| Coooold out! Need potty advice! Hi All! It's getting mighty cold out, and my little guy is an excellent goer outsider, but i worry as its getting reeeeely cold out, and my elderly mom is often with him during the day... would it be okay to put a pee pad in the garage? am i asking for trouble? would this screw up his going outside? how could i "teach" him to use the pad in the garage? This way my mom could just let him in the garage, wait at the open door for him and neither of them would get overly cold! Suggestions, please! Thanks

| I use pee pads for my dogs and they go outside. It's the best of both worlds. They refuse to go when it's wet or cold outside.

| I dunno - my Nikko is outside trained only, and whenever I think that it might be cool to also get him trained for pee pads, I just remember back to the nightmare that potty training was. I'm too chicken to try to switch things up at this point. However, I know that there are some members here who do pull it off successfully! This may be crazy, but if you're set on trying it, it might help to pull up a little peed-on grass or gravel from outside and put it on the potty pad? That way the smells are the same? Or maybe getting one of those neato pads of grass with the contraption underneath that they sell specifically for dogs to pee indoors? Or I don't know - that may be unnecessary. Good luck, anyways. :-) |

I tend to agree that if your little guy is so good at going outside it could possibly cause problems. Some people do it though and it works out.I would rethink all the ways of him going outside if possible. Is there another door he could go outside to a small confined area so your grandma could just stand inside and watch? or something like that. They dont need a huge space to go potty. I would not worry about the dog getting overly cold. Jackson actually loves the cold and snow but he just does his business faster and comes in quicker. Best of luck anyway | |

| I have this same dilema, I bought the potty patch at petco a couple weeks ago, its still here in the box , I just wanted to have it incase we have a horrible snow storm , which we do have on occasion. So far Laci loves the snow and will still go out when its cold but I am just not sure what to do WHEN we have a really bad northeaster snow storm where we have winds and you can barely see outside? So the potty patch is here with the reciept in the box

| BEST IDEA EVER! -------------------------> PUPPY CLOTHS! ....sweat shirts, hoodies, jakets, exc...! oops I thought you were talking about an elderly dog... I like the idea of a doggy door... Is that a possibility if you have a yard?

YT Addict | I am also very worried about the cold. My little girl is 3 pounds and she shakes if outside too long. Oh, I have bought jackets and sweaters but they dont seem to cover much. everything seems to go mid chest *sigh* So I bought some puppy pads and tried putting one outside on "her spot". She hates it! I tried putting it inside on one of those cold rainy days. She wouldnt take one step on it. hates hates hates pee pads. Im now considering the grass patch thing. in the mean time I tried to take up knitting so she could finally have soemthing that went all the way to her butt. I hate knitting. :P I found this article the other day on how to turn an old ugly sweater into a lovely dog sweater.... and i actually did it! it looks amazing. I was just about to post it in another thread but this is what i did.... I cut off the sleave of a sweater (mind you my girl is only 3 pounds), the cuff acts as a turtle neck. I cut off the other cuff and cut that in half. then hand sewed them into tubes, found where her little leggs would be, cut tiny holes and attached the little tubes I made from the cuff. After cleaning up the bottom it looks fantastic. I'll have to post a picture. I recently bought a bunch of felt and plan to play with that soon. Ill post a picture or pattern if I can figure that out. My plan is to make a little jacket that has a hoop I can clip her leash on. It is such a pain to put on her harness, then sweater, then clip her leash on when she wants to go out. If my jacket idea works it will be all in one, quick and simple. gosh, I have totally gone over the deep end as a yorkie mum, huh? :P

| I, too, was worried about the cold and snowy days of Michigan. Here's what is working for us...Winston would not use the potty patch, so I decided to get a piece of sod to put in my garage with a little fence around it (so he wouldn't escape) to see if he would potty in it. I added some wood chips and a rock that he peed on so he would know what I wanted him to do. He is pretty stubborn, but I had a chair and a magazine, and I just waited him out. He finally peed. Now getting him to poop is a little harder...but he has pooped in it a couple of times. I just have to be patient and wait. I also put a little heater in the garage so neither one of us gets too cold. Right now Winston is in the hospital after surgery for chiari malformation. He is doing well and hope to get him home in a couple of days. Hope this helps. |

I think after I took photos with santa, made her the "old sweater" sweater and am considering steps *sigh* so she can climb in and out of my bed safely (the bed she dosnt sleep in BTW... she sleeps in her crate) I guess thats when I had that "wow, im nuts over my dog" moment. haha! I think I might start an Atrs and Crafts blog here.

YT Addict | We get cold winters here in Alberta. A couple days ago it was about -35c. Lexi has always gone outside, even in -35c weather. She really doesn't seem to mind it. She'll do her business and a couple laps around the dog run, then she'll rush inside. Does your mom have to go outside with him? Is your yard fenced? If she does have to go outside then I would attempt switching to a pee pad for the winter. However if your mom can just let him into the yard and wait - then I'd see how he does in the cold weather.

| I highly recommend the porch potty. You can spend the money (about $250) and get the frame and grass patch or just spend $45-$50 for the grass patch alone. Winston has been using it since I first brought him home. It is a similar texture to real grass so there is no confusion. He didn't really get the pee pee pads so I skipped those and went striaght for the grass. I took a few bricks and placed a border around it and he goes in it every time! I use it b/c I live in an apartment and sometimes getting outside isn't always the quickest option. All you have to do is pour a couple buckets of hot water on it to clean it every couple days. This might be the perfect solution for your mom and the garage. Good luck! |
