Long Island is a high-risk area for ticks and tick-borne diseases. Although your pup doesn't spend a lot of time outdoors, I would still use a preventative.
You don't need to go to the vet for the tick bite. Teddy had a couple of good-sized welts from tick bites this spring and the vet said all we could was wait until they go down, which took 2-3 weeks. He also said that we could swab with a little rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.
