the food/water! Don't woooorry I wouldn't really put her out the window, well maybe I would... Like I said our windows are ground level as in I could walk out my window like a door a lot of people leave their windows cracked so their cats can come and go as they please... I wouldn't drop her from a second floor... how horrible! But I want her to get used to going outside so that eventually I can just take her out on a leash and she'll understand to go so only doors for us! especially with the frigid winters up North here... -40! She needs to be able to do it quick lol. My Pom takes about literally 5-10 seconds to do the do. :P I'm really curious to try this out... I've seen big dogs on lines like this so I know that actually sell the set up, but to be able to make my own for $10-20 would be great!

YT Addict | Update: We aren't allowed to use the tether line method at our building... for whatever reason...grrrr. There's more than enough rooms for it, and no one ever uses the lawn for ANYTHING. But no allowed. I still need help/ideas! She still has yet to go potty outside. We've had to a week and a day now so you can imagine how much pee and poop that's been cleaned up at the front door! My husband really does love her so much it's ridiculous, but he said if she doesn't start going potty outside I'm gonna have to sell her or see if her previous owners will take her back... which I AM NOT GOING TO LET HAPPEN without a fight haha. [not a physical fight... just for all you worry warts... more like a stubborn stance on keeping her no matter what!] I understand where he's coming from since we are renting and will loose our safety deposit and possibly even have to pay more if the carpet gets ruined... which to be honest this blue high traffic carpet could use some updating. Anyways please anyone that's had a similar problem with transitioning like this, help!! I feel so bad she went from having a yard to run free in and do her business and now she's restricted to a leash... mind you I take her on walks and to the ball park to run... but doesn't seem to want to go potty on a leash.

YT 1000 Club Member | Gees !, Building Management can be SO inconsiderate at times... I can fully understand your DH's point of view, AND yours as well ! OK, let's try this from another angle... How about getting that Nylon Rope (about 20' or so), putting a Snap Hook on the end of it, and tying the other end INSIDE your porch/house. This way, you can get the harness on her, snap the XXlong leash on that, and just set her outside, which would limit her movement to the area around your door. You might even prop the door open to allow her to move in and out on her own. Or, you could just close the door (that won't hurt the Rope) and just let her be outside for a while on her own. This way, you can pull everything back inside, still have it immediately ready for re-use, and and Management won't have anything to complain about. Admittedly, you'll have to anticipate her need to potty, but, regular "outings" will probably get her in the mood to do it outside. It may be that your presence is limiting her willingness. Some Dogs just like to do that when someone is looking (Point of View) That "I don't want you to watch me potty", implies Shyness ! Shyness is a LEARNED trait, and implies self-awareness. And WE have the audacity to call them "Dumb Animals", HA HA HA !

YT Addict | Yeah I'm starting to realize her potty times... mind you she is holding it for about 5 hours at a time instead of peeing every 2-3 hours she will let out a VERY large puddle two to three times a day, once around 10am, sometimes around 2pm and for sure again at 10:45pm right before bed. So I've been trying to catch her show her outside. She's usually poops with in 5-10minutes of peeing so at least I'm catching onto her little schedule she's got herself on lol. I'll have to go buy one of those yard steaks and I could just steak it right outside my window by a bush so it's out of the way of the mower and not noticable. I can just walk her outside to clip her on Same idea we just dont have a door that goes directly outside from our apt. it just leading to the hallway then we go out the building door. She's just a stubborn little girl, it's funny she's def. not shy around people or other dogs... but come potty time she wants her privacy I guess! [She's probably used to the privacy since her old owners had a yard, I almost feel like i'm depriving her of a yard, poor little girl!]

YT 1000 Club Member | Ok, I see now that using the window as an exit is needed. I'd still tie the rope inside, never can tell when the Yard People will hit the stake, and then it's not going to hold here in the area. Just snap the rope on her, open the window and set her outside. She might give you a "yap" or two, to let you know she's ready to come back in !

YT Addict | Lol SWHouston! Yeah window exit might be used... but I'll probably still walk her out and around in hopes she'll get used to the idea of being walked to go potty. I'll have to take a picture of her at the window lol... I wont be able to keep it open for her to come back inside because there's a drop to the floor. But she whines to go out, so I'm assuming she is smart and gives the signal to come back in And yea Gidget... that's what I was thinking I will post a pic once I get the yard line Haha I just have this hilarious picture of her sitting outside my window like a cat :P
