whelping help i have a 3 and a half year old female yorkie-mini poodle mix named sassy she is around 50-55 days pregnant, i need to know what to use for a proper whelping box, and any tips i can get, this is her second litter but this is the first time i have taken care of a pregnant dog, i have a friend who's mom breeds small and big dogs so i think i will ask her to supervise, my vet said to expect a 4-6 litter, once the puppies are born what do i feed sassy, when should i start feeding them puppy food and what type of puppy food should i use Last edited by luckywolf968; 01-13-2015 at 10:15 AM.

| Did you do an X-ray to know how many pups? Why are you breeding a mixed dog not even once but twice? There are so very many mixes in shelters and being euthanized each year that making more is only making the issues worse. I hope you spay her after this.

read before you speak please "this is the first time i have taken care of a pregnant dog" we bought her from someone who bred her one time so this is her second litter, but she is the first dog that i have bred, she bred with my male yorkie mix Sam, i am sorry that i am not a professional dog breeder, some of us don't have hundreds of dollars to start a dog breeding program, i prefer mix breed dog to pure bred because they are less likely to get breed related problems, this is the first time my mom has let me breed any dogs we get, we usually get them fixed asap, so i am sorry that i don't have alot of experience, you do not have to make people feel like crap because they don't know what to do, it's people like you who make people feel like they cant ask for help because they think they are going to be put down and made fun of for not knowing, so if all your going to do is criticize someone for asking questions then you really don't need to answer peoples questions.

proof mixed breed dogs usually live longer than pure breeds, my friend had to put down his 8 year old pure breed boxer because he was suffering from a breed related problem, most pure bred boxers dont live past 10 they start having hip problems at 8, i have a 10 year old boxer mix who acts like he is 4 years old he has no problems running around in my neighbors field all day. i would never breed a dog unless i had good homes for the puppies, i do care about my dogs and want to share the joy that a small puppy can bring Last edited by luckywolf968; 01-14-2015 at 11:20 AM.

Hi there luckywolf968. It sounds like you might be the kid in the household and your mother has allowed you to let your dog have a litter of pups? Please do not take offense to the replies you have gotten so far. Most of us here feel pretty strongly about keeping the Yorkie breed pure, but that in no way means your little Sassy is any less precious! That being said.. 1. A whelping box can be just a flat box your little girl can stretch out in lined with a puppy pad or newspaper that can be easily changed out in between births. 2. You should already have your little girl on a higher fat/protein/calcium diet ( a good quality puppy food with an additional calcium supplement would do). 3. There is also a good whelping pudding mix recipe in this forum that I am using for my girl. I mix it with the puppy food that I have soaked in warm water to make soft and feed it to her 3 times a day along with a bowl of dry puppy food being available to her at all times. Continue this diet until she weans the puppies completely then gradually introduce her normal adult diet food. 4. Please do have your friend on call to come help with the whelping in case any complications arise. If your friend is a professional breeder, they should be able to give you advice as well. Have your Vets emergency number on hand as well. 5. Please read up on what the signs are that your little Sassy is beginning labor so that you will know when to start getting things ready and she is not left alone. Good luck in bringing those little bundles of joy into the world and read...read...read...fast so that you will know the work that goes into making sure you have healthy Mom and pups.

Look up Debra Jensens website on breeding, it covers a lot of the basics. Your female should not have calcium extra supplements while pregnant (unless your vet has done blood work) and the vet says she is low on calcium. Calcium can be fed after whelping. I would read that website then ask the lady who is willing to help you whelp for advice. Try to make your questions specific, as this is a big topic and quite frankly folks spends years studying and learning all those basics prior to breeding. You need to learn the basics - and there is a lot of info on the web as well as in libraries. You have a lot to learn in 63 short days.
