Default Gentle Steps

I started outdoor training Mr. Darcy until we moved to our new home. It's a tiny writers studio with no suitable/safe place for Mr. Darcy to go out. I got the potty mat and disposable pads, and he is now a totally indoor dog.
What goes in comes out, usually within 20 minutes. After he'd eat/drink I'd watch closly for sniffing and circling. Then I'd start praising and telling him to be a good boy and use his pad. Lucky for me, he'd announce the finished deed by woof woofing and kicking his hind legs like outside dogs marking "their" area do. I'd clap and praise and give him a treat. Every little dribble got my positive response. If he started lifting his leg I'd say NO and remind him to be a good boy.
Our pups want to please and running/hiding is often due to fear of scolding. If you must watch closly ater meals and crate at night, this may help. Praise and tons of extra attention makes a difference. I expect my upstairs flat mate thinks I'm a real nut case as Mr. Darcy and I still do the "celebration cheers when he goes!!!!!!
Hope this helps.
Mr. Darcy and mum
