| Need suggestions on housetraining my new pup! I bought a 4 month old male yorkie last week from a breeder. So far he has been a great puppy, except for the fact that he has been a pain in the butt to potty train. He will only go number two INSIDE on the carpet. I can take him outside and he will pee, but he will come right back in and start pooping 5 minutes later. He pees in the floor, as well but he will also pee outside. I don't understand why he won't poop outside. I asked my vet about this and they said to use puppy pads, so I bought some the other day and he has only peed on them twice. I have also been using the method where you clean up the accident and take it outside and praise them, but it doesn't seem to be working. I am getting rather frustrated, as I hate to keep him confined to a crate, but I also cannot afford to have the carpet in my apartment ruined, because I have not paid the pet fee since it is $600. Any suggestions would be helpful! |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | First off...Welcome to YT!!! Now as for training...it is a long process that takes lots of constant attention and patience!! I would say that if you are not using treats currently I would start, this really seems to reenforce the training...everytime he misses the pad ignore him and put him on the pads that he is suppose to use...everytime he starts to sniff around pick him up and take him outside or onto a pee pad and tell him to "go pee pee" that way he know what is expected of him....this is the method we used and when they did it right it was lots of praise and rewards and before long they got on...one other thing would to make sure you are cleaning the spots good because if he can still smell the pee he will think it is okay to go there!!! Good luck I hope that helps a little...

| A week? Don't lose patience. They are babies. Remember with each accident how long it takes a human baby to be potty trained. |

| Need suggestions on housetraining my new pup! Thanks so much for your replies. I have tried the treat thing and he will not eat them after he goes potty for some odd reason. Is there any reason for that? I also clean up his messes with Oxi Clean, and he never goes in the same spot twice, so I hope I am doing the right thing as far as that goes. I am just so new to all of this and I have never had an indoor dog. I have only had cats inside and cats are a huge difference from dogs. |

| Patience is the name of the game. Believe me he will learn, sooner or later!

| Welcome to YT. Looking forward to see pics and hear stories of your little one. Regarding potty training your little one. His being only at your home 1 week, and that is not enough time to train a pup 100%. You need to be consitent and patient. If you see him smeling around like he is going to go take him out and praise him when he goes. You should keep him in a small area until he is more consistent, what I mean to say is not to let him have full rain of your home. You can use bellybands, that will prevent for his pee to be everywhere. Good luck, and try to be a bit patient. I know is hard but it takes time to train our babies. |

| Potty training Lexy is now 15 weeks old and I got her when she was 8 weeks old. She is now 99% potty trained. I can say it's alot of work but very rewarding if you are constant in doing it. I work everyday and she is in a crate at least 7 hours. When I first got her she would go in her crate but only piddle but you couldn't blame her. I had half her crate with paper and half with a towel, this works really good. I always take her out in the morning as soon as she wakes up not when I get up (sometimes it 1am or 2am). I always start with lets go poopies and we walk to one spot. At first it was difficult but after about 2 or 3 weeks she got the picture. I then would bring her back in and give her breakfast and put her back in her crate. I get up at 5am and again take her out of her crate, say lets go poopies and she would go, right before putting her back in the crate before I would leave for work I would take her back outside lets go poopies and she would go. Now remember you have to always have them at your sight. When ever I would see her drink water I wait 15 to 20 minutes and back out to do poopies. I never never loose sight of her I always have a gate and keep her with me at all times. She is so good now that if she has to go out she walks right to the back door and again I say lets go poopies and out we go. She is 6 pounds now and I hope she would be able to hold her bladder longer. I know this seems like work but it really works if you keep your eye on her. When I have company and I really can't watch her I will put her in her crate so she doesn't have an accident. She likes her crate so it's OK with her. It has been fun having a puppy. Does anyone know about how many pounds she is going to be? Lexy is now 6 pounds and 15 weeks old, Her dad is 5 or 6 pounds and her mom is 16 pounds. Thanks, Sandra, Lexy's mom |

Congratulations in training Lexy. She is a cutie. Your hard and consistent work has pay up. To estimate how many pounds she is going to be, the 12 weeks weight is double. Like I said is just an estimate, every pup is different. Probably Lexy will be around 10 lbs. | |

| Just be patient with him. Just be thankful that he will go outside to pee and that he is not hiking his leg on everything in your home. With my situation it took a coupal of months of consistency before my yorkie was completely trained. She has only had 1 accident in the last year and that was just recently she is expecting pups and I just didn't get her outside quick enough. It can be a very slow but rewarding process. Just continually praise him when he does what you want him to do. |

| I remember I took my 2 week vacation to house train my Yorkie. I set the timer for every 90 minutes (there little bladders are so tiny) during the day. I didn't let her on the floor when the buzzer went off but picked her up out of the crate and then put her down outside. I gave her some time and you can see why house training it easier spring, summer and fall. When she came in I played with her and let her run around for a half hr. and then back to the crate. At night I put a pee pee pad in her crate and really hoped she would wake up and cry to go out but if not she peed on the pp pad and I could use that the next day as she could pick up the scent and realized I was alot happier when she did it there and not on the floor or rug. They are just babies. You have received lots of good advise and it does take time - you will need a special cleaner to get to the spots in the house she has used or your little one will go back to that spot. They learn "No" and catch on to that, too. I'm glad I trained her to pp pads also. I can go out and not worry about her having to hold it and with winter weather on the eastern part of the country it makes not having to go out early mornings wonderful. I crated her about a month and she was doing good long after that but it was work - I didn't leave her side. You can do it!!! They all react a little differently and come around in their own time but my time really paid off. An 8 wk will take longer than a 12 or 16 wk pup. Someone gave you good advise in using a very very very small treat when they what you want helps reinforce. You can break up one of those tiny liver treats into 8 or 10 pieces so they just get a tiny taste, you don't want to mess up there stomack. Good Luck from Joan and Crystal |

| Oh, I'm so sorry Lexy is a male - Oh well same advise except on the pp pad fell a small water bottle (16 oz) with sand or stones and put it in the middle of the pad if and when he starts lifting his leg. Joan |
