4-day old puppy help please. Hi, I am new and have not really read everything on how to use this but I have an emergency question. To make a long story short, I got a female Yorkie adult from a breeder and never heard from the breeder again when I asked questions. She got pregnant with one of my males...I am not a breeder. She had a C-section, the first was in the birth canal too long and died, the other 2 a male and a female made it until this morning when I found the male dead. The female seems okay but I am not sure if she is eating. I have been bottle feeding since day 1 and the mama finally on day 2 was taking care of them, licking them but wasn't producing milk. I would squeeze the nipples but don't know if I did it right and got no milk. The puppy is sucking on them but I don't know if she has gotten any. I tried to bottle feed but she didn't want it. She has not gained any weight in 2 days as far as I can tell with my digital postal scale cause she squirms a lot. Would she cry if she was hungry. Can I assume she is getting milk from mama? Thank you for any help you can give me. I don't have a car and can't get to a vet and so you guys are my only help at this time, which is greatly appreciated. Robbin By the way...I did have her spayed at the time of the C-section so we won't be going through this again.

The milk doesn't come in for a few days, at first it is colestrum (sp) which the puppies need for immunity. I had to help them attach to the nipple at first, you gently squeeze (and I mean very, very lightly) at the back of the mouth to get it open and squeeze mama's teet and put them on, they will lick and sniff and attach. This is how the lady who mentored me showed me to get them attached at first. Then all I had to do after that is put them by the nipple, they would sniff and find it on their own, now I do nothing, they get there by themselves... they did after a couple of days. I do have one that eats a lot and would push the others out of the way, so at times I hold him and let the other two eat for a bit before I let him by mama. I would advise you to find someone with a car to get you to the vet though, did the vet check the roofs of their mouth when they were born? Are they warm enough? for at least the first 10 days they can not maintain body temp and have to be kept very warm. Is your mama's teets red and hard? does she have a temp? Have you tried different formula for the one that isn't eating? There are others here with a lot more knowledge than I have, so hopefully they will be checking soon.

That maybe why the breeder sold her(not producing milk). Are her tits swollen, red or hot? (that could be Mastis) If your not sure the pups are nursing or there isn't any milk, you may need to take them to the vet to be tube fed, or it would be nice to find another mother dog to nurse them for you.(probably not an option) A hungry pup will cry. Do your pups have full looking bellies?

Thank you so much for your information. I don't know if the vet checked their roofs of the mouth. I do know that the puppy will suck on mama and keep sucking, which is why I think she may be getting food because wouldn't she try another nipple. Her nipples do not seem hard. In fact, the vet had told me they were inverted and that hopefully they will come out, which I know of one that did and that is the one the pup is sucking. The others are just flat. I know the puppy lays under the mama so I am hoping that is keeping her warm enough. I have towels wrapped all around the pen they are in and they are in my office, which is the hottest room in the house because of the computers I guess. No, I haven't tried a different formula because they were eating it the first day when the mama was healing from her C-section and the drugs she was on. Since she has been with mama, no formula taking.

I even tried to get a hold of that breeder to get any background information she could give me on Phoebe (the mama) but her web site has been cancelled. Go figure!! Her tits are not swollen, red or hot. They are inverted except for one and that is the one the puppy keep sucking. She sucks and doesn't let go, doesn't cry and looks very content, does not try to look for another nipple, which is why I think she may be getting milk. But still not sure. My hubby will be home about 4ish so I can go to the vet perhaps. The belly seems okay, not skinny. No, definitely no other mother dogs to give the puppy food. Well she is not crying, so I take that as a good sign then. Thank you so much. I am so glad my mother found this site for me. She was being a mother and trying to help since she knows nothing about puppy caring either. Thanks a bunch again.

I think if she is sucking and her belly looks full then she must be getting the cholestrum (sp) When my pups were first born, they ate a lot, most of the time they fell asleep attached. You can also call your vet for advice, at least I did.. they didn't seem to mind. If your vet won't help you on the phone, then call another, usually the vet techs can answer questions, and can ask you questions to decide if a vet visit is in order. I don't want to bring in my pups unless nec. to the vets, since most animals there at the vets are sick. Good luck with the baby, make sure mom eats well, and has water at all times.

| Might I suggest since the baby is two days old take her in for a vet check he needs to see her since the little brother died, if the vet believes she is doing fine and in good health, have her tail cropped and declaws removed, should be done 3-5 days anyway. I would also suggest take in the mommy, she should be checked out..your puppy not properly feeding from the mom could be life or death this young. You can suppliment using esbilac, I mix it with goats milk they seem to love it if you cant find that mix it with condensed milk. hope this helps, I would get vet attention right away you dont want to lose the last little baby. good luck
