allergies and blood work Hello, I have a female Yorkie (Chloe) who will be 5 years old in May. She has been experiencing severe breakouts on her her back and has been to our Vet. three times with this. The first visit we were told it was allergies and given a allery shot, allergy medication and an antibiotic Within 3 weeks the bumps were back and very inflamed. We took her back again and at that time she was given another shot and antibiotic. During our third vist we were told that these bumps looked like a reaction to flea bites. We have never ever seen fleas on her but the Dr. wanted to get her started on heart worm and flea medication. At this time he did blood work. My husband got a call from the Dr. that afternoon saying that Chloe's platelet count was very high and asked if she was acting ok. He said that all the other bloodwork came back fine. He also said that the test could have been false. She is going back in a few days to be retested. My question is...what could this mean and also could this high level be due to all of the medication she has been on? I know I will find out soon, but I would love some feedback. She is very healthy, good weight and is always ready to eat! Also, she is breaking out again so I don't think this is fleas. Very worried!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome to YT. Sorry you are having problems with Chloe's health. My Cali has allergies and is on medicine for it. As far as the platlete count being high I don't have an answer but hopefully someone who knows will respond.

Thanks for your reply. I am really concerned about the high platlette count....thought that the two (breaking out and high count) could somehow be related.....or the meds could be causing this high number! Thanks again. Joy and Chloe

my dog has allergies and has for 5 1/2 years i recommend going to a dermatologist as you will save alot of money that way as they get to the bottom of it FAST. Sounds like a staph infection - i really like duoxo chlorhexedine shampoo as an antibacterial - did the vet do a skin culture and send to lab? I would not mess with vet anymore and i would go to dermatologist what meds were given as sounds to me like dexamothesone shot was given which is a steroid not an allergy shot there is no such thing as allergy shots unless doing hyposensitization shot. my dd reacts to all shampoos like malaseb, ketachlor, sebalux but she did not react poorly to the duoxo chlorhexedine and her staph is going away here is the deal with staph is usually 25 days of simplicef will kill it - if you do not do a full 21-25 days of antibiotic the staph will come back with a vengeance 10xs worse. Another reason it can come back is antibiotics kill all good and bad bacteria so if you do not add good back and your dogs system is out of balance then the bad can out weigh the good then come back as well so always important to double up with probiotics while on antibiotics and give 2 hrs afterwards The steroids will suppress the immune system allowing infection to get worse and shots of steroids are much stronger and last longer than pill forms.

i personally think the blood work is a reflection of all those meds sounds like vet is all over the place and not real experienced with skin and allergies to me

here are the dermatologists in kentucky and usually first consult is $160 but at least you will get to the answer the first visit none of this try this try this and the skin culture is appx $134 and it is no biggie they just go over skin with a piece of tape send out to lab and find the antibiotic that will kill it - simplicef is what they usually try but my girl has horrible allergies and got hives on it so we are using clindamyacin and it is killing it. Topically if you want to treat that way do the duoxo i stated every 3 days and that will kill it topically https://www.acvd.org/ this is the place we go to and there is one in kentucky http://www.animaldermatology.com/han...ate&cpid=12716 I do not think it is a flea reaction although on flea bite can do some damage but flea allergy is the back half of the dog so on the butt area not the entire back the other thing to rule out is hypothyroid due to age of your dog as my dog with all the skin issues is hypothyroid and it is also an auto immune disease so this could be why this is creeping up now at 5 so next blood draw do a 6 panel thyroid sent to michigan state, antech or dr jean dodds. What happens with this is they can get sebaceous gland excretion on back which is oily crusties on back and thyroid usually affects the back and tail of a dog although in mine she lost hair on her neck Last edited by dwerten; 01-16-2010 at 02:15 PM.

Thank you so much for all the info. I thought I had sent you a reply but I guess it did not go through. The antibiotic she was on is Deromax. She has had 3 shots and is on meds every other day!!! Her inflamation is coming back already. I think you're right...this could be a staph. I really don't know what a staph infection looks like, but these little bumps get so inflamed.....she itches and bites at herself all the time. Poor baby, her hair is getting so thin. Do you think that if the infection is bad enough, it could raise her platelet count or could it be all of these shots. I just can't figure it out.....I am so worried about this high count. I just hope its not a blood disease! She is going back on Tuesday for more blood work. I hate to switch Vets because she is suppose to have surgery on her knee soon, and the Surgeon is with these Drs. I know they will not do surgery until they figure out what's going on!!!!! Thanks again. Joy and Chloe

First of all......I did give you the wrong med. I don't even know why I stilll have this. Sorry! She was on the pain meds when she had her stage 4 laxating patella surgery and few years ago. Now she needs surgery on her other leg. This Surgeon is an Ortho....just in with this group of Vets. The pic you sent does look like what Chloe has. I don't know why he felt she had flea bites. I am concerned with the meds she is taking and will talk to the Vet about this. If the high count is not caused by the meds, do you have any idea what else it could be? This worries me more than anything at this point. You have been so helpful. Joy and Chloe I am wondering if her shot was given right before the blood work....just now thought of that! Oh man!!!!
