| Male yorkie won't mount female...why? I've had a male yorkie for 3 days here at my home trying to mate with my female. She is on her 10th day of heat and became interested in him yesterday, but he's not interested in her at all. I only have him for one more day, so I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions on how to help this little boy do what he needs to do? |

| Is this an experienced male, how old is he? First of all it is always recommended that the female go to the males house to be bred. Most females are not even ready to be bred until the 11th day of their heat cycle. The male might sense that she is not ready. Are you leaving them together? The male and female should be kept separated until you are ready to breed them. Then you put them together and closely supervise the breeding. It is always recommended that you hold the female while the male is mounting her. If the male is showing no interest then it is probably because he is unexperienced, to young or the female is not ready. |

| I suppose I should have given more information. Sorry for that. I have 2 yorkies, a brother and a sister. My boy is spayed, and this is my little girls 2nd time in heat. She's is 17 months old and the stud is around 20 months old. He has been used approximately 5 times to stud with other females and has been successful yorks. As a matter of fact, the lady I got the stud from has 2 females pregnant by him right now (one was a surprise for her ). Bella is very interested now (she wasn't the first couple of days), and we now have noticed her mounting him and trying to hump him. He just growled at her and ran away. He sniffs her and is obviously checking on her, but he doesn't seem to want to mount her. We've left them alone for 2-3 hours yesterday and the day before. So, unfortunately we are unsure if they did the deed or not. I'd like to have one visual confirmation before sending him home. I could ask the lady if Bella could go to her house and see if it happens there. However, I'm unsure it's a good idea for her to go to a home with 2 pregnant females. I will suggest it to her though. I am obviously a newby, but I've have done quite a bit of research....and this one has me a little stumped. We plan to keep two of the puppies and we have numerous family members and friends who are "fighting" over any left . I'm not sure I want to let anyone have them.... |

| Well, your first mistake is leaving them alone unattended. It can be very dangerous for male and female. Some females go crazy when the male ties her and they start pulling and flipping and that can injure them. How big is the male and female? Since the male is experienced he may know that she is not ready or he could have bred her when you were not there. It really surprises me that someone would send their stud to someone else's house. I know a lady that did that one time and her little stud ended up getting killed by the bitch after the bitches owner left them unattended. |

| Wow..didn't know the bitch could be so agressive. My little girl is very submissive and rarely growls or even gets aggressive with anyone. We watched them for a few days before leaving them alone. She was always in the same bed with him and when he tried to mount her a few times, she just put her tail down and scooted away. She wasn't ready. We sent the male home and brought him back a few days later. He tried again and she just lowered her tail and scooted away. No aggresiveness at all. At this point we figured they would be ok alone together. We sat outside the bathroom listening and no sounds came out of the room at all. When we'd peak in, they were in the bed together snuggling. I think I will call the stud's owner today and see if she's interested in letting Bella come to her house to see how it goes. I know his mommy is missing him so much. He's such a sweet little boy and sleeps with me under my covers snuggled up against me. He seems to be more in love with me than Bella. Like I had said, this is our first time and this is how it was suggested to us to do it by the stud owner. Thank you for your reply. |

(1) Never leave breeders alone...if they tie, and the female decides she wants to leave the area, she can permanently damage the male....you should never leave two breeding dogs alone. (2) You never take the male to the female....you always take the female to the male.....territory thing. (3) These dogs have to breed three times....I do mine consecutively, alot of breeders skip a day between breedings. I could number about 20 more things you need to know and appreciate..... You actually have an enormous amount of learning to do before you breed....you are endangering your female and the stud as well, leaving them unattended to "do the deed unsupervised"....he can be irreparably damaged. The babies that may happen from this breeding.....do you have health certifications/history of the male and female for at the very least 7 generations back? There can be all kinds of deformities and congenital defects that may surface in any of these puppies. Are you going to be medically responsible for deformed or terminally ill babies that may be born? Your female could die having this litter of puppies.....are you ready to sacrifice her life of a litter of genetically unknown puppies, for friends? There is soooooo much missing from this situation.....The fourth sentence in your post speaks volumes.....you have about 4 years of intense research, studying, genetic research, Yorkie lines that are healthy and ones that are notoriously unhealthy, and which lines you just do NOT mix and match because of issues that have a propensity to surface. Please, rethink this thing you are about to do...is it worth the life of your female? That is a question you should ask everytime you breed her. Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 07-29-2015 at 10:44 PM. | |

Sometimes it requires a lot of time and patience to get two dogs bred. Never leave the two dogs alone unattended.

| Yes, he could be to young or he could just be intimated. Some boys are shy when it comes to breeding. I have been raising yorkies for over 17 years I know that not all males are cut out to be stud dogs. Some males will only breed females that they are used to being around. What is the size of the male and female your are trying to breed?

| I would not recommend breeding a 4 lb female. It can be really risky.
