| Hi, I find that it is best to use both. I crate my puppy when we are going to be gone during the day when running errands. I also crate Millie Sage at night. but when I am home and I cannot watch her or need some relaxing time, I put her in the x-pen. I will put her in the x-pen during the day when I am going to work, too. I use a pee pee pad in the x-pen only while at work. When we are home, she goes outside for potty. I don't really want her to use the pee pad, but I don't see anyway around it while we are at work. But until she learns to ask to go outside, it's either the x-pen, the crate, or constant - consistent supervision for her, no exceptions. |

| When Maggie was younger, I used the crate at night, with a cover over it. It was located next to my bed. At night, I took her outside every two hours . During the day, she was under constant eye. If I couldn't watch her every move, then she was placed in her x-pen. During the day, I took her outside every hour. She is 5 months old and completely housetrained. She now rings a bell on our backdoor, to be let outside. Which ever method you choose, just remember to stick with it. If you slack one time, you might as well start over. Took 2 months, to completely train Maggie.
