| Just wondering, Who peepad trained without using a crate? I'm curious to know who had had success pee pad training without using the crate method? So far I hate to keep Bailey in a closed crate, right now his crate serves as is bed in his Xpen...I took the door off of it. He goes to his pee pad quite often, but he also has used the floor to his pen several times too. So, I wondering if crate training is necessary. Thanks in advance!!

| My step-father thinks putting him in the crate is inhumane and likens it to when people just stick there pets in cages all day. So we go old school. The only time he's been in the crate is when we sit down to eat and we don't want him begging. So his crate is in the family room while we're in the kitchen. His bedroom is our laundry room. Its about 5'x7'. His space to walk around in is about 3'x 3.5'. He did really well with the pee pad. We've had him close to 3 months now and he doesn't even go in his room anymore. At first when we were peepad training he wanted to go in front of his doggy gate, so we put the pad there. Once he got used to using it, we moved it to under the laundry sink and he went in there when he had to go.

| I couldn't stand putting Allie in a small crate. We pee pad trained witout one. When I went to work, we put a baby gate in front of the door of the bathroom. That's where we kept her pad. She couldn't make too big of a mess that way. Just constantly going in there with her and picing her up when we found her in the act has made it so that she now pees on the pad every time. Poop is another story. We are still workin on that. It IS possible.... we just haven't gotten 100% success with that one yet... But this morning it happened! So hope is on the horizon.

| We are potty-training without a crate. He's about 4 months and "gets it" most of the time unless he gets too busy to think about it or excited. But we're just going to continue with the consistency and he'll get there 100%. We didn't want to confine to a crate . . . we usually only use the crate for going to the vet, groomers, etc. He does use a crate but the door is off most of the time at home within a 3 x 3 pen. |

| I trained all my puppies using open play pens. They are made of wood and have no top and a plastic tray on the bottom. I put a potty pad or two inside and every time the puppy wakes up, before bed, after playing for a little while I put them in and once they go I say good boy and let them out. It doesn't take long before they figure out where they need to go. Before you know it they'll be using them on their own. When their very little like Bailey it is normal for them to have accidents thats just part of having a new puppy but when they do pick him up and put him on the potty pad. I also use these pens when I have to leave them or can't watch them for whatever reason. When you use this method it comes in handy when you need them to go to the bathroom like before you take them out or in my case need a urine sample, etc. Hope this helps. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Never owned a crate. Both my dogs sleep in bed with us and if they have to go during the night, they wake me up and I take them outside. During the day, when they were babies, we would take them out about every hour. They now both know the command "pee-pee now" and will go on command. #2 took awhile until we recognized the signs and their schedule. Usually within half an hour of eating. In the early morning I now know my little one who is just a year has to do #1 and #2. He will go outside, pee and come right back to the door. If I say, no, go back and go potty, he gets it and goes. Takes awhile, just be consistent. |

| I have too. I have never crated mine. Just too weak-willed I guess. I know it is good for them and see how so many love their crates, but I just could never listen to them cry. I actually dual train them to pee outside when I take them and on the pads whenever they are alone or have not learned to "tell me" they need to go. My older ones will tell me when they need to go outside. First I start them on the pads and then start taking them outside as they get a little older. My littlest puppy is only 15 weeks old so he only goes on the pad. I actually just started taking him out to the grass when the other dogs are doing their business. He does go outside, but he still mostly goes on the pads. He is doing really well. The only accidents he has had in over a week were just barely missing his pee pad and using a small rug for a pad. I may have to move that rug!

| Brady wasn't crate trained. He just kind of followed suit. When Zoe & Pep went out, he did too.

| Thanks for the replys! I'm glad it is possible without having to crate him! Bailey loves taking naps inside his crate, but he also likes coming out when he feels like it

| It is nice to hear so many that don't crate them for hours on end! I guess I'm a little old school too. Crating all day while at work, and crating all night too.. seems a little harsh.. IMO I think confining them to rooms, or xpens works well! |

| I never crate train.. what I do is have an xpen for nights.. that way I know they are safe.. I put a small crate in the xpen that is a come and go as they like.. a space for food water and always toys and a pp pad.. In the day time I give them for example my kitchen dining room with the back door going out to the yard.. a doggie door.. I never stress.. they get it eventually and some are just quicker learners then some..even gracie had her pp in the hall at night until after she was into her second year.. but no punishment.. she got it.. I knew she would.. My first three yorkies and dogs as an adult were resuces.. so I learned from the start.. patience is a virtue... and that in time they do get it.. Hope that helps... I do however make a big fuss when they use the pp pad or go outside.. I clap my hands like an idiot and say good girl or good boy.. and I make my voice so happy and excited.. I have mariska who is 6 months old.. used nothing but a pp pad and came back to Canada and with the doggie door off the kitchen.. we are also in the rv in the driveway due to renovations.. we made a gated area to the deck which leads to the yard.. and she is doing very well.. and we have been home a week.. anne |

| I bought a crate but never used it, it didnt look humane to me Laci came home at 12 weeks and was pretty much already pee pad trained.. so I never used the crate and still dont, I had very few accidents and later decided to potty train for outside.. she is 99 percent potty trained outside, honestly I thought potty training was a breeze, but I am home all day and set my alarm for 2,4 and 6 am... cherrios did the trick for me and boiled chicken...
