| Emergency c-section Hello Phoebe's labor started this am. Bag of water broje at 6:30, and she started pushing at 9 am. after 2 hrs. I called the vet and they gace her oxi sshot x 2, and said he would wait 1 hr and see what happened. He was in surgery, and I was waiting by phoebe, and she keep straining. I told the vet I want a c-section, and he finally started it at 1;00 pm. I went home to get things cleaned up for her, and they called and said everthing went well. but there was a large dead baby girl stuck in the birth canal, but she had 2 healthy baby boys. Now she is home and seems out of it. she will not lay down and des not seem interested in her babies. Is this from the meds, is this normal, I am getting worried.

| Glad you insisted on the C-section.Sometimes Vets wait too long or jump the gun ! She is probably in some pain today and feeling the meds. From what I've read on here ,a bitch that just had a C-section might not want to be with her pups or nurse them right away. Is she nursing them or are you feeding them? Genie,Cookie,Lola & Angel |

| Is this her first litter? Some yorkies are just not maternal at first. especially first time moms. You might have to lay down by the whelping box with her to get her to stay with them. Her milk may be a little slower coming in because of the c-section, but once it does, she will settle down to being a mommy. BTW sorry about the girl and congrats on the boys

| I have been through two c-sections in the last 3 months. Just give her time and keep the pups warm and with her. That is the best. It will take her awhile to come out of it completely. The pups can still nurse mama. Get them sucking on her. It may take some of the pups a little help sometime, because they also get a little (not much) of the gas. If you have to you can hold them on if needed. Also you will need to make sure they have gone potty both way. It is important to get the first stool out. You can do this by putting a little vaseline on your finger and brush back-n-forth on their bottoms. Mama will take over with this once she is completely awake. Watch her temp - every morning and evening. If it goes over 102. call the vet and he will give you an antibiotic for her. The vets don't always give it now. Cici had to have antibiotic, but Gigi did not. If you have to give antibiotic - also give mom and pups Bene-Bac. It will help her keep the good bacteria, she needs. Also pups do not need milk for the first 24-48 hours. They can use glucose and seterile water and is better - check Anne Seranne's book for how to make it, if needed. But only if they do not suck. I had a pup that I had to handfeed, since she was stuck for so long. Mama's milk is the best. She should do fine - just give her time. Keep her warm, but not overheated - also make sure they are not near any drafts. Also after a c-section many yorkies want to be hand feed. There is a great recipe for ones that won't eat - Mother Nature's Pudding Recipe. I think we have this on file here. They love this and I had to spoon feed both of my girl this for about 7 days. Also add in the cottage cheese and a good protein soft food, chicken is good too. Best of luck and let us know how it goes. T. |

| The last c-section Lexie had with the monkeys, her first litter she didn't want to much to do with them, I was really afraid that it was going to be a big problem, the next morning your couldn't tear her away from them, I think its the meds and first time mommy. Let us know how she is doing, Congratulations on the 2 boys and so sorry about your little girl. RIP little girl angel.

| Miss Bridget also had a c- section just about 11 days ago. When she came home she was also out of it, she was up and down and virtually uninterested in the puppies, I would hold her down, and attach the pups, after a few hours the sedation completely wore off and she was fine, and became a great mom. Give her time, keep those babies warm and try to have them latch on, it is ideal to have them nurse within the first 2 hours, even if you have to attach them and hold momma. Make sure you are within close proxcimity(sp) to make sure momma does not get agitated with them, but she should come around within a few hours. C-sections suck, they litereally take mom out of the look and suddenly she has babies, just take a bit for them to see they are their own. Good lUck and keep mom loaded with calcium enriched foods to avoid my circumstance, although with 2 puppies it is less likely.

| Not all first time moms will bond with their pups. I had one who had a singleton pup and had to have a c section. I tried for 2 days to get him to nurse and he wouldn't and mom wouldn't stand for it either. He wouldn't take the bottle either and I finally tubed him thinking mom would come around. She never did so I had to hand raise him. I was glad it was only one pup. I then had mom spayed. |

| Phoebe and boys Hello all. Phoebe is more alert and caring for her babies, but she does not want to leave them. She was vomiting last night and would not even take chicken broth. I fed her some chicken today, and she ate it like she was starving, but later vomited some of it. Is this normal after a c-section and spay? I am concerned about her getting dehydrated and weak. and taking care of 2 puppies. they are nursing well, so my make concern right now is Phoebe, any suggestions what I should offer her? Worried mommy

| Feed her a little, but more frequently. Fix her the Mother's Nature Pudding recipe. If you need the recipe, let me know and I will pass it on. I think they have a copy in the perm. File. Checken broth is okay and even beef broth. Also a little cooked liver, and don't forget cottage cheese! She needs calcium and protein right now. She may be throwing up because she is eating too fast and too rich so fast on her tummy. Also don't forget to keep a check on her temperature. Are you doing this?? If it goes above 102. call the vet. Both of my girls panted for the first two days - but this was due to hormones. But if you have it with fever - call the vet. You will most likely have to hand feed her - yes with your hand or spoon right to her mouth. For water - you might have to bring the dish up to her too. I even had to swish my finger in the water to get my girls to drink. Drinking ins very important - it helps with her milk supply! Also make sure she is not too hot - can also cause her to get dehydrated. Let us know how she is doing - more often. We get worried. T. |

| Phoebe is not herself, I am so worried!! She is vomiting pile and the chicken she ate yesterday. I took her temp and it is between 101.5 and 102.3. She will only drink water. I forced some nutical in her mouth last night, and that did not stay down. I called the vet who did the c-section/spay, and he told me to give her chicken broth and wait 24 hrs. and that if that does not help then she will need t be hospitalized and the babies bottle fed. Naturally his office is closed until Monday, so I would have to take her to the Emercency pet clinic that is open 24 hrs. Her stomach looks swollen to me, but no different from when I picked her up after the surgery. The only way I can get broth down her is to force it with a syringe, but if she just vomits that, then I am back to square one all over again.. What should I do? My gut feeling is to take her to the ER, but my friend wants me to wait and take her to her vet tomarrow. I am so worried.

| Phoebe hospitalized Phoebe could not even keep water down. I went to one urgent care center and they said there was a 2 hour wait and referred me to another local one. The Vet was very concerned because Phoebe was dehydrated and her belly was very extended and swollen, (but she looked the same size as when her vet released her!) she also said that Phoebe was very depressed. She took xrays, and it seems Phoebe has an Ileus, She will be hospitalized with IV fluids, antibiotics and pain meds, if she responds to the treatment, she should be home in a few days, if not she will have to have surgery. I am bottle feeding her boys every two hours. Their weights are 5.25 and 5.35 after their feed. I hope I am feeding them enough because they stop nursing and then I get them to pee and poop. Please keep Phoebe and her babies in your prayers.
