Well, your first mistake is leaving them alone unattended. It can be very dangerous for male and female. Some females go crazy when the male ties her and they start pulling and flipping and that can injure them. How big is the male and female? Since the male is experienced he may know that she is not ready or he could have bred her when you were not there.

It really surprises me that someone would send their stud to someone else's house. I know a lady that did that one time and her little stud ended up getting killed by the bitch after the bitches owner left them unattended.
