| ![]() Hello. I am a new member, just joined yesterday. I have been reading many posts since I got Maximus, who is 7.5 inches tall and 3.5 pounds now at 6months. You all sound very sweet, sincere and nice. So I decided to join! But here is my big concern since the day I got him on 11/23/04. He was then 3.5 months old. He was kind of good about going on the pad but soon as he came to my house (which has up and down stairs) he lost it. It was my big mistake to give him the access to the house in the beginning. Then I confined his space to my room only. He became ok with it, half the times going on the pad. Then he became pretty good b/c after all failed, I tried a "treat method" as a last resort and it worked alright. So I took him out of the room when I am watching him. Now he is pretty good about not pottying outside my room b/c I take him to potty in my room every 4 hours. But then some days he will be bad about it. Twice he pottyed on bathroom floor when I go to bathroom, whihc is right next to my room. I think he thinks that since I go there, it's ok to do it there or something. And twice last week and yesterday, he would just potty in my room carpet, not on the pad! Yesterday, I went upstairs (I had a bad feeling already) and found his pee on the carpet on the door way, about a foot away from the pad. What to do?? ![]() ![]() |

| ![]() Hi and glad you joined us here in Yorkie Talk. The only suggestions I have for Maximus is maybe to start "crate training" him. Also, he is probably smelling "old" urine spots on the floor(s) and because of doing so is returning to the areas to relieve himself. There have many posts on the "housebreaking" dilema's and sometimes even the older Yorkies who used to be so trustworthy on going potty where they should had to revert back to "basics" on housebreaking. And the "treat" reward for pottying in the right spot is excellent, keep it up. Wish you the best with Maximus and send pics of him when you can, we adore pictures around here. ![]()

| ![]() I'm right there with you on the potty training woes! Hercules is 5 1/2 months and sounds a lot like Maximus (which is a great name!). Some days he does great and other days he's going all over the place. We're training him to go outside though. I've read that yorkies are extremely hard to potty train. It just takes a lot of patience, persistence, and good carpet cleaner! ![]() I'd like to hear if any other yorkie owners with more experience have more light to shed on the topic too. Oh, and welcome to yorkie talk, there are definitely lots of nice and sincere people out there. I love this place and don't know what I'd do without it!! ![]()

| ![]() Thank you for your tips and warm welcome. Yeah, maybe he is smelling some drops from b/f on the carpet around the pad area but I will clean the carpet with carpet cleaner and pray some repellant too (which I usually do anyway after he does in wrong places). Hercules is also a very cute name, I thought about that too. I wanted to name him something strong, big and brave. ha ha. One day, I hope maximus will live up to his name. I can see that people are very nice and sincere here. That's why I joined. I think I am gonna like this place! By the way, I dont know if you guys know this but I remember, one of the lady here suggested to buy pads for human use from Shiled medical supply. It's alot cheaper than wee wee pads. I just got some samples to see how Maximus will like it. I dropped a drop of strong attractant you can buy at petco on it. I wanted to test out how absorbent it is, fast drying it is and how Max will like it. I will see and let you know if you are interested. My only concern is that it's kind of small. ![]() |

| ![]() Yeah, let us know how those medical pads work. I use the pee pads outside because I really want Hercules to be trained to go outside. But we live on the 3rd floor of an apartment, so it's rough running up and down all the time. So we built a box to put on the balcony and were going to put sod in it, so he is used to going on grass and outside. Well this was in November, and sod was a little out of season! So we put a pee pad in the box instead. I might check back at some nurseries soon to see if they have sod now. My boyfriend thought of Hercules' name. I wasn't sure at first but it fits so well and I love it now. The best thing is people's reaction to his name when I take him out!! They always laugh when they see him with such a big name! ![]()

| ![]() Hey everyone....ok, I had the same problem with Dolce. She is also 6 months old now, actually 6 1/2 mths, and at 10 weeks she was fully potty trained. I WAS ECSTATIC!! Well, we got our kitchen remodeled and during that time when there was construction her whole "routine" was disturbed. After it was finished and everything was back to normal, she started peeing and pooping anywhere she liked. It was horrible, frustrating and so disappointing. I was so tired of cleaning up urine on the carpet, the hardwood floor, underneath the couch...anywhere she wanted to go. I never scolded her when I found the pee, except if i caught her "in the act." I decided to start all over again. Everytime she came out of her playpen I put her on the pad and said "go pee pee"...mind u as soon as i put her down she ran away, but it was a consistent thing. I also followed her and watched her when I knew she had to go...and then point to the pad and say "go there." Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didnt. Finally I went to Petco 2 weekends ago and got Nature's Miracle spray (thanks to one of the wonderful people on here that told me about it...i think it was lickthestar ![]() ![]()

| ![]() Luca Dean came home with us when he was 5 months, and we've had him since Jan. 3rd. So, in the 5 weeks we've had him, he's made awesome progress with the potty trainig. He has one accident about every other day or so now. What I did was put a wee pad in my bathroom and took him there and said 'go wee wee" about 12 times a day the first two weeks. This got old fast. I treated him too if he went, and he soon discovered if he went, he got a treat. Soon, he was going in there about once an hour and doing a little bit just to get a treat. The third week (I think) he reversed on us and started peeing wherever for a few days b/c I had slacked off taking him to his wee pad so much. We got the Pee Pee (odor remover, same as Miracle stuff mentioned by Dolce's mom) and he started going to his wee pad again. We tried crating him, but with two other dogs running free, he acted like he was being punished. We gave up on that, and at this point, as long as I cover his accident spots w/ the odor elimntr. and treat him when I see him go on the wee pad, he's about 90% without accidents. It takes so much consistency!!!! But the payoff is worth it. Good luck, and hang in there. |

| ![]() toby is 5 months and pad trained....... im sorry i know most of you people dont approve of this kind of disciplin.... but..... i tried to be nice and just let his accidents slide (unless i actually SAW him going where he wasnt supposed to and then i said no bad dog.... ) well..... i didnt find this approach at all helpful, it seemed to confuse him because he couldnt figure out why it was ok then but not ok now..... so, i changed tactics, when i found an accident on the floor (whether i saw him do it or not) i "puffed" myself up to look more threatening and gave him a little smack on the bottom and told him he was a very bad dog and put him where he was supposed to go...... (the smackign part is what most yorkie owners dont approve of, but before you guys judge or start to lecture, toby actually LIKES to be spanked during play time, and it is never hard . ![]() |

| ![]() Nature's Miracle is the best! I had just bought it and used it but didn't realize until Archie was fully trained about what was happening. He stopped going in the same places because he couldn't smell it anymore! We have huge bottles of Nature's Miracle all over the house but since he's fully potty trained, we don't even need it anymore! |

| ![]() It was you lickthestar!!! I thought I remembered you telling be about Nature's Miracle....you are absolutely right...IT IS THE BEST!!!!!! I think i maybe used a 1/8 of the bottle and I dont even need it anymore because Dolce is so good now about going on the pad, I think about 95% trained...so I still have basically a full bottle. Again thank you for turning me on to it!!! ![]()
