| College Students & Showing? I was wondering if there were any people on YT who were College Students and were also in the dog showing world? Reason I asked is I'm starting to save now for my English Cocker girl (after HS most likely) but I was wondering how some manage College Life vs. Dog Showing or if it was even possible. Depending on where I go to college, I might have a friend who is going to Tom Rose, and would be interested in keeping the pup for me while I'm in school, but that only if I go to college in the area (which is awhile from now and only one possibility). I was just wondering if it was managable to have a successful college life and have 2 doggies (one pet and one show). Thanks so much! - Danielle & Cody! |

| Hi Danielle, It would depend greatly on your finances and who the person is that would be caring for the show dog. ECS's need a lot of grooming. Are they going to do this grooming? Will they train when they have them? It all depends on what would the conditions be, if they are qualified etc. Have you done junior handling? It's possible to have a show dog while you're in school if you can afford to pay for someone else to maintain the show dog and expenses associated with the sport. It would be very very hard and expensive. But if you really want something you can move mountains. |

| I am in my final semester of college. I have managed to take care of 4 yorkies through out my college career. But only because i have a wonderful husband who helps me out. Not only have i been in school full time but i have also had a full time job, until this semester where i am student teaching. My yorkies are just wonderful and get plenty of one on one time. SO yes it can be done, but it depends on many different variables. |

As for the care of the ECS, I'd more than likely be primary caretaker. The grooming I would more than likely have to hire someone to do and then under a mentor, train myself to maintain it. I'm starting to look into Junior Handling (finding mentors, find a dog, etc). The main expenses I guess would be the boarding, year cost of owning any dog, and the show expenses and traveling expenses.

I think if you are determined you can do anything. I know when I went to college (I went back older), I was a mom to two little ones, worked full time as a paraprofessional, and we owned our own store and worked at the store every hour I could if I was not at work or at college. I graduated with honors and was on the Dean's list. Anything is possible and one can do it correctly, if you manage your time wisely.

Now I own my own business at home and can raise my two little kids being at home with them and my dogs and my husband who is also at home freelance We are truly home bodies My passion has always been in dogs/animals of all kinds. I should clarify that my first show dog was not a Clarkwyn or Trivar, but his Grandparents were. However, there were still some being shown in those lines. I am more used to "that" look than what I see 20 years later

| Absolutely you can do both. I have a friend who is a handler and whose granddaughter began handling/showing at about 9....she's now 14, in high school, is a marvelous handler, out handles her grandmother (who by the way has taken several yorkies to the top 10). Last year at the Oklahoma Specialty, the yorkie she was handling took the Best In Specialty title....So, juggling school with handling can be done.

| I work, am in nursing school and show dogs as often as I can. It's possible but it does take commitment. But then again, anything worth while does.

| I am also just starting to learn how to show my puppy and I am a fulltime college student. There is a lot to learn and its very fun. It has cost a great deal of money but its all worth it and once you find the products and utensils that work for your dog it is much better. The most helpful part of showing is that I have had several mentors and lots of help when getting started. With the right resources and help it will make things easier but it can be done. Good luck.
