| Royal Cainine: I Think He's Tired Of It Is it possible that dogs can get tired of the same food daily~? Looks like he is with "Royal Canine". He won't eat it, but when I mixed some wet food in with it, he does eat. We humans don't eat the same food daily and we get tired of the same food daily. I do know you need to slowly add new food to old food to adjust them to it. Maybe he's holding out for the treats I have, I don't know. But I have been thru 8+ foods with my Yorkie in the past and thought we have it down pat now. He didn't eat all day, except for a few small treats someone gave him when we were out ( and I gave him one when I left today too). So tonight, I mixed his "Royal Cainine" with some wet food (Purina chicken & rice). He smells the food and walks away, as he did with the other foods we've been thru. Any suggestions are appreciated. |

Several things can be going on. First the food may have gotten stale; you need to take all the air out of the bag before you seal it up. Moisture in the air makes food taste less appetizing. Another thing could be, those treats you give him; they may be just enough food, so he's willing to hold out for yummier fair. Three, he could be getting food without your knowledge; trashcans are a popular choice. Lastly, he may not be feeling well, and his appetite just isn't there. The mistake most people make is they fix the dog something special fearing he's starving to death, and he learns to become fussier. Try giving more nutritious treats, like thawed frozen green beans, a dog loves them, but they won't ruin the appetite for more nutritious food.

| We are going through this again also! I have tried almost everything.. I tried mixing with wet every time if she won't take if normally. I tried parm cheese. That lasted 3 days! Now I am back to square one with a 2 year old girl that wont eat. I am tempted to try and wait it out and see what happens and if she deicdes to just eat when she is ready. But I feel bad at the same time. Charley is on Wellness and she does not really like it. She was on Royal Canine for 1 year (with previous owner) but she won't eat it with us. I still leave it down with the Wellness. I just want her to eat. I have tried holding out of treats also and that does not work for me. She still won't eat. For a while I was wondering if she just wants to eat once a day. But then she cannot get enough in, in that one meal. Catch 22 I guess... I am running out of idea's myself! Good Luck! |

I keep his food in a large plastic container with a lid. I don't give him the amount of treats as I once did. I use to hid numerous of treats in his toys, like a scavenger hunt. Something to do while I am away. It's impossible for him to get into my trash cans, so that can't be it either. He does nibble on grass, which the Vet told me not to let him do. His belly must be upset to do that, as I was told by a friend. I went to "Feeder Supply" today and got some "Merrick's" canned trout mix and some new stuff they have out called: "Visions" which is for their vision, joint and breathe. It is small kibbles you add to their food. Looks like peas, but 1/4 size smaller.

Yorkie Yakker | I had the same problem with Jada, she's on Royal Canin as well. I had to start mixing Ceasar with her dry or she would not eat. Now she will eat every bite Quote:

In other words if you have three or four inches of air, in them even though it "sealed air" the product will still get stale, especially if you live in a humid state. Also remember an adult dog does not need as much food as a puppy. I would go more by his weight and not be concerned unless he was losing weight or too thin. Finally sometimes dogs that aren't' getting enough exercise lose their appetite, so make sure that he's getting some exercise. You can try a new food, I'm only telling you this because sometimes the same thing happens two weeks later, and the new food has gone stale.

Sounds like you have tried everything I can think of, so giving him another brand might be your best option if he's really not eating. Each dog is different, and it so hard to make hard and fast rules that works for all of them. Hope you can find something he enjoys, and doesn't get tired of.

| I've Learned My Lesson No more wet food for my Yorkie I found his stool all over the bathroom floor this morning He does have a pad in there when he can't go outside. I thought I cleaned it all up until now. I found a big ole mess behind a chair in the living room Apparently, Merrick's trout doesn't agree with him. He didn't have much of it either. I've learned my lesson once again. |

| Well I am having the same trouble with my Bella...she want eat. She was eating the frozen raw meat for a while. No problem and now it is force feeding her. I have tried every specialty food at my local pet boutique in North Carolina. I bought a new food today a pet smart...after reading every label. Why do they have to be so picky? Any advice...I read all the other responses she is just 6 months. Am I going to have this problem always. If I could give her cat food she would be fine. Why do they love it so much.

No idea how you'd do that with raw though! In the end, as long as you do offer food I really do not think you need to worry. When your girl gets hungry she'll eat what you put out. She isn't going to starve just because its something she "doesn't like" but she may hold out hopping you might find something she does! (As an aside, I think one of the issues you find with some of the nicer quality foods is they don't use as much fat and the food isn't as "tasty" so sometimes you don't get that OMG I WANT THAT kind of response.)

| I went to the Vet earlier tonight for another issue, and also asked about this eating problem too. She told me that when it is warm out, they don't eat as much. She also told me that if a dog is in heat, they can smell them 5-8 miles away. That can also distract them from eating. I'm feeling better and not worrying. Between treats & his food, he's eating when we play ball. |

| Personally, I think dogs like a little variety in their diet. I would be careful to not overdo it though. When we got Maggie, she was on Royal Canin but stopped eating it shortly after we got her. We have 4 other dogs and she would only eat what they were eating. At the time, we were feeding our adult dogs Chicken Soup. We tried different puppy foods for Maggie, and even switched the adult food to California Natural and still Maggie would only eat the adult dog food. I asked for advice on a good all life stages food and was recommended Nature's Variety Prairie and Innova. We decided to try the Nature's Variety Prairie chicken and brown rice formula and the dogs all love it and Maggie is doing well on it too. We had no issues switching over either. I haven't tried the Innova yet, but plan to try it sometime soon for a little variety. Some of your pet food stores carry sample packages of some of their foods that you can get to try out. I would check it out. It's worth a try. |
