I, personally, like the retractable leash but understand why others don't. I just wanted to share a cautionary measure if you opt to try it. Patrick and I were about to back out in a parking lot when a man came out of PetSmart after, obviously, buying a new leash and immediately putting it on his dog. He had his attention on his dog, not traffic, when we began to back up! I noticed the leash in his hand and like all dog lovers, looked to see his dog .... I screamed for Patrick to stop!! That idiot had let the leash out full length in that busy parking lot and his dog was directly behind us! He was so embarassed! Us? Almost gave us a heart attack ... we would have never gotten over it had we backed over that poor dog. If you decide to try it ... please do so where there is no traffic and you both can "get the feel" of it before using it. Good luck!
