| Retracting leash? Do most of you use standard leashes on your babies' harnesses, or do you use the retractable leashes as well? I like the idea of the retractable leash for having her on a shorter lead if I know she'll be walking in a part of the neighborhood when there are bigger dogs. But I don't want to use anything that will hurt a small dog... Thanks!! S P. S. I definitely don't want to waste anyone's time so am happy to keep searching the forum if there must have been a previous question about this. I could not find via the search engine. (search terms for titles of threads: 'leash types' 'leashes' 'retractable leash')....

| Here are my thoughts on retreating leashes. One they teach a dog to pull as they have to pull the line to get it longer. Two you can not drop it and pull them in close in an emergency. For some reason some dogs get tangled in them and do to the ting pulling it self back in as you get closer to help untangle the dog they get burnt as the leash pulls it over the skin. I prefer a long line which can be made or bought. For big dogs I use a horse training long line and for smaller ones something lighter. It is around 10 to 12 feet long and I keep it gathered up and when I let the dog go sniff I let the leash out and as they move close I bring it in. If I need to get a dog close can pull it in very quick or add it to come my way. Like pulling in a fish on a line. I also teach no pulling or tightening of the long line as well. So if the dog hits the end of the long line and pulls we stop so the leash/long lines stay relaxed as well. JL

| I use a regular leash when walking Pita, but at home in our yard I use the retractable. That was she has a little more freedom to explore at home since we do not have a fence. |

| I, personally, like the retractable leash but understand why others don't. I just wanted to share a cautionary measure if you opt to try it. Patrick and I were about to back out in a parking lot when a man came out of PetSmart after, obviously, buying a new leash and immediately putting it on his dog. He had his attention on his dog, not traffic, when we began to back up! I noticed the leash in his hand and like all dog lovers, looked to see his dog .... I screamed for Patrick to stop!! That idiot had let the leash out full length in that busy parking lot and his dog was directly behind us! He was so embarassed! Us? Almost gave us a heart attack ... we would have never gotten over it had we backed over that poor dog. If you decide to try it ... please do so where there is no traffic and you both can "get the feel" of it before using it. Good luck!

| I use the retractable leash but only in a large area where there are not alot of traffic, people or other dogs around. Other than that, I lock it to to my desired length...that's what I like about it..the fact you can lock it when you need to.....I also wouldn't use it until your dog has gone through some basic training, walking on a regular leash first...don't think I would use it on a young puppy.

| Please don't walk your dog on a retractable. We use retractables in our own yard because we don't have a fence (townhouse) I hate them but there is no better way. We are selling our house and I can't wait to get a fence. Anyway, we walk on 4 foot leashes because I find they drag on the ground less than 6 foot leashes. If you want to teach them not to pull that's the best way to go.

| I have a scary story to share.. First of all , yes i use 2 retractables, but mainly because we dont have a fenced yard and my 2 cant run loose here due to Wildlife, we live in the country... here about a month ago we got to main country road when i saw a Lab running loose (neighbors) i picked Rosi up and was trying to get Apollo when he saw the Lab, he went ballistic, before i could pick him up he jerked so hard he frayed that line in half , and before i could get him , he was nipping at the labs hind feet i about had heartfailure... i thought he was a goner... thank god the Lab just snapped at him and was trying to get away from him, can you picture that ???? Yorkie attacking Lab my knees where shaking a couple of hrs after that... so i was checking into the manufactor and i think they are only guarantied for a yr...so needless to say they where replaced with new ones, and i check them to make shure there is nothing wrong with them... i still cant believe he ripped one in half...i do keep reg. leashes in the Truck for when we are in town...so please be carefull

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I love the retractable leash, but it does take some getting use to. You can lock it at any length you like, and use it as you would a regular leash, and unlock when you know it's a safe area. Even in the unlocked position, my finger rests on the button to lock and retract it, so in the event I have to reel him in, I can do it in a second.

| I have both for Sam but we mostly use the retractable. Sam is leashed train when I have him on the non retractable - meaning tht he will walk with me. I hate to use it tho because its so short and he loves to run! I do not make him walk "properly" on the retractable. I let him run bc he loves it! I do keep it short when we are in a busy parking lot if I am not carrying him. But other times, I let him go the full 16ft bc again, he loves to run and he loves me running behind him. People may not agree but thats how we do it bc it works for us.

| We used a regular type of leash during training class but prefer the retractable because they both wander from side to side. Fortunately we live in a very small community and it doesn't matter. We've been fortunate that we have been able to train Hot Rod to not go any further than what the leash will. He'll be running along and knows just how far he can go. Maggie is getting better with it and is learning the limit. We also make them come to us and sit down if a car is coming. I am really quick with that button on the leash and even quicker if I should have to grab the line and pull them back in. It is easier when walking the both of them to untangle the lines when they crossover than if I had regular leashes to deal with the extra length.

| I use a retractable leash. Though it is just about always in the locked position so he can't go far at all. |
