| 4 month old refuses to go outside Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum! Glad to be here We got Cammy last Friday so I realize it has only been a few days but I'm wondering how I can get her to go outside? We take her out very often (and with our other yorkie so she has an example) about every hour or so, immediately after waking up, right after play time, right after eating, etc. and we are out for a good 20-30 minutes. She won't go to the bathroom. As soon as we get in the house though there she is squatting or pooping on the floor. She will not go outside at all. If I put her in her crate, she barks and barks. We got her from a pet store if that makes any difference. We've even tried taking Cammy out by herself thinking that maybe Amy (our other yorkie) is a distraction for her. HELP! We are getting very frustrated! |

No Longer a Member | Did you check out the sticky's? They're very helpful... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...ebreaking.html Remember, start off slow as a 4 month old puppy it's not going to catch on right away. Reward for good behavior but don't punish her for going in the house, if you catch her in squatting position quickly scoop her up set her outside wait for her to go and give her a treat and tons of praise. If you find a mess left behind clean it up immediatly with an enzyme cleaner. Do not rub her nose in it or punish her in any way, she won't get it and assume that you are an unstable person and wont trust you. Don't give up hope, since you already have a yorkie I guess you already know how stubborn these little guys/gals can be. Seems that potty training is the hardest part, I've got my 6mo going on pee pads when I can't be home (going to switch to washables or something else since he discovered they are fun to destroy as well as pee on) and when I'm home I take him out every 2-3 hours. He is older now though, before it would be every 1-2 hours or after playing/eating/drinking. The older they get the longer they can hold it. Don't set your expectations too high, this yorkie has definatly been the most difficult dog I've ever had as far as training goes. But at the same time, it's the most rewarding thing when they finally catch on and do what you want them to. Good luck, there is a ton of good and helpful information on this site that can help you with potty training, and other things as well. P.s. have you taken her to your vet yet? Definatly do an initial check up, espically since you got her from a pet store, who knows where she may have come from. Puppy mill dogs have a lot of genetic problems, and she may have a health issue that you haven't seen yet. And the barking from the kennel could be directly related to spending most of her young life living in a kennel, she want's to be out and having fun, maybe confine her to an expen or gate her in a puppy proof room in your house instead? |

| thank you for your quick reply. I will most definitely check out the other threads. I haven't taken her to our vet yet but we have an appt scheduled for later this week. Our other yorkie potty trained very easily so I was hoping it would be the same with Cammy. I'm not the most experienced at this lol. |

| We are really hoping to not use pads. We'd rather train her just to go outside. Today was a pretty good day. Only 2 accidents! I know she still has a way to go but today I saw some progress. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | do you take her out on a leash or do you just let her roam? I'd have her on a leash and take her to the spot you want her to potty. stand in one spot giving her the area just as far as the leash goes (4-6ft) to potty in. Give your cue word "go potty" and just stand there. do not let her play around, eat stuff in the grass, try to climb up your leg, etc. just stand there and wait. unfortunately since she's from a petstore she's used to going in her cage or on a hard floor so this is a big change for her. my puppy was from a breeder and i still used this method. sometimes i had to stand there for 30 minutes too until she finally went. If she didn't go in that 30 minutes i carried her back inside and put her directly in the crate, not letting her touch the ground anywhere in the house. Waited 5 minutes (to remind her that she has to pee/poop) and then took her back outside to try again. Do not let her put one foot down in the house until she goes potty outside. Stick it out, she will eventually get it.

| I got my pup 3 weeks ago and his first week he was JUST like that. I'd be out for 30 minutes or so but I'd use the same phrase "go potty" and keep saying it and when he goes I'd praise him and give him a little treat. Make sure to ONLY give this treat outside and only for going potty. Now he goes right away as soon as I take him out and he knows that when I pick up his "treat" bag that its time to go outside and he's still just 12 weeks old! I'm still trying desperately to teach him how to let me know when he has to go so I'm still taking him out as much as I can but I'm hopeful he'll catch on Just be patient and he'll go!!

| Pee pads maybe not Dinky was trained on pee pads and now will pee or poo on anything on the floor. So we have switched to outside. Things were going well...now he just wants to play outside. He did not come from a pet store , but from a breeder who had not given him enough experiences. At first he was freaked out by outside. Now, he loves it, but he thinks it's play time.He never wants to come back in now!? He is doing the thing now where we spend 20 minutes outside then he comes in and pees or poos in the crate. So I am going to spend 30 minutes now in the same area until he gets it. I honestly think he figured out that when he goes in the crate that I scoop him up and take him outside. The forum is really helping. I am going to take the advice to take him out for 30 minutes, back in for 5 minutes in the crate and then out again. |

| We bought Cammy a crate this weekend and so far she's doing good with it. We use it only for bed time if we are leaving the house or the "you didn't go when we brought you outside so you don't get to step foot on the floor for a bit" thing. We are also getting her used to a leash. Boy does she hate it! She wont potty if she's on it but if we leave her off she runs after everyone who walks by. But she potties if she's not on it. Its funny too because Amy goes potty right away and is ready to go in and its almost like you can see her irritation that she has to wait for so long for Cammy. |

| If she is from a pet store that means she is from a puppy mill and used to soiling her cage. She has probably never had the opportunity to go outside to potty. You will have to be very patient and persistent with her. |

| 8 Weeks old and wont go! Hi Yorkie lovers! I just got my very first puppy and i've become paranoid of everything. I'm having similar difficulties. Almond wont go #2 when she's outside. She only pees on pads and grass but holds #2 until we come inside. I've picked her up to go outside, but all she does is sniff around or wimper. Please help. The 3am wake ups are killing me at work. Thanks! Whitney |

| Yorkies alike It's been just over a week with DInky, and things are getting better. I've been exhausted because I got the 3 am wakeups, the waiting forever to go when taken outside, then just going in crate. We tried and stopped the pee pads. It really just takes time and the consistency I keep reading about. I think one issue about training is that they don't go number 2 very often, so it's difficult to catch them doing it right or wrong. Yesterday we had a bad start to the day and a good finish. He's got the number 1 thing down pretty well. First he was afraid of outside, now all he wants to do is play. He's still avoiding my hubby unless a treat is involved. He does make progress, but it doesn't always feel that way. But I'm hanging in there! |

| Cammy is doing so good! No accidents for 5 days now! I've really figured out her schedule. And she's starting to pace and go to the door when she needs to go. And its so funny when I go to praise her she's like oh mom geez its no big deal LOL! I know I can't consider her house broken yet but its been so great to see this progress. Oh and she's learning what No means too! |

| Congrats. They are amazing little dogs. Dinky makes progress every day. He still has problems with blankets--thinking that he can pee on them. We'll have to keep them out of his crate until he breaks that habit. We want him to be ready for blankets before the cold weather. He can snuggle happily on the sofa in a blanket, but as soon as it is in the crate, he thinks it is okay. |
