| Advice Needed -Trixie had a tick!! OMG...I was rubbing my Trixie's belly today and notice a strange brown spot.....it was a tick!! I removed it (head intact and all) and it left a red spot on her little white belly. I was so freaked that after I looked at it and saw it was a tick, I squished it and flushed it down the toilet instead of saving it and bringing it to the vet What an idiot!! The spot seems to be healing and isn't as red anymore. My vet's office was closed when this happened so I couldn't call them. Do you think I should bring her in to the vet or am I panicking. The tick was fully removed and was still alive...yuck....so I know I got it all out. Is there anything the vet can do at this point. She isn't on any flea/tick prevention because she isn't outside all that much and I thought that giving her the least amount of chemicals was best, but now I wonder if I made a huge mistake. Give me some advice please.

| I can't tell you if you should use anything or not but you can get fleas many different ways. They can jump something like 150 x their size and hop onto us, humans and we can bring them indoors. I would imagine that we can do the same with ticks if we are walking thru an area where they are. I know I have gotten them on me while gardening. Since you do not want to use chemicals, maybe you can find a natural repellent. I am both using Frontline and just started bathing them with lemon grass oil. So far I haven't seen anything on them and I live in a semi wooded area. But I also have my yard sprayed for ticks and fleas.

| Long Island is a high-risk area for ticks and tick-borne diseases. Although your pup doesn't spend a lot of time outdoors, I would still use a preventative. You don't need to go to the vet for the tick bite. Teddy had a couple of good-sized welts from tick bites this spring and the vet said all we could was wait until they go down, which took 2-3 weeks. He also said that we could swab with a little rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.

| Even with using preventatives, they don't do anything until the fleas or ticks bite the dog. I believe I read that the tick has to be on the dog 12 hours or more to transmit disease. I would mark the date on the calendar just in case you notice any symptoms, then you can tell the vet when the tick was found and removed. If you google 'Ticks' and look at some pics, maybe you can figure out what type it was. So using preventatives may help some, but we also limit outside time during tick season (when they get really plentiful), and comb and brush everyday and check for ticks constantly. I usually put a dab of AB ointment on the tickbite, but they heal fine too without it. The bump will take some time to disappear. I burn any ticks I find.

| As long as the area looks normal and you are sure you got it all, she does not need to be seen. It's too early to run bloods and see if it made her sick. It takes a certain number of hours for a tick to transmit disease, and even without a bite, tick preventatives kill them before that time is up (well, that is the hope anyway). I would be talking to the vet about whether a tick preventaitive is indicated. It probably is.

| Thanks....the area looks much better this morning. I'm going to take her in today to have her nails trimmed and ask them about the flea/tick preventative. I think the one time I spoke to her about it she recommended revolution. Anyone ever use that?

| She would need to stop her current heartworm preventative if you use Revolution. Some love it, some hate it over concerns of lack of effectiveness. I think there are better choices, but that is JMO.

| Jackson has probably had 20 different ticks on him throughout the past 2yrs. Frontline did not work for us in the summer, and he did get lymes disease. But I had picked multiple ticks off him that summer. He tested negative for lymes this year (put him on a round of antibiotics after being diagnosed). Ticks are an unfortunate part of life around here, lol. They are everywhere.

| I was told by my vet that once bitten it takes about 24 hours for any disease to transmit to the dog. |

| Shortly after we got Douglas (1 1/2 wks later) I found tick a little under his pad of his front foot. It was a lone star tick and was buried almost up to the white dot. I was scared to remove it so I called and they said a vet tech could remove it. I had also notice a decrease in feedings. The tech removed it but could not get the head out, she cleaned it up and send me out...when checking out (it was free!) she said "wait i want the vet to check him out) so we stayed another 45 minutes while the vet tried to get the head out. they where concerned about the amount of swelling, we don't know how long the tick was there. They put Douglas on antibiotic just in case as they where concerned about the amount of swelling! Everything turned out OK but that is our story. Here is a picture of his tick.

| We use Revolution as Frontline makes my dog sick and very itchy. We've not had any problems with fleas or ticks but I live in Ohio, and just walk my dog around the neighborhood once a day, no wooded areas or the like. Most people get their yards sprayed for bugs around here so that may be why we've not had a problem with fleas and ticks. Good luck to you both! I'm sure your baby will be fine, especially since you said the red area looks better today. I would mark it on the calendar and watch for a ring around the bite area and for odd symptoms. HUGS!
