Teeth Official Weight Loss Club Thread

Hey, all!! I have been communicating with quite a few of you about the fact that I lost 30 pounds, and would love to help anyone else do the same. I thought that it would be great if the YT people that decided losing weight was a New Years Resolution had their very own thread to go and share their successes, ask questions, and support each other, much as we do with our pups!

What I am talking about, though, is a life change in your diet. This is not something that you can do and then go off it. It is a lifelong committment to eating well. Here's my story:

In 2003 my hubby discovered he had coronary artery disease, had to have a emergency stent, and the doc told us he was about 20 minutes from a killer heart attack before coming to the hospital. Geez. One of the recommendations for his recovery was diet changes. Go as low fat/fat free as possible.

So we learned to read lables on EVERYTHING, and we get as low saturated fat and no transfats as we can get. We eat a lot of chicken, fish, lean pork, and no beef. We eat soy products, veggie burgers, sausage, etc. And LOADS of veggies and fruit. Diet drinks and water only. We actually eat like PIGGIES, but between the two of us we have lost 60 pounds! I went from a size 14 to a SIX at 50 years old! And it doesn't feel like a diet anymore, it's a life change/choice. I am loving it as it is now effortless. And girl, I am HOT, lolol. At this matronly age, I was sure I would be PLUMP (150) forever! No more! 117-120 max is where I have been for the past year and a half, and I am LOVING it!!

The book that Dave got from his surgeon is what got us started. It's called "The Other Diabetes; Eating Well and Living With Type 2 Diabetes" by Elizabeth Hiser. It's not just for diabetics, which we aren't, but it gives you a lot of info about eating well and keeping healthy.

You can take any recipe and convert it to low fat. Stay completely away from deep fat fried foods. You can fry anything in your oven by spraying it with non-fat cooking spray, and baking or broiling. If you bake, use applesauce in place of the fats. Get egg beaters instead of eggs, Smart Beat buttery spread, fat free cottage cheese, fat free sour cream, low fat frozen yogurt, etc., you get the picture. Try to keep your food as low sodium as you can, too.

I use two great cookbooks: The Everything Low Fat/High Flavor cookbook by Lisa Shaw, and the American Heart Association Cookbook. Interestingly, I still have to convert some of the Heart Assoc. recipes because they still use some items I don't.

Listen, I would LOVE for you to try doing this, and so would your doctor! It's not a QUICK loss program, though. It took my body about a year to realize that if it wanted fat it had to use the stored fat it had, and then the weight just fell off me. I eat soooo much, but still maintain less than 120 pounds on me. It's just that I eat the right kind of food!

OK, off my soapbox now. But you would be surprised how changing your eating habits makes you FEEL, too. It's not just weight loss, it's the energy level. It's amazing.

GOOD LUCK!! If you decide to try this, I will give you 100% moral support and any advice you want. Ask me anything! And of course anyone else who wants to contribute input and support is welcome!

Keep in touch right here on our very own thread, and let me know how you do!

Teeth I am STILL hungry!!

LOL, welcome, my friend, and I am honored that you have joined the club!

First I want to say thank you for the lovely compliments! And secondly, I am STILL always hungry! But I eat when I am! I keep loads of fruit in the house, dried and fresh, and if I am starving during the day, that's what I eat. Nothing like an apple cut up with cinnamon and heated for one minute in the microwave! I know many folks who cut up carrots and celery ahead of time and grab those with some fat-free ranch dressing, and snack away! Hummus is also a great snack, and I found some fat free ginger-rice crackers at Food Lion that ROCK! Or fat free cottage cheese with some canned pineapple chunks! Or fat-free yogurt!

There are plenty of healthy things that can be great snacks. Just watch your fat intake, and try to watch the calories too. But if you are eating right, the calories you take in will be good ones.

And don't forget to exercise! Walking is an awesome excercise for losing weight! And don't we all have dogs that would just LOVE that??

HUGS!! I'm here for ya, hon!

See I think that was my problem this year - I was counting CARROT CAKE as my Veggie serving

guess I better keep the carrots and drop the Cake part ? and does this mean I got to quit using the treadmill as a Clothes hanger ?

Thats ironic, I had the same way of counting LOL

Count me in girls, I need to loose 40 also and then a double walk in closet full of clothes could replace the 2 pair of jeans that fit not to mention looks and health issues.

Happy new Year and lets get SLIM in 2006 or at least on track to get slim. We know it takes more than just wishes and a couple months. I have put it on slowly over the past 5 years so I hope I can reverse it in 1.

I need support and someone to be accountable to. Maybe you can keep me honest in the counting.

What women don't realize is after turning a certain age and when you start going through menopause you instantly gain 20 pounds. I am a vegetarian, but tend to be stuck on starches such as breads and pasta. Glad if you have any suggestions for past that would be great, because I love pasta! I am also a diabetic, have been since age 5. I've had no serious health issues, but I owe all that to God! He has been so wonderful to me. I do realize that God is expecting me to do my part. Besides eating a vegetarian life, I also juice. I have an awesome juicer and I juice carrots usually twice a day.

I am excited about being a member here and looking forward to sharing my success stories!

Thanks Glad!

I also have blossomed this past year. I am also 47 and I weigh 156, Ouch!! (but I am 5'8") LOL I have gained at least 20lbs in the last 2 years.. I also have a closet full of clothes that are either too tight or don't fit at all.. For the first time inmy life I have that wonderful fat that hangs over my waist of my pants, and its nasty!! (and yes I have gone through menopause)My husband and I are also planning on losing some weight. Before I hit my forties I use to weigh in around 128-135, I would love to see those days again. First the weight than the flab!!
Good Luck everyone!!

We should check in once a week to give our reports?? What do you think?

Teeth WOW! Everyone, WELCOME!!

Welcome, LadyT,TroubleTB,and HasRV4Fun! I think this is going to be so wonderful being there with you when you accomplish your goal of feeling better and getting fit!

I agree, as soon as the years started piling up, so did the pounds. However, I am just now going through menopause, and due to how I have been eating, the pounds are dropping OFF, not piling on! Hooray!

Villette, I know I don't have to tell you that carrot cake is not a veggie, lol!! However, you CAN have carrot cake if you make it yourself and use Splenda and applesauce instead of all the sugar and fat!! I have a great recipe for Carrot Cake out of the American Heart Assoc. cookbook, and if anyone wants it, PM me and I will email it to you!

LadyT, you can STILL have your bread and pasta! Have you tried whole grain breads and pastas? They have a nutty yummy flavor that is mmmmmm good! As far as your toppings for both go, try non-fat or low-fat spreads for your bread, marinara sauce instead of cheese sauce on your pasta, and be careful about your portion size. I eat just a little pasta and load on sauteed veggies: peppers, onions, and black olives on my pasta. I also use Bocca Italian sausage made from soy. You can find them in the grocersfrozen section. I also use low fat parmesan cheese. You see? It's all tied in! I even make garlic bread with Smart Balance squeeze buttery spread, making sure my bread has no saturated fats and NEVER any transfats!! Those fats are AWFUL... more about that soon.

TroubleTB & HasRV4Fun, I had two closets full of gorgeous size 14 clothes, as I thought that would be the size I would be for life; it's what I was for 7 years. I was a branch manager of a bank, and dressed the part. When I lost all this weight, I gave most of them to Goodwill (and listed them for my hub so we get a considerable tax write off as well) and the ones I could not bear to part with I had altered.

TroubleTB, I loved how you said you have "blossomed"!! lol too cute! Yes, I think once a week if we are comfortable would be a great report time. I would also love to keep a spread sheet (so to speak ) of our progress! If you would like to participate in that, please PM me with your current weight, your goal weight, your height, and age.

This is NOT a race to see who is "The Biggest Loser". This is a lifestyle change that will be with you for the rest of your life. It's all about choices. YOU CAN DO THIS. You will feel better, live healthier, exercise, and be HAPPY about your accomplishment when you lose your weight! You will be proud and you will have more self confidence, and you will be confident in your body again. Aren't you excited?? I know I am!!!

I am here for YOU!

I am joining this club but I have some health issues that actually have made me put on over 75 lbs in the past 4 years or so. I don't know how much I will lose, if any but want to eat healthy and exercise when I can.
Thank you so much for this post!!

This is not a diet. You don't need to be hungry, really! You can eat, but you just need to eat healthy.

As you reach for something to munch, think about your choice. Pick it up, look at the label and see what it is exactly that you are about to put it in your mouth. Ask yourself, "Should I"? And if the answer is no, switch to something ELSE! If you need suggestions for the ELSE, let me know! I AM HERE!!

Oh my I am tooooo excited!! My hubby just said, "Isn't this a DOGGY site?" lolol

Beginning stats:
Age- 28 on Jan. 22, 2006
Weight- 167 (i weighed 134 5 years ago wore a size 6 and thought i was ok but would have liked to have been 10 lbs. less)
Height- 5' 5"

My goal 125 lbs. or size 4 whichever comes first. So I can have a baby and be healthy for me and the baby!
