| eeeek kennel cough!? I am new to the boards, as well as to being a yorkie mommy! I got my precious Oliver eight days ago and he is 12 weeks old today. Welllll...two days ago, he started making this strange noise. I thought it was a sneeze at first, but my husband pointed out that he was coughing and had a hairball or something. Well, this morning Oliver just kept coughing and coughing from 3-4am. My husband and I were both awoken from it, and we tried to get him to cough whatever was in his throat up. After googling and getting on here, are well as watching youtube videos, we discovered that it was most definitely kennel cough! And it's the 4th of July weekend so the vets are closed and we don't have money til next Thursday, and we don't have credit cards either! Help! I need some home remedies til we can get to a vet! My poor baby. |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new puppy! He really should be seen be the vet, he may need to go on antibiotics. I would suggest trying to borrow from friends or family... or you can apply online for Care Credit at: CareCredit Veterinary Financing for Pet Care, Pet Surgery, Vaccinations & Other Veterinary Medicine Procedures They can approve you within seconds, and help you find a vet that accepts Care Credit as a payment. Some don't, so call to check before you head out.

| There aren't any home remedies for kennel cough. He needs to be seen by a vet and get antibiotics. Untreated, kennel cough can turn into pneumonia and become much more serious and expensive. Since you are in Chicago, there must be an ER vet open this weekend. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry your baby is sick. He does need to go in. Have you contacted the breeder or the place you got him from? Maybe they can help. I live in the Chicago area an d a ER visit by me is 90.00 and then they will probably give him an antibiotic. It should run about 125.00. Do you have a regular vet? If so do they have an emergency contact number? If you need help finding an ER vet let me know.

| He does need to go to the vet- just to be sure a) it is not pneumonia b) it does not develop into pneumonia. Otherwise there is very little you can do for the actual cough. When Layla had it I used a warm air humidifier and it really worked. Hang in there- it can take months for the cough to go away. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | you really need to take him to the ER so he can be checked out. If kennel cough isn't treated early on in puppies it can lead to pneumonia and then death. i've seen it happen, and its very sad. Did you get him from a pet store? i'd hate to think that a breeder would have kennel cough in their home. If you take him to the vet and its confirmed that he has kennel cough then the vet can write an unfit for sale letter saying that the puppy was unfit for sale at the time you purchased him because he was sick (or incubating) with kennel cough. You can then give this letter to the pet store (or broker or breeder) to demand a refund or money for the vet bills up to the purchase price of the puppy. Also, honestly, if you just purchased a puppy and you have no money for his care maybe you should think about returning (if you can) or rehoming him. Dogs cost a lot of money to care for, especially in their first year of life. i just find it hard to believe that you spent money to purchase a puppy but now don't have any money to care for him. I am sorry the pup is sick and i hope you are able to take him to the vet as soon as possible

| Thanks everyone! He has spent the whole day sleeping...we're hoping that rest will help! I am actually currently living two hours outside of Chicago and moving back to Chicago in the fall, and there aren't any open vets in the area due to the holiday weekend! ARGH! I found one that is open on Monday, and if things get worse tomorrow, we're going to drive an hour to an ER vet. We're saying some prayers. Oh, and as far as paying for him goes, it's just this paycheck that we're running behind since we had to pay for him completely upfront and pay off the rest of the wedding...but now we are DEBT FREE! YAY! We get paid on Thursday, so things will start to head up from here. We just definitely didn't expect Oliver to get sick so quickly! Poor baby! We called the breeder, and although there were 8 puppies in Oliver's litter, Oliver is the only one to get sick, so I'm quite curious as to how this is possible- nothing has changed in his diet or at home either, and he hasn't been around other dogs since we got him, so I'm getting a little bit skeptical of this breeder. At first I thought it was just allergies, but now we now it's definitely not. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | did you get a health guarantee from the breeder? Kennel cough has an incubation period of 7-10 days from the dog contracting it and then showing symptoms. If you've only had him 8 days he had to have gotten it from the breeder, especially if he's been no where else but your home and hasn't been around other dogs since he left the breeders house. I'd definitely go to your regular vet as soon as they open to get him checked out to confirm kennel cough. if the vet says that's what it is then you should get the unfit for sale letter to give to the breeder. Illinois has a puppy lemon law i believe and the breeder should be held responsible for the bills of treatment if the vet states your pup was sick when you got him

| We have a one year congenital guarantee...do you think that would include something like kennel cough? I'll definitely have to look that law up. We're planning on going in first thing on Monday to get him checked out. |

does it say anything else about the pups health in the contract/guarantee? kennel cough isn't congenital. having the vet determine if she has kennel cough and when she got it is your best bet. Due to puppy lemon law, if she sold a pet that was sick she should be responsible for its bills i believe.

I looked up the Illinois pet laws and they only cover pet shops and dog dealers. Private breeders seem to be exempt, although new, tougher legislation has been proposed: "Dog dealer" means any person who sells, offers to sell, exchange, or offers for adoption with or without charge or donation dogs in this State. However, a person who sells only dogs that he has produced and raised shall not be considered a dog dealer under this Act. 225*ILCS*605/**Animal Welfare Act.. Did you read your health guarantee? Many require you to take the puppy to your vet within the first 48 hours or the contract is void. Did you get him checked out when you first got him? | |

| My little yorkie puppy had kennel cough when I bought her also. Thankfully, I noticed while I was there. ALL of her vet bills have been taken care of, including treating my other puppy (pomeranian). It took "Princess" 6-7 weeks to get over Kennel Cough. And had to take her to the vet 1-2 times a week. She was on 4 rounds or antibiotics until we found one that kicked it out of her. Including two cough medicines. One for daytime, one for night time so she could sleep without the bad coughing episodes. I know it is very important that they are seen right away for Kennel cough so that it does not develop into something much worse. I also used a small cool mist vaporizer on her. And we also would put Princess in the bathroom with us when we took our showers each day. The humidity/mist helps with breaking up the mucous in the chest and calms down the coughing also. If Princess did not show signs of improvement, they would keep her at the vet for nebulizer treatments. These also can be done at home if you have the proper instructions and "equipment" to do this. My little one is now fully recovered from this. But it was a rough 6-7 weeks for her and for us. Thankfully, I am home 24/7 and gave her constant care. For the first week, she slept in my arms and my daughters so that we could keep a close watch on her. Princess really had kennel cough very bad. I worried about losing her. I will be praying for your little one. Please update us on your little ones vet visit today. I think most vets will also work with you, on payment. Even if you have to leave a post dated check to cover her vet bill. I am fortunate that one of our vets will bill us. But, one of the vets is also was our neighbor and friend. We have been going to this vet office for about 7 years. Not sure about what our other vet office would do in regards to working with us for payment. I like having 2 vets now, so if one vet can't see our dogs, cats or bunnies right away the 2nd vet will as a walk in 7 days a week. And believe me, we have needed this when Princess was so sick with kennel cough. She has not even seen our regular vet yet. But will be soon. |
