Puppy will pee on pad but will not poo (sometimes) - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hi everyone. I'm new to the board and Kimchee is the 1st pet I have ever owned. She's a morkie (maltese - yorkshire) and she's 10 weeks old. She's a tiny little thing (2.6 lbs.).

I've had Kimchee for 1 week now. When I first brought her home I started training her to potty outdoors for a few days. Then I read about indoor training and decided this would better suit us due to the ridiculously cold Chicago winters and my work schedule. I started training her to go on the pads yesterday.

I set up an x-pen around her crate and lined half the floor with pads. In short, she's been doing very well peeing on the pads. Only a few accidents elsewhere.

At night I have her sleep in the crate with the door open so she can come out and do her business. When I woke up this morning I found pee and poo on the pads in her pen. But since then she would only pee on the pads. She's had 2 meals so far.

Just a few minutes ago I could tell that she had to poo because she kept pacing back and forth in the pen and sniffing. She then started getting agitated and whining as if she wanted to poo but was holding it in. It had to be at least 12 hours since the last time she went.

I finally felt bad and took her outside and she went poo right away in the grass.

Is this normal? Should I keep trying to make her poo on the pads? I just don't want her to hurt though

Welcome to YT! I have an 11week old yorkie puppy, her name is Chloe (1lb 11oz). She's been home since Monday. She's been great with pee pads. I thought of taking her outside but it got very cold in Chicago in the past few days so I decided to stick with indoor training until spring. Chloe likes to walk around before doing poo so it is a little difficult to keep her on the pad. She pees on the pad 95%of the time. I believe time and training will solve things and she will poo on the pad when she gets older. When she wakes up and after she eats I put her in her xpen on the pad and watch her until she's done.

Good luck with your new puppy, I am sure Kimchee will make you very very happy.

I think pp pads are wonderful.. but taking them ouside to potty is not going to hurt them but help them train and help youself..
I had kacee oh so tiny in march.. 1.7 pounds at 12 weeks.. but he soon learned that if he had to go he went out and did it fast so he could come in.. he has never been pp pad trained.. and I have to tell you at the time where I lived.. it was often like 40 below.. but I at the time knew nothing about pp pad training..
I have two babys now.. one year and one 10 months.. oh boy mariska goes out to poop in the morning and then runs into the house to use the potty pad to pp.. she is not getting both yet.. majik goes out to pp and comes in many times and goes to the pad to poop...
Oh how different they can be.. each there own behavior.. years ago I had pepsie that would poop on the floor and then wake us up to go out side to ppp.. he was two before he finally got it..
But I try not to stress and they do grow up eventually...
I find it very hard to get all of them to go on the pp pad when I am not home.. and then expect them to go out the doggie door when we are.. I had to be hard for them to understand this.. although I do know those that have trained both ways...

So this morning I woke up and saw that she hadn't poo'd on her pad in the x-pen all night. So I took her downstairs and tied her to a post. I put a pad down next to her. She pee'd on the pad and the 15 minutes later she poo'd on it! So I was thinking that maybe the pad in her x-pen is too close to her crate for her to poo on?

But then she had to go again and I tried to get her to go on the pad which I put in the same spot away from her x-pen. She wouldn't go, she just kept getting agitated and walked back and forth furiously. So after a while I got fed up and took her outside. Then she goes poo outside!

Is there any logic to this? Why does she poo sometimes on the pad and then refuses other times? I'm going crazy here! haha

Should I reward her if she poo's outside? Cause it's still better than going elsewhere in the house.

I am scared of confusing her though.

One thing i have learned is that my yorki never likes the smell of his own poop. He poops on the pad often, but has peeing issues. I noticed that if he poops he will cry and cry intill i come and remove the poop from the pad and throw it in the toilet. He never poops when im not home. In the beginning he ate his own poop, then i started removing it right away and thats when i realised that the smell is the issue. I say keep him locked inside the pen and eventually he'll poop and when he does say good boy and remove it from the pad. If you remove it right away everytime i'm sure he'll start pooping on the pad.

I started my Morkie on pee pads as son as I got her at 12 weeks. It was Jan. in Minnesota and COLD! Belle sleeps in her crate at night and I use to get up with her once during the night to put her on her pee pad to go then back to bed. I keep her crate by my bed and her pee pad is in the den. I have a pee pad holder for it and I also learned that if I put a newspaper on top of the pad (just one big page folder in half) it really saves on pee pads. When Belle pees a lot, I change the paper as she won't pee there again if it's really wet. She was strange about poop'n on the pad though. We finally figured out that she wants a seperate pad to poop on and she does not like to be watched! So, now we have 2 pads and I also put paper on the poop pad. As soon as she poops I pick it up and throw it in the toilet. She has to follow and stand at the toilet to look in and see where it is going!?! She gets a small potty treat as soon as she poops or pees where she is suppose to. She even pees on command now. If we are going somewhere or even to bed, I put her on her pad and tell her to go potty and she does. Sometimes it helps for her to see the treat in my hand. A little incentive never hurt anyone. Good luck and be patient.

I've been rewarding and praising her for pooing on the pad and cleaning the poop right away. I've also been ignoring her when she poops outside.

My problem is Kimchee is so random about pooing. I'll wake up and see some poop on the pad. She does seem to like to poop on the opposite end of the pad where she previously pee'd. Then she'll whine and go crazy so I take her outside because I think she has a lot of pent up energy. Then she'll poop outside! A few hours later she'll just be hanging out in her x-pen and she'll poop on the pad no problem!

I guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and hopefully she'll get it one day. Or maybe when it gets to be winter she'll resent pooing in the cold! On the bright side, she is about 99% with peeing on the pads!

How long did it take your puppies to master indoor potty?

Hi there!
Just wondering how things ended up going with the housebreaking? I have a 12 week old pup and she is using newspapers right now. She will pee and poop on them in the night, but during the day, if I am playing with her in the kitchen, she doesn't like to poop on the paper. She tries to go somewhere else on the floor (and then I have to pick her up and put her on the paper). Are there any tips that you figured out? Any advice would be really appreciated.

I am having the same problem. Bella is doing great with the peeing on the pads (only little accidents) but she won't poop on them. We have her puppy pads in a bathroom on the opposite side of the room with her food, and one puppy pad out in the living room. She won't go on them. I've learned that she usually poops about 10-15 minutes after she eats so I've tried staying in the bathroom with her afterwards, but she won't go (I've stayed for up to an hour). And as soon as she's let out, she'll go poop somewhere else. I've tried not staying in the bathroom with her, but she will just poop on the tile floor and not the puppy pad. If my fiance or I catch her while she's starting to squat, we'll move her to the puppy pad and then praise her for going there, but it doesn't seem to work!

Any more tips?

Hi.. I think I have finally gotten over the hump with Roxy with housebreaking! I used the crate for housebreaking and works everytime! (only ever had big dogs, seemed to take longer with Roxy) I got my puppy at 12 weeks and she used the crate for ALL her sleeping time, as soon as she wakes up..outside she goes..if she pees and poops outside she comes right back in and then we played then back outside and back to the crate for nap time. If she didn't potty we would walk around the yard to tire her back out then back in the crate..if she cried then I would take her back out again. Quite tedious but it works. It may seem cruel but she was only in there when she slept or if I had to go out. I am home all the time so it makes it easier. This is my first time owning a tiny dog but I treat her like my Golden.. but with cute sweaters and coats..lol! People that think that little dogs are prissy and don't like to go outside are very wrong..she loves rain, snow whatever comes.. she is such a mess! I would say 16 weeks and under a crate big enough for just a pad or newspaper and the bed is good. After 16 weeks she seemed to be able to hold it if I wasn't home for 3 hours or more.. because these dogs come in all sizes the length will be different for each. Make sure the spot is in an enclosed area just big enough for her bed and the pad. She will not want to potty in her nice soft bed but pee on the pad. (I saw they sell a reusable pad that looks like grass at bed,bath & beyond) If you want to stick with the pads as she gets older move the pad further away from her bed slowy. These pups are pretty darn smart so I found out! If she had an accident I did take her back to it and tell her bad.. WHY.. they say dont..BUT.. if she did potty somewhere.. she would not walk past it.. she new it was there..they say they forget and won't understand..not Miss Roxy, this was after the 16 week mark... once she realized she was told "bad" in every spot she tried..don't be harsh..they are sensitive little things but she is pottying outside all the time!! And she did try to hide it.. underchairs..behind things..but when she finally realized it wasn't a good thing..outside she goes!! I also use a bell dangling on a door knob close to the ground so before we went out I would get her to touch it with her nose and ring it..then out we would go. Shes not a barker so this works great. I did read this..and it really makes sense.. they said that you should get your puppy to walk to the door..then if you have to pick them up for the steps do so..but they need to learn to walk to the door themselves not be carried outside each time..makes good sense. How else do they learn to go to the door if they get carried out! Roxy is 6 months now and pretty much done with the crate unless we go out. She is even sleeping with us now! Good Luck.. this was just my experience and it worked.

You noticed I didn't give treats just lots of praise I'll tell you why

My neighbor got a boston terrier pup right before I got Roxy and they gave her a treat everytime she pottied outside..well guess what! These little buggers are so smart that the dog started peeing right at her feet in the house to get a treat!!! They did some retraining and she is now on the right track! She couldn't understand why the dog would squat right in front of her in the house!! The dog was no dummy, she wanted a treat!!

Poppy was strange when she was being pad trained too.
She would poop on the pad in her pen then cry until I took it away, if I didnt take it away quick enough then she would eat it. Dogs are clean animals and she wants to keep her den/sleeping area clean.
Maybe the pad is absorbing the smell of the pee so it dosnt bother her so much.
If you eventually want her to be trained to go outside then I see no reason why she cant poop outside if she wants to.

Also if I caught Poppy pooping else where in the house I would pick her up and hold her close to the puddle/poop and say NO BAD! then put her outside. (note: I held her close so she knew what she was getting wrong for, I would NEVER rub her face in it, that is cruel.)
Just keep at it, they do eventually get the message. They are smart dogs and want to please you.

Hi there, not sure if this has already been mentioned because I only skimmed the previous replies, but my dog trainer told me that doggies don't like to poop where they pee. This has been borne out by my experience with Sport. He is housetrained, and prefers to go outside, but we keep a pad handy as well since he's also pad trained. (I like knowing that he can go *anytime* he needs to.) At 11 months, he continues to pee on the pad at least once most days, but he hasn't pooped on the pad for months.

Our trainer advised us to keep separate pads for pooping and peeing, but that didn't really work for us. He just poops outside which works fine since he is on a regular schedule of pooping 2x a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
