| Do some just NOT crate train? Is it possible that some puppies never take to crate training? My hubby put our puppy (5 mo. old) in the crate today to leave for an appointment. When I got home, 20 min later, she was soaked, and thirsty and favoring a back leg! It had to be from salivation because there is no water in there and she does not smell like urine. My daughter said the same thing happened the other day when she was left in her crate for a short time. This is a new developement in her attempt to fight the crate. Will an ex pen make any difference for one with severe seperation anxiety like this? Please!!! Any advice?

| We tried to crate train Bella Mia but it never worked. She would be so terribly upset to be in the crate for any time frame. It got to the point we felt it was doing her harm to be in the crate. We did find the xpen to be sooooo much better. She now has free roam of the house and there are no issues at all with her. Sherman Tank was crate and xpen trained as a little puppy and now he just uses the xpen when we are away. He doesmt mind it at all. He will sometimes go in the xpen just to take his own time out. We hope to someday allow him free roam of the house also but he is still a puppy 7 months old and gets himself into trouble (like chewing anything made of wood like the coffee table ).

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I got Pixie at 13 months and she screamed when she was crated. Since she was older, yet not potty trained, I left her in my puppy proof bedroom with my other 2 dogs when I was gone. I would try the expen as she may not feel so enclosed and settle down better.

| Crate training didn't really work out so well with us either. He was fine in it when we left him alone (never came back to poop, pee, or anything that seemed he had been stressed) but when we were home... he was having NONE of being in that crate and being away from us. Even the ex-pen didn't work out too long for us. He's such a "pack oriented" dog I guess you could say and just really didn't like being away from his family when he could clearly see us in the next room. I guess we got lucky that he's never been really bad so he's had free roam since 5 months old (but when he was younger, it was constant supervision to make sure no potty accidents). Crate just didn't work for us. We did it for about a month.

| I have never in my life crate trained, but I have very successfully housebroken each one and it didn't take long, either.

Mental picture may help...Picture a little 5 mo. 5 pound dog....If a cabinet door is open, she is in it. If the dish washer door is down, she is on it. If the dryer door is open, she is in it. If a chair is left out from the table, she is on the table. If the door to the trash can is open, she is in the trash. She is on the coffee table. She gets on the sofa to get on the end table. She gets on ledge of my bath tub to jump up onto the counter, she loves Q-tips. If I am folding a basket of clothes, she is in the basket digging to the bottom! She bites leaves off my plants. I am pretty sure she can get out of an ex pen, and I am pretty sure she is a cat in a dog suit. One of the most challenging I have ever had!! I should add, however, that I love her stubborn personality. I just want her to be safe.

| Bailey never took to the crate and we never pushed it. We used it during potty training - but that's all. Now she has free roam of the house -but when she was younger, she was put in an expen when we were at work.

| Mia and our new addition, Dany don't mind the crate. Addie was and still is another story. From the time we brought her home as a three month old, she has refused to be crated. She would cry, yelp, bark, and jump hitting her head on the crate. After about five seconds of this, I couldn't stand it any longer. I was worried she would hurt herself. I bought an expen and arranged it and the crate in a square so she had room to roam (littered with piddle pads) and could go in the crate with the door open when she wanted to sleep. Of course, she refused to be in this too if we were home. As far as jumping/climbing out (we found out this week that Dany can and will do that if Addie and Mia aren't with her), some pens have covers that you can put over the put together expen. I don't have a cover, so I don't know how well they work. Probably want to make sure the little one can't get it's head under it and possible choke. |

| Thank you very much for all the replies. Today, for the first time she was needing to be left for an extended period of 3 hours. My hubby assured me she would be fine left out, and she was. Nothing destroyed, no piddle messes (but she's been a breeze to house break so that was not my concern), and she seemed much more content and not stressed when I returned. She just wants to be where Moka is, so I guess this is our new routine.

| I have never been able to make mine stay in a crate. I limit their space and use pee pads. I think if you totally dedicate a week to nothing but training you might be ok. But I'm not good fat that either. |

I didn't crate train - heck - couldn't even get Cheri in a playpen for her first night home - she screamed her tiny fool head off and I caved...but I was in the position to be right there most of the time when she was a puppy - when we'd go anywhere they had a secure gate and stayed in the kitchen....she didn't like that either but it worked | |

| Do you think it's more separation anxiety or the crate itself? Does she get like that when you leave or only if she's in the crate? If it's only when she's in the crate I'd def try an ex-pen. Good luck! |

Well, today I have a totally different perspective of what I am dealing with. I left her out with my 3 year old, Moka. I restricted their space to a couple of rooms but she did just fine this way. This puppy came to us straight from the breeder and her littermates and bonded with my Moka immediately. They love to play and get along great, and I really think now it is Moka she doesn't want to be away from, not us. Moka is very mellow, and calm, and when we are not home she sleeps and I think Mylee will follow her lead in that way, so I really think now leaving her out is going to work best for her, for now. I was really surprised today the difference in leaving her out made. I am a big fan of crate training, but this one obviously is not going to adjust to it, and I am ok with that as long as she is safe otherwise. Thanks for all the input. It has been great help.
