| Help with Breeder I purchased my baby from a breeder, I was looking for a small yorkie. She had one, she was the runt of the litter and basically a miracle due to it being a larger litter than normal. we picked her up 1 weeks after Mother's Day. She was born on Feb. 19th, at least that's what we were told by the breeder. We have yet to see her papers. She had a cough when we picked her up, the breeder claims she didn't have a cough, she was treated for kennel cough but did not respond to the meds. It was a weekend at 3 a.m. she totally lost her appetite and wouldn't drink, she was lifeless, her breathing was very strained. The breeder had told us when we bought her if she starts to crash please call me and give me a chance to take care of her, she was sure she would be okay but just incase. Because of the hour we made a quick choice to take her to the emergency animal hospital which we could throw a rock and hit the building or drive 20 min. to the breeder and hope she was home. This was an emergency. She only weighed a pound and a quarter when we got her and now she weighed 1.14. They ran tests on her and her blood work came out fine except her white count was elevated. They did an x-ray, wasn't a very good picture. The Dr. told us she was fighting an infection but he didn't know what it was, after a 7 hour stay she seemed to eat a bit but not much improvement, we took her to our Vet. She looked at her x-rays and said the hospital didn't feel she had pneumonia but she felt she did. She took another x-ray and she was convinced it was pneumonia and treated her as such. BUT she doesn't have staff overnight and because of Cappy condition she requested we have her spend the night at the emergency hospital and bring her back in the morning, she would keep her during the day. She also was very concerned that the x-ray showed she has a VERY LARGE HEART. At the hospital she was on IV fluids and had a breathing treatment. It was the difference between night and day. Thank God she was on her way back. It took 3 stays at the animal hosp. and one stay with our Vet. To get her perky, eating and running around like a mad thing. It also took over $1,500.00 later. I was told by the Vet at the animal hospital that the AKC offers 60 days free health coverage on new puppies up to $1,500.00. We've reached that, I emailed the breeder and gave her all the info....she freaked. She said don't let them run any tests on her she's to little. She could have taken care of her, she told us it was pneumonia. Without even seeing her, she's not a vet but she knew what it was. I feel she had pneumonia before we even bought her, he breeder had us wait an additional week before we could take her home, she gave us a card that said she had received treatment or vaccine for kennel cough on 4-18 whichever I'm not sure and she had a cough when we picked her up. After all of her treatments she still has a cough when she wakes up in the morning. When she runs around with our other 2 dogs it clears up. I feel it in my gut that she is going to have other medical conditions, I've been trying to get ahold of the breeder to get me her AKC reg. forms. She has not answered my emails or my phone calls and I'm at a loss as to what to do. I feel the breeder holds some responsibility. If anything at least give us her AKC registration papers so we can get the insurance. She needs an Ultrasound of her heart. Somethings wrong because the cough won't go away. On the bill of sale it states we will not receive her AKC registration until we have her spayed at 8 months and give proof. This isn't a joke, I can't afford many more Vet bills. I need that insurance. What can I do? Is the breeder responsible for any of the bills? |

| I don't think that trial period insurance begins until after you send in registration papers, I doubt it applies retroactively. You might contact AKC to see how that works. |

| Can you share the name of the breeder? I am from New York and would not want to go through the heart ache that you are going through. It's horrible how some people can knowingly sell you a sick puppy and not explain things to you about it at all.

| I'm kind of confused, this breeder sold you the puppy while she had a feeling the puppy had pnemonia? I don't know anything about the AKC insurance question that you asked, but I just wanted to say that I think you did the right thing by going to the animal hospital. If she were my dog, I would've done the same, even if it was a weekday afternoon and I knew the breeder was home! The breeder is not a vet, and doesn't have the devices that they do at the animal hospital. To me it wouldn't be worth taking her to the breeder, getting the breeders opinion, then taking her to the hospital, it would be hospital first, and call the breeder just to tell her what was going on. Especially the way you described her condition, definitly an emergency and when theres emergencies theres no time to waste! I hope your baby is feeling better and that all is going to be well with her!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry your baby is sick. With any insurance they won't cover any condition that was treated before you have applied and been accepted so I doubt AKC will help. Sorry. I knwo when I brought Cali home from a breeder, not a good one, she had kennel cough and went hypoglycemic and had liver shunt, the breederr did nothing. But when my girls had the kennel cough they would cough more in the morning and at night and it took over 3 months to completely clear up. I hope you can get some help from the breeder and your baby gets better soon.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | A couple of things.... Treatment of mild to moderate kennel cough does not require prescription medicine. It usually clears up on it's own. If she was given a vaccine against kennel cough...that would be bordetello. It is a preventative not a treatment. Bacterial pneumonia can be secondary to severe kennel cough. This would be treated with antibotics. Was your puppy tested for coccidea while at the vet's? Other than the cough...the symptoms you describe are identical to symptoms my Reese had when he was diagnosed. Including the signs of infection...but at the time...my vet hadn't taken a stool sample to test for coccidea...so she didn't know what was causing the infection. During that visit Reese was also diagnosed with an enlarged heart via an x ray. Even though he acted fine...after being treated for the coccidea...I still made an appointment with a cardiologist. His heart is fine. The cardiologist explained regular vets use an image chart to compare with x rays. Yorkies...as a breed....have larger hearts. It's not abnormal. That being said...a cough can be a symptom of heart problems. Perhaps your puppy's cough is simply from the pneumonia. If puppy only coughs in the morning....and not whenever she is exerting herself...it probably is not heart related....we'll hope so. It is common for breeders to with hold akc registration papers until neutering is performed. Did you have any other contract? Some offer a health guarantee if you have problems within a certain time period. If there isn't a health guarantee or no contract at all...your only recourse is likely via the court system. PS If your puppy is very small...go purchase a tube of nytrical. Give her a bit every morning and evening. This will keep her blood sugar up and prevent her from "crashing" from hypoglcemia.

| I just feel that prior to picking up Cappy she may have had pneumonia and had been treated but wasn't fully recovered. The breeder made us wait about 2 weeks before we could bring her home. She wanted to make sure she was strong enough. We thought it was just because she was tiny and the runt of the litter. The breeder seemed caring and genuine enough and maybe she is. But when we got in the car and she coughed we just assumed it was nothing really because of how great she said Cappy had been doing, eating putting on weight. First one to the food bowl. When I got her home she would take one bite out of the food bowl than she wouldn't eat. Under the breeder directions I was giving her pedalyte and baby food with a dropper at night her other food during the day I was hand feeding her. Our experience with her may just be a one bad incident. My disappointment with her is this, I feel she had pneumonia sometime before we got her, I feel the breeder may have felt she was out of the woods so she allowed us to take her home. Because she is so tiny and ran a serious risk of having medical problems why would she have not let us register her and just limit the papers. I was told you can give the papers and make it so you cannot breed the dog, if you do you can't register the puppies. However that's done I'm not really sure. I have 2 other dogs and they have both been fixed. It just is a bitter pill to swallow when we paid $2,500. for Cappy and over $1,500. for vet bills and more to follow. When had she given us the papers we would have had the insurance. We had spoken to the breeder about the insurance and she was going to look into it. We haven't heard from her this is going back to June 5th. We've emailed her and phoned her with no results. I know my only action will be through the court system, I was really hoping it wouldn't go that way, if you had met the breeder she seemed like such a caring and compassionate person or maybe I was just hearing what I wanted to because the first time I met Cappy I fell in love. Thank you for all of the advice given. I will get the nytrical, can I get it at any pet store? |

| help with breeder The breeder has some responsibility in all of this. Write up a very firm letter with all the facts, copy the vet papers, diagnosis etc..and send her a certified letter. Give her a deadline, also state that you need resolution and if not you will contact AKC- she can't "hold" your papers, breeders do, I know, but AKC doesn't go along with that. If her dogs are sick in her home, and you let AKC know, they will go out and inspect her. It seems she knew this puppy was ill before it left, or she wouldn't have told you to bring it back to her if something happened. Duncanmom |

| I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I hope she gets better soon. It's true that the kennel cough vaccine is not 100% and actually can give side affects that include a runny nose and cough. The AKC papers you are thinking of are limited AKC although some breeders just hold the papers until proof of spay is done ALTHOUGH you should have that in writing according to AKC.

Does your breeder have a health guarantee on her dogs? Paying $2500 for a puppy should mean you are dealing with a top notch breeder! You said she only lives 20 min from you...if she isn't answering your calls why don't you just go to her house and see her! Unfortunately if she does not offer a health guarantee then I'm not sure if she is responsible once the dog leaves her house. Good luck with everything!
