| anyone have a yorkie that was never fully housebroken their whole life? I've just about given up on my little Kingston. Just when I think he's potty trained, he reverts back to peeing and pooping inside the house. I've tried crating him, but he still goes indoors. When I take him out for walks he goes outside, then when we get back home, an hour later, he goes again. I trained him the exact same way I trained my older yorkie, Kenji. Kenji is completely 100% house trained. He has no accidents whatsoever. But Kingston just doesn't seem to get it. I was just wondering if anyone out there has or had a yorkie that was never fully house trained.

Thor's Human Donating Member | I know it's happened. Someone here once said that they've never seen a yorkie that was truly, 100.00% trained. Thor is where I think most yorkies end up, which is that he's very reliable in my home and at my office, but if he is in a new environment, or something stressful happens (like, someone moves a piece of furniture), all bets are off. I did not think I would get Thor trained at one point. The key was **vigilence**. Do not give them the opportunity to fail. They must be in the crate, or you must have both eyeballs on them. It was seriously one of the most difficult things I've done in my life, just because it required such undivided attention. I'm sure there are a few dogs that are truly untrainable, but I think a lot of yorkies are just tough, and their owners are not able give the task the focus and time it needs. |

| Could it be a boy thing? Like he is the dominate one and is marking? What about using belly bands? If you have already taken him out and he's gone and then you are home use a belly band until you get home again. The only other suggestion I would have is what about getting one of those little fire hydrants and a pee pad (they use those at doggy day care places) and then at least he would have a place to go inside. One another note....now that the time has changed we are back to Dog Park Wednesdays in Playa in the evenings....come join us!!

He's a little over a year old now, and I've let him have full run of the house for a few months now. I've been letting him get away with potty accidents, but now I'm even more determined to get him trained. The main motivation is the smell his urine leaves behind. I don't want my place smelling like pee. I'm going to start crating him again. I just hope it's not too late for him since he is now over a year old. I can't see myself crating him for the rest of his life. How about I fly you to Los Angeles and you can potty train him for me? LOL...just kidding! Quote:
I don't think it's a marking issue because he will only go on things shaped like squares. I'm sure he does this because he was used to being pad trained. I want to get away from pee pads because they tend to stink up my place. Plus it's unattractive when I have guests come over. Good call on the belly bands though. I think I will have to make him use that. In fact, I'm going to start shopping online for some tonight. As for the dog park in Playa, we will for sure have to join you and Teddi soon. Hopefully we can make it out tonight. If not this week, then perhaps next week.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | If he uses pads stay with them ! My 2 are way older and very trained but there's always days when they just gotta go I use a washable large pad with a disposable one on top. My oldest is very very good about getting up in the night and using it while my youngest and smaller one will hold it till we get up (if one has an accident though it's usually her and usually only during storms) I'd rather be able to throw something away than worry about having my place smell. Everyone who's been here always tells me how nice my place always smells - can't even tell I have dogs - (course they SEE them) but at least I know the carpet is clear - plus I keep reed diffusers in each room I've been to peoples homes that reek and granted some can't help it but I sure don't want that problem...once it starts it's very hard to control cause the scent is already there and they think it's ok to do again |

| I had a foster girl that I could not house train at all. She was the first one in 50 years that I could not train. She was turned over to the rescue over this very issue. She was adopted by a couple who knew she wasn't house trained and they did not have any luck either. She would have been the one that Cesar would have to throw in the towel.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Maybe he got full run of the house too quickly. If he has an accident, you have to restrict him back to a smaller area. And you definitely can't get let him get away with it, because if your house smells like pee, it's like hanging up a sign saying, "Please toilet here". Are you using an enzyme cleaner? If he goes on square-shaped things, it sounds like he is trainable - he's just trained to the wrong thing! Thor is pad trained, but I think it's easier to train to go outdoors exclusively. Do you have a firm plan in place? Bell, scratching at the door, taking him out every two hours, etc? For about two months, I used moving boxes to "gate" certain areas of my apartment off. I literally spent close to a month almost entirely in my living room, because that was the only room Thor was allowed in. I gradually increased his area to my entire apartment, but if he had an accident, I moved the boxes back to shrink the area. It was ugly, but effective. | Yes, Ellie is 8 and is not fully trained. A lot of times I probably miss her asking to go out. She has to wear a diaper because of it... And crate training would be nice, except that she has no problem going all over herself. I used to leash her to me for days at a time so that I'd catch when she had to go. Well, that is obv. not possible for months at a time, so it didn't last long. She is more motivated to get it right when treats are involved.

| I have one that is 6 yrs and is only clean when we are home to let him out. When we go out, even for 1/2 hr, he'll manage to mess the house. Tried everything with no success. So when we go out, belly bands are a must.
