| Marking Inside - How to Stop It sooo, i went to my neighbors' house with bijou and she and peed on their persian rug!!! i went back and cleaned it up, but i am still scared it's ruined. they sometimes have other dogs over, so i think she was trying to mark... i thought she was housebroken ... maybe i am confused, but to me, housebroken means they don't go inside ... anywhere!!! she went there, she's gone inside the pet stores, etc. how can i get her to understand not to go inside anywhere!?! will spaying her help not mark so much!?!? i don't want to have to never let her on the floor anywhere and i don't see how i could ever leave her with other people if she's going to ruin their stuff!!! |

| I do know that just because they are potty trained in one home, a new environment and new mommy throws them off a bit. I know how to train a boy not to mark, but a girl has a different anatomy, so my helpful tools wouldn't work the same. Correct her when you see her wanting to go, unfortunately, that might mean she will get a little pee out before you can stop her. Also, if you take her out and make sure she's on "empty" before allowing her to go into someone else's home, there's less of a chance that she'll pee.

| Good one! If a "no" isn't going to stop her, then you need something else to interrupt her when she's being naughty. Plus, "no" might be ineffective because she heard it so much in her previous home (just a guess). Have you tried picking her up? I did that with Kaji the first time he tried to mark the couch and it scared him so much he stopped mid stream and gave me a crazy look. It was messy but he got the point.

| yes, i did actually pick her up in the middle of it and she immediately stopped, but by the time i actually got to her it was too late, she had let go of enough to make a difference.... until i have another solution, i will have to keep her tethered to me while we are visiting others.... |

My daughter and Spike our 9 yr. old Yorkie moved out of my house in January leaving Bella 10 mths. and Cosmo 4 behind. (both females) Now every-time he comes back 'home' he is lifting his leg everywhere (marking) even though he has been trained perfectly forever! I have been putting diapers on him when he's here to avoid the problem. Any help would really be appreciated!

Oh my, I thought my husband & I were the only ones who had that thought about a 4lb dog. Farrah does the same things you are describing. Unfortunately, other than tethering, I do not know of a "cure". Was hoping to find one here. She is 7 months old now and it is slowing a bit but I definitely cannot put her down ANYWHERE without her peeing just a quarter size puddle. Out of 10 dogs in obedience training class she was the only one who left puddles each week. Up to 3 in one hour! Good luck!

| I would suggest putting a diaper on her if she is marking when taking her places. |

Regardless, first step for your own sanity, BELLY BANDS. After that, you pretty much have to bait him and every time he goes to lift his leg correct him with a firm no. Not yelling, but a firm no. If that doesn't phase him, then add a clap to snap him out of his state of mind, or pick him up. If you pick him up immediately take him outside, remove the belly band and tell him to "potty" there. To them, marking isn't peeing, but you have to, as Cesar Millan would say "claim the space." The space (home) is yours and you don't want that in your home. Also, every human has to be on the same page. If everyone does the exact same thing when they catch him in the act, he'll get the message quicker. The belly bands are only to protect your furniture, drapes, floors, etc. The training is what really makes the difference.

| I am wondering do they ever stop going in the house, and always on the best carpets and rugs. Maxine is going to be 13 in 2 weeks, and yes, we consider her housebroken, but she will have the occasional accident...sometimes it is our fault as we miss her signal. She can fly across country in a plane, ride across country in a car, go all night with no accident, but during the day, she will let er rip! I guess part is because they have little bladders. I do not know, but got to love them regardless. It also happens more when my wife is gone for some reason...sort of like she wants to get me in trouble. |

| today we went back to petco. i was in there to redeem the gift card i won in the raffle , but i also wanted to use it as a training opportunity since so many dogs go in there and there are smells everywhere. this time was very different. i was watching her like a hawk and when i wanted to stop somewhere, i wouldn't allow her to roam around, i would have her sit right next to me. she was very compliant. she did sniff around and go to mark on several occasions. i said "aaaaahhhh"!! it startled her and she immediately stopped. at least once, she just sat down instead (we've been working on the sit command, which she would do, but i would have to repeat it too many times). she did seem to get after a while that i didn't want her to do it. so, progress, i guess.... |

| I thought Uni was completely house broken since she was 5 months and she is now 3 1/2 until she peed in Missy bed last week. Ugh. Sorry Missy!

| Probably making herself at home. LOL! JK, I'm not sure why. It was a mark, not urinating, it was small. If she is in a new place, she will usually go potty in the human bathrooms, bc thats where she was trained to go pee indoors, whether or not there is a pad down. That's what also makes me think it was a marking. But why, I'm not sure why. Sorry I couldn't help!
