| can't train bcuz HE HIDES!! I dont know if anyone else has this problem but, I didnt have time to potty train my yorky when he was younger, because I go to med school and didn't have the time. The thing is hes 2 yrs old now, and I bought the wee pads, and I was thinking of doing the usual scream at him when i see it and redirect him to the pad. the issue is i started thinking and I can't remember th elast time I actually CAUGHT him doing his business...it seems that he has a bit of a shy issue and slips off unnoticed into vacant rooms or corners of my loft to poop, so how on EARTH am I suppose to train him now????? I can't keep him locked up like he was a puppy, i feel it would be unfair. At least he knows never to do it on the bed where he sleeps...any hope? |

| I don't have much advice for you. All I can say is that it's too bad you didn't have time when you first got your yorkie because that is when he was learning. I wish you the best and I hope someone can give you some suggestions! |

| If he is scared of you, it is probably from your screaming. Try to not scream or move too quickly if he is a little shy/timid towards you. Build some trust in your relationship with him and he'll trust you more.

| I wouldn't really scream, per say. He doesn't really know what you're screaming about. Especially if you haven't taken the time to let him know where is the right place to go potty and where is the wrong place. He's hiding because of your scream. You need to portray calm, assertive energy and calmly but sternly say "NO!" and put him in the right place. And in order to get a 2 year old who is in bad habits trained... you're going to HAVE to either crate train or get an x-pen to get him pottying in the right place. Make it so that he CAN'T go potty in the corners. Block him off from all corners. Keep him in an open room where you can constantly see him. Put him on a strict schedule, letting him outside or on the pad every hour. Do NOT give free roam to him if you cannot keep your eyes on him 24/7. He WILL continue going. He obviously just doesn't know right from wrong yet and you will have to work hard to teach him. It won't happen instantly. Most yorkies can take 6 months-1 year to potty train as puppies and I think older dogs are more difficult because they've already started the bad habits.

Also, I found out we weren't taking him out often enough. It's easier to let a dog out when you have a back yard, but for your loft don't forget to take him out a minimum of every 3 hours. You don't want your dog in pain. Listen to the tips these people give you - they work. | |

| Gentle Steps I started outdoor training Mr. Darcy until we moved to our new home. It's a tiny writers studio with no suitable/safe place for Mr. Darcy to go out. I got the potty mat and disposable pads, and he is now a totally indoor dog. What goes in comes out, usually within 20 minutes. After he'd eat/drink I'd watch closly for sniffing and circling. Then I'd start praising and telling him to be a good boy and use his pad. Lucky for me, he'd announce the finished deed by woof woofing and kicking his hind legs like outside dogs marking "their" area do. I'd clap and praise and give him a treat. Every little dribble got my positive response. If he started lifting his leg I'd say NO and remind him to be a good boy. Our pups want to please and running/hiding is often due to fear of scolding. If you must watch closly ater meals and crate at night, this may help. Praise and tons of extra attention makes a difference. I expect my upstairs flat mate thinks I'm a real nut case as Mr. Darcy and I still do the "celebration cheers when he goes!!!!!! Hope this helps. Mr. Darcy and mum |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Don't worry, there's hope! I got Thor when he was 2 years old, and not potty trained. You must abolutely restrict his movement, either by putting him into a confined area or by keeping him on a leash with you at all times. You don't have to do this forever, just until he learns to use the pads. Once he starts using the pads, gradually increase his area until he has full run of your place again. Praise, treats, and a regular schedule will help tremendously too.

| Quick is right .... Designate an area that he can go in doesn't matter if it's outside or in a corner of the laundry room but that is the only place he can eliminate in Now you have to close off as much of the rest of the house for now as possible Keep him in only the areas where he needs to be for now and watch him praise him when he goes in the right place and watch him when he's in places were you Don't want him to go when you catch him going where you don't want him to it's AH! can transport him where he should be after the fact is too late ... he'll have no idea what you are talking about any reaction he'll have will be from his tone of voise and body language nothing else

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | You will have to kennel him or put him in an exercise pen on a easy clean floor where he can't sneak off. Take him out at regular intervals and reward him like crazy when he goes.

| Ok, some may think this is going a bit too far but not only did we restrict his movements, we wiped his bits after with a warm wet paper towel while naming the parts... good oop oop, good pee pee. Now he goes on command while proudly thinking he just given us a gift. |

| thank you all! I guess there really wont be any way of doing it without restricting him. I did train him to do quite a few tricks since he was young, so he's use to the reward system, so i'll most likely try that. thank you guys for the advice! |

Thor's Human Donating Member | You're welcome! Please feel free to stop by the 'YT Potty Log' thread, where those of use still in the midst of training are sweating it out. We'd love to get an update.
