Even with using preventatives, they don't do anything until the fleas or ticks bite the dog.
I believe I read that the tick has to be on the dog 12 hours or more to transmit disease. I would mark the date on the calendar just in case you notice any symptoms, then you can tell the vet when the tick was found and removed. If you google 'Ticks' and look at some pics, maybe you can figure out what type it was.
So using preventatives may help some, but we also limit outside time during tick season (when they get really plentiful), and comb and brush everyday and check for ticks constantly.
I usually put a dab of AB ointment on the tickbite, but they heal fine too without it. The bump will take some time to disappear.
I burn any ticks I find.
