| I think Zoey is starting her labor.... We have a yorkie and this is her second litter. First litter her temp never dropped, stayed in the 99 range 10 days prior to whelping. She did nest a little bit but wasn't wanting to be alone or anything and then 45 minutes later she had a pup. Was very not "normal" compared to what you read and are told it's supposed to be like. Anyways, I have been taking her temperature for the past 7 days and she has been in the 99.4-99.9 range. This morning her temperature dropped to 98.6 and at lunch it is now 97.8 and staying there. She has decided she wants to just lay in her whelping box and is digging just a little here and there. My question is- since her temperature is normally not over 100.5 even when she is not pregnant, how low is too low for her temperature? That's really my only concern right now. She has not been eating this morning, but did eat a treat at lunch time. |

| My girls temp. dropped really low yesterday (hours before whelping), but I was told it was dangerously too low when I saw it was 97.7. When it gets below 98 degrees, it's an indication of shock. I'd contact your vet to see what he/she thinks. Luckily, Maya's temp. went back up almost as soon as it dropped. But this was just the beginning of problems to come. Ah, are we glad that part is over. Whew!

| Zoey had her puppy Yes we had problems too... ended up at the vet her water broke and she didn't start having puppies. We had to take her in for a few shots to start contractions. She had one puppy at the vet and the other was delivered hours later at home but it was born dead So sad. The vet gave her this foamy stuff in her mouth and it made her throw up and she threw up quite a lot of blood. He didn't seem to think this was weird but now she's not eating very well... will only eat a little yogurt and a little wet food, no dry food. We took her back in for a check yesterday since her temp was 102 all night/day and they thought she was fine. 102 is high for her (normal for her is 100-101) so I'm a little concerned about an infection but other than being hot and not eating very well she seems to be fine, is going to the bathroom and trotting around the house when she's on a break from puppy. I'm imagining her tummy is not feeling too well from vomiting at the vet. She is still producing milk. I turned the heating pad off in her whelping box last night since she is so warm there is no way that puppy can be cold she curls right up all around him. |

| I'm sorry that you had problems. I would just keep a good eye on her. When Sammy had to go to the vet for an emergency c-section, she was throwing up blood too. The vet wasn't worried about it as he said she got if from cleaning her puppy, she had the first one naturally. Anyway, he said that you cannot digest blood, so that's why she threw up. She didn't feel too well after everything was over, but she did fine after 24 hours. I hope your little one feels better soon. Congrats on the puppy.

| Good to know. Our vet didn't want to do a C-section. The other pup was not moving and he thought she would be able to deliver it, no sense in paying for a C-section if the pup would be dead if she could deliver it. The water had broke 2 hours prior to her having her first live puppy so there was no way it would have made it by the time we got to the vet she was having green discharge. The thing that made me furious was that we called the vet and the first person I spoke to wasn't concerned that her water had broke and she had no puppy. After a half hour I was worried and called a different vet and he was very concerned and told me to call the vet that we were already using. The second time I called the vet told me to get here there asap and that most likely both pups were dead and of course I started freaking out- had they said that the first time I called them I would have been there! Zoey had had no problems w/ her first litter so I was unprepared for problems this time. Anyways I got there and they made me sit in the waiting room for 20+ minutes which really annoyed me since they sounded like it was an EMERGENCY and she is having GREEN discharge- shouldn't she get priority over a dog getting shots? Anyways, finally a different vet (there are 6+ at this clinic) came to get us- I was so upset in tears and was very angry at this point and he got her to have one w/ the calcium gel and an oxytocin shot. She wouldn't have the other one even though we waited an hour as it had already detached from the uterus over 2 hours ago at this point and it was not moving. He sent us home w/ instructions to call if it was not delivered in an hour. It was delivered- but was not alive. I tried to revive it anyway, but there was no way it had already passed. I am so afraid to ever breed her again..... |

| I will try to post some tomorrow- am not really sure how to on here. Do you think the dew claw will get infected? The vet who did Zoey's last litter did a great job- no blood very small wound but this vet left a LARGE open wound still bleeding when we left and like I mentioned before I had to clean it and seal it w/ super glue to get it to stop. Stupid me believed the vet when she said it would stop bleeding- it bled for over an hour and then eventually clotted just to start bleeding again a few hours later at that point I grabbed the glue. Zoey is doing better with eating now so now all I really am a little concerned about is the pup's dew claw wound. Last edited by msobey; 11-11-2009 at 09:55 AM. |

| My vet stitches the dew claw. I think now that you glued it and it is no longer bleeding you will be ok.

| The dew claws and tail was docked yesterday at 1 day old. Tail dock looked fine but the dew claw removal looked awful! I have always done them the next day as I take mom in to get checked over for my peace of mind especially w/ the complications this time. This vet just didn't do a good job on the dew claws at all. Last time the vet clamped, twisted the claw off and then quickstop'd it to stop bleeding. Wound was very small. This time it looks like this other lady took scissors to the thing! The wound is very large and it kept bleeding and bleeding and she didn't stop the bleeding before we left. I held mom in the vet room and she took the pup out back to the surgical room since last time my momma dog tried to bite the vet when she heard her puppy crying so I don't know what she did but it looked painful and open. Like I said put super glue on it, got it to stop bleeding and cleaned it well before gluing. I just hope it doesn't get infected.... Last edited by msobey; 11-11-2009 at 02:22 PM. |

| I sure hope it doesn't. And this vet doesn't sound like she knows what the heck she's doing. ??? And my little girls had theirs done today, they're now 2 days old. We went into the vet, had their tails/dewclaws done and then I came home. A little while later, I went in to check on everyone and noticed my little Marina still had her back dewclaws. From what I understand, it's not common for them to have them on their back feet, but Marina had them alright. I guess the vet just overlooked it; we had to take her in again (poor thing) and have the back done. I felt awful because when we got home the first time, I told her that it was all over. So that just makes me a big fat liar. Poor little Marina. Well, keep us posted on the little one. Hopefully the wound will heal nicely, I'm sure it will. good luck!
