Here are my thoughts on retreating leashes.
One they teach a dog to pull as they have to pull the line to get it longer.
Two you can not drop it and pull them in close in an emergency.
For some reason some dogs get tangled in them and do to the ting pulling it self back in as you get closer to help untangle the dog they get burnt as the leash pulls it over the skin.

I prefer a long line which can be made or bought.
For big dogs I use a horse training long line and for smaller ones something lighter. It is around 10 to 12 feet long and I keep it gathered up and when I let the dog go sniff I let the leash out and as they move close I bring it in.

If I need to get a dog close can pull it in very quick or add it to come my way. Like pulling in a fish on a line.
I also teach no pulling or tightening of the long line as well. So if the dog hits the end of the long line and pulls we stop so the leash/long lines stay relaxed as well.
