| Has anyone trained to potty in and out? Our puppy is 9 weeks old and he is doing very well at going out to go potty. I am wondering about training him to go both out and inside on a potty pad. I know he is probably too young to introduce going on a potty pad yet, but I am wondering when I should, and if I should. Have any of you done both, and was it successful? I would like the convenience, but not at the cost of him thinking he can just pee and poop all over my house. |

| I don't know if it makes a difference but we had ours trained on a pad first and then outside. We've had a couple of issues lately for some reason but for the most part, they use their pads inside. We keep them on pads as we boat sometimes it is not convenient to take them to shore.

| My Yorkie has always gone inside on a pad Since getting my 16 mo. old Murphy when he was 12 weeks old, he has always been trained for the piddle pad. I live in NW Pennsylvania and would never consider letting him out to do his business, especially in the winter. Aside from the cold, he'd get ice balls all tangled up in his hair, I know that because my sister had one that that happened to. He's pretty much trained to go on the pad...but he still has his moments when he pees beside the pad or goes #2 on the floor beside the pad. We just can't find a reason why he pees on our top bed spread while we're at work during the day. Last edited by dcypher; 09-23-2009 at 10:00 AM. |

this makes sense because not only will he pee on the pad, but he will pee on rugs as well. pretty much anything that's shaped like a square.

| Just be careful using your garage. There are many dangers to a dog in there. Antifreeze, wires, pesticides, etc. I really don't know if it will make a difference. I'm currently training my 3.5-month old Sydney to use a pad. I have four on the bare floor currently, down from six. I did catch her going #2 on the carpet, but as soon as I said no, she ran for the wee wee pads and finished her business. The winters are harsh here, too, and training her to go inside is important. When the weather is nice, we do go outside, but I make sure she's gone first on the pad. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Sonya |

| When I fist got our three, they immediately went into the expen attached to the front of a wire crate. I covered the crate for warmth and make it den-like. I put a wee-wee pad at the opposite end of the water dish. Then put in a couple chews and toys. I then just kept taking them outside every hour for a couple of months, then every 3 hours and so on. The pad was there in case they couldn't hold themselves and when I had to go somewhere that I couldn't take them, and of course for them during the night. They were never allowed to walk around in the house until they were completely house trained. In the evening when we would retire to the sofa, they would then be allowed to sit with us, but never play. We trained them that sitting on the sofa was quiet cuddle time. Zada will be 5 in Dec. Azrael will be 5 in Jan. and Razael just turned 2 the 5th, and they still get the pads down at night or if left home when we can't take them. We don't sleep with them at all. They sleep in two beds in the dining room kitchen are with the doors to the living room and entry way shut. They have their water, toys, chews and beds and it works perfectly. We take the pads with us when we travel so that when we go into a motel, we don't have to worry about late night potty breaks or early morning ones. We leave them down during the day if it's raining too. We didn't train them to actually use the pads, but if they went on the pad in front of us we of course said "good Potty". We say the same thing when they go outside.

| Tyler stays in his xpen in the kitchen ANY time we are not home, at night when we go to bed, and whenever I can't fully watch him (like being in the shower or giving my daughter a bath). He has a bed, toys, food and water dish and a pee pad in with him. He uses the pad MOST of the time but still has a few mishaps here and there. During the day (I'm a stay at home mom) he gets to stay with us the whole day so I take him outside and he goes So during the day he's not using his pads unless like I said I have to shower or go somewhere and he has to stay in his xpen! It works well for us so yes, I think that they can be taught to do both. |

| yes, inside and out! When we first got Sophie at 8 weeks old, she was semi-trained to go on the pee pads and outside! We've kept it up because we can't always go "let her out" during the day because of work! During the day when we're not home, she uses her pee pad, and as soon as we're home, she goes outside! Had a few "accidents" lately, but very few! She even rings her bell to alert us that she has to go out! Too cute! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I have two Yorkies that are basically the same age. One is doing great going outside and the other was wee wee pad trained. The one that was wee wee pad trained hates to go outside so I've kept the wee wee pads and try walking her. I personally wouldn't let a dog go inside because it confuses them but I feel like I have to now. If you don't mind having a dog eliminating in your house and buying wee wee pads forever go for it! I would stay away from it especially if your little one is doing good going outside but the choice is yours of course Good luck with your training!

| We trained genghis on a pad when he was really little, and he was really good at always trying to make it on the pad though just like human boys aim is initially an issue. I can't tell you how many times it landed half on half off. This quickly made up our minds to train him to go outside. That took a long time as he would only go on or near a pee pad. Even on long car rides we would put him on grass and he would just stand there clearly full of pee needing to go looking for a pee pad. We finally just started putting pee pads outside and he went imediately. DH thought this was hilarious cause we were standing in the cold for about 20 mins waiting for pee pee just staring and giving the pee pee command, and nothing. As soon as the pad came out he peed a puddle the same size as himself right in the middle of the pad. Then the looked really happy. Anyway we used pee pads outside for a few weeks which worked pretty well though there were many accidents where his pee pad was before, and there was the relapse when he got neutered, but now that he's almost one, I think he's got it down, and so have we he uses a doggie door and gets treats when we see or know that he's peed/pooped outside. He'll do anything for treats. |

I also use the washable pads. I love them. They are the most economical and they dont fill the landfills. I would have it no other way. I never have to hurry home, I dont have to go out in the weather, I dont have to get up in the morning to let them out. It is so very very convenient. Mine used to use rugs and other similar things when they were younger, but now they almost never do that. They are both two years old now and they know where there puppy pads are and they are always in the same place so they know now that those are the puppy pads and not the rugs throughout the house. LOL I hope this helps some of you with your decisions about pad or outside training. | |
