Just be careful using your garage. There are many dangers to a dog in there. Antifreeze, wires, pesticides, etc.

I really don't know if it will make a difference. I'm currently training my 3.5-month old Sydney to use a pad. I have four on the bare floor currently, down from six. I did catch her going #2 on the carpet, but as soon as I said no, she ran for the wee wee pads and finished her business. The winters are harsh here, too, and training her to go inside is important. When the weather is nice, we do go outside, but I make sure she's gone first on the pad.
