We used a regular type of leash during training class but prefer the retractable because they both wander from side to side. Fortunately we live in a very small community and it doesn't matter. We've been fortunate that we have been able to train Hot Rod to not go any further than what the leash will. He'll be running along and knows just how far he can go. Maggie is getting better with it and is learning the limit.

We also make them come to us and sit down if a car is coming. I am really quick with that button on the leash and even quicker if I should have to grab the line and pull them back in.

It is easier when walking the both of them to untangle the lines when they crossover than if I had regular leashes to deal with the extra length.
