Default Food aggression

Tia will turn one year Jan 23rd and is now somewhere over 5 lbs. She was weighed about four/five weeks ago at 5 lbs 3 oz. Ally will turn two years 12/31 at 3 lbs 2 oz. Tia has always been selfish when it comes to toys. She always takes them away from Ally. Ally has learned to drop the toy and run away when she sees Tia coming. Tia is not mean about it, but poor Ally never wins. Ally can pick up one toy and Tia will take it and run, then Ally will pick up another and Tia will grab that one, and so on and so on... I do stop Tia some of the time when I think that it's not a tug-of-war thing. I tell her no and stop her from taking it. Ally is so laid back, she just backs off. Now...I've caught her twice snapping at Ally when it comes to food. They have different dishes, but will sometime go to the same one. Just now, both of them had a bully stick. Ally came up to me looking for hers. I ask her to go find it and she went to Tia, who was in the bed/pillow. Tia started growling/snapping at her. That little girl had both bully sticks and didn't want to share. I told her no and put her in time out. I started using the bathroom as a time out space. Am I doing the right thing. I don't want either of them to get hurt. My baby is getting mean! Please help!

Look at that innocent face!

Please. I know others have had this issue and I don't want this to become a problem. I want to catch this before it becomes a problem. I don't want Tia to hurt Ally. Am I doing the right thing by 'time out' or should I do something else? I know it's a normal reaction for a dog, but I can't allow my babies to snap at each other or anybody else.

Ziva ( 18 months,6 lb) can be just horrid to my Wheaten (10 years,35lb). They started out ok but as Ziva got older little things started to get out of hand. We now feed all meals in separate rooms and treats are enjoyed in their separate crates. A pain I know but it has solved most issues.- Benefits, Ziva eats better as she has a limited time to finish eating (result:more regular potty-ing)And they have less snacks so they eat better food.Good Luck!

Its sound like Tia is showing dominance over Ally by taking all her toys and chewies...Is Tia going over to Ally's food bowl and growling at her?...if she is its a dominance thing...and you need to stop it now before it gets ugly and Ally gets hurt...I would feed both dogs at the same time but do it with you inbetween them so if Tia starts to go over to Ally's bowl you can stop her each time with some kind of command like "leave it" and make her go back to her own bowl...I would do the same with the toys....you should pick up all toys and chewies and put them up somewhere that the dogs can't get to and only get them out when you can supervis...same thing if Tia starts to head over to Ally to take her toy/chewie stop her and say "leave it"...its kinda like showing Tia that you dominate not her or Ally but you...it will take sometime and hard work on your part and you must be consistant with the rules and don't let Tia break them not even once...show Tia that you dominate not Ally and in time she will leave Ally alone...I hope this helps...good luck.

and Tia and Ally are just beautiful...love the pic.

Yes, Tia is showing dominance over Ally. She will even get inbetween me and Ally so Ally can't get to me. She stops her from climbing the pet steps to get up and down from the couch and has to be first at everything (going out the door, greeting people, hugs & kisses from mom and dad). My husband has to hold Tia down so he can give them both hugs and kisses when he comes home from work. Tia is not agressive at this. She just gets in the way. You can tell it's on purpose too.

I do feed them at the same time and I am always there. Tia used to eat hers all, but has slowed way down and doesn't really eat everything. Ally is super picky and thinks it's a chore to eat. They will sniff each other's food, but have their own dish and I point that out to them. There has only been one case of snapping at the food dish when Ally sniffed Tia's food. I can't do the crate thing because Ally would never eat, plus the kennels are upstairs and I don't want to get into moving them up and down the stairs or putting food upstairs either. They do not get lots of treats. I very seldom give them one. Tia must be going thru the terrible teen years. I guess I'll keep up the observation/supervision and show her who the boss is. Is the 'time out' thing okay to do?

Thanks!

I just realized that both of you are from my area. Just an FYI, I'm thinking about have a YT get together this summer. There seem to be a lot of YTrs in our area. Do you think it's a good idea? I have no clue as what to do.

Time out is good as long as you tell Tia no and stop playing with her just walk away and take Ally with you...I think the best thing to do is just supervise and watch them, correct Tia when she try to dominate Ally.

When I first got my girl Bella, she was 11 weeks old now she is 2 yrs old and I had a 12 year old Yorkie Bailey who passed this passed Oct at 14 1/2 yrs old...but when I first got Bella she tried to dominate Bailey. A few week after I got Bella I started noticing Bailey waiting for Bella to get done eating than she would go over and eat her so I started watching them real close at feeding time I seen Bella growl at Bailey when Bailey tried to eat her food at the same time, thats when I noticed all the other little things...Bella taking Bailey toys and chewies and snapping at her when I was trying to love on both, Bella going up stairs first than Bailey same with my little steps I have for them to use to get on the bed at night. I knew than I had a problem...I don't like crates IMO they are only good for traveling to keep them safe...and I did not want to separate them that wasn't going to fix the problem and re-home Bella wasn't an option she was here to stay. so I had to correct Bella's why of thinking and let her know that I was the ruler not her I did the leave it command with her everytime I seen her trying to be dominant over Bailey I said leave it and I would make her leave Bailey alone by removing Bailey and myself and just walking away, it was boring to her to play alone and eventually she got the bigger picture and learned the "leave it" command

I did separate them when I had to go out I didn't want them being together alone at all until Bella was under control cause 2 bitches will fight to the death. It took like 6 mos or more to correct Bella cause she was a pup and VERY head strong LOL but it did work I was able to let them play, sleep and eat together and me go out without separating them, they become the best of buds once Bella knew who was the dominant one and that being me she left Bailey alone.

A get together would be great...somewhere that we can bring our babies too so they can play

Sorry you lost your baby. I can't even think about that and do not know how I would handle it. Thanks everyone for the info. I've been working really hard with Tia today, my devil child, and have asked my husband to watch and help also.

As for the get together, I hope to have one here at my house this coming summer, if we don't have any major problems next year. We've had so many family issues and deaths this year and hope next year goes a lot better. I have a pretty big house with privacy fenced-in back yard. The only issue I would see is that I have a swimming pool. The pups will have plenty of room to run around and play and mommies and daddies can mingle inside, on the screened porch, in the pool, or under the tiki hut/bar. I just need to good some good ideas of what I need to do.

Well my 2 are use to the swimming pool cause I have a 2 story pool home with a privacy fenced in back yard as well...Bella hasn't got in the pool yet but will run around it and loves to be splashed lol and Harley is only 13 weeks right now but in the few weeks we have had him he stays away from the pool...now if my Bailey girl was still here, she would be in the pool she loved the water but hated a bath
