Lol...oh my. That would not be good.

So far....she just won't venture out of her whelping box. No other changes that I haven't mentioned yet. I did get her to come out twice for some food....and a pee/poo.

I will keep you updated....could be a while tho

Keep watching......first stages of labor - Uterine contractions, dilation of cervixabdominal discomfort, panting, etc; may last 3 to 6 hours.....

However, some may not, for whatever reason, advice to second stage......if first stage continues too long....you might want to put a call into your vet and/or take her in.

Ok. She doesn't have any contractions yet...no panting or visible discomfort. Just wanting to be in her box. So, do I need to worry how long she continues just that? Or...when she starts contracting and it takes longer than 3-6 hours...then call?

Basically...if first stage includes contractions and panting...she's not there yet...do I need to worry that she's been in her box since early morning with no visible progression?

I had a new litter a couple of days ago, mom started trying to hide and get away from the other dogs around 1 p.m. in the afternoon. Her first pup was not delivered until around 9:30 p.m.

That is eight hours....which I am at now with her leaving her box only to eat and pee. No panting, no contractions....periodically shifting about but not much.....is she still ok? Her gums are warm and she is in no stress by appearance. I can still feel pups shift a bit.

She is just fine. It usually takes first time bitches longer to have their first pup. Also, the size of the female and the size of the pups makes a difference too. I don't usually worry until once they have been pushing hard for an hour without a pup starting to present itself. Has she been having more bowel movements than normal? I know mine usually start having lots of bowel movements prior to the hard contractions starting. Sometimes the heavy panting will not start until the hard contractions start.

Also, I have been fooled many times when I swore a female was in labor and I stayed up all night and nothing happened. It can get very frustrating.

She had a small BM very early hours this morning...that's when she went straight in her box. She had another BM and plenty of pees throughout the day.

I would say she is rather large....I am fairly certain there is a min of three in there....potentially a couple more than that though. Right now they are still in a position they were in early this morning which is pretty much three side by side on her front....I say a couple potential more because there is fluttering up by her ribs by her spine. Again, I am new....don't really have anything to compare to. I do see and feel three lumps for sure.

So, she could go all night being calm but in the box? Yeesh...I'm gonna be nervous and feeling for movement often, lol.

Oh, my oldest came in here to talk with her and went to rub her belly....she growled at her. She never does that!

She sounds like she's progressing.

The info I gave you above was only to educate you and keep you informed that sometimes some bitches won't progress to 2nd stage labor, so be vigilant.......there is more to this whelping than meets the eye. I know, I know.....too much information.

I have never had one growl at me but mine will definitely growl at other dogs when they are in the early stages of labor. Once I see mine trying to get away from the other dogs I know it is time for us to move to the bedroom where it is quiet. I will just kick back and watch tv with one eye on the momma. The nerve racking part comes when the hard contractions start. I try to not bother the momma to much then because they need to concentrate. I will just reach down occasionally when the momma is having a hard contraction and feel for the puppy bulge. Once I feel the pup bulging I watch mom very closely. Sometimes the pup will bulge during a contraction but when the contractions stop the pup will go back in. With each set of contractions the pup should come out a little more. Eventually when enough of the pup has presented itself she will push it on out. It can get very stressful when a pup is stuck half in and half out. Also, don't be surprised if mom lets out a big yelp when the pup pops out.

Let me add to Barb's bulging scenario....when you see a bulge under the tail.....pup is just about due to be whelped.....it's in the canal and ready to enter the world.

Also, I need to add to what Mary posted is that sometimes the first bulge is a water sack and not a pup. It can get very perplexing to first time whelpers. Sometimes the water sack can appear an hour or so before the pup appears.

You're right, but the sack will emerge much easier than that pup....The bulge is under the tail, then it's out........

I know in the beginning when I saw the sack and was unsure....I'd gently push on the outer edge to see if I felt any resistance, or just felt like a water ballon.

Marc, my very first litter, my little girl went about 12 hours just laying in her whelping box (or trying to hide under my bed). If you have a good relationship with your vet, you may want to call and give them a head's up with what's happening, just in case you have to contact them in the middle of the night, it's nice if they have a little warning. However, if your little girl looks like she is not stressed, go with your gut, she is probably just having a long labor as it is her first litter. Be glad she is giving YOU some warning, I have had one give no warning at all, just squat and push out a pup in the middle of my kitchen floor, no warning at all.

This water sack....it contains no pup.....what's it purpose then?

She sauntered out just now so I fed her and took her down the street for a short walk. She pooped then all the way home continued to try and poo when she was done already and not constipated based on her first bm.

We got home....she ruffled up my blankets then went into her box.
