| Matted Hair Hi, Preston's hair is SUPER matted and I can't seem to brush it out because he crys a lot! I keep him in a cashmere sweater because it's very cold right now so I'm thinking maybe that is causing the matting. He's only 4 months old... Will keeping the sweater on him affect how his hair is going to grow? How do I get out the matting? Help! I don't want to hurt him when I brush him... |

| I wanted my Dori to wear cute sweaters too, but I noticed that the ones that are "knitted" rather than a "stiffer cotton" make her matt like crazy!!! So she doesn't wear tight knit anymore. Dori mats on her chest. They are very hard to get out and I have to get them out as soon as I notice one starting because if I just leave it they will get really bad. I have a habit of constantly rubbing her chest now to see if any are forming. To get them out you have to spray them with some kind of conditioner. I use Chris Christensen's Ice on Ice leave in detangler/conditioner that quite a few people on YT use. Spray the mat and try to work it out some with your fingers. Then I use a comb and start at the base close to their skin and work the mat out. It takes a little time and you have to be gentle but just keep working at it!! Good luck! |

| Unfortunately my Pippa too is a matter! I groom her daily and bathe every 1 - 2 weeks, i keep her collar off unless we go out walkies as this too aids matting. I have found clothes made of fleece doesnt make her hair matt.

| Two other good products are Cowboy Magic Detangler and also LaserLites Matless. If you line the sweaters with satin it will prevent the matting |

| I tell my 10 year old daughter to brush her hair every morning... its a fight! and then I have to get on her to brush it before bed.... its just past her shoulders... if she skips a brushing she pays for it the next day with tangles that hurt soooo bad! Not matts, but the start of what could be! I do the same with Pixie! I brush every inch of her in the morning and then right before bed. I keep a pin brush on the arm of the sofa, and its our 3 minutes of fluff, it really is that quick. and sometimes faster than that. I have rushed and skipped it, and like my poor Katelyn, Pixie pays for it later.... Its just like you brushing your hair or teeth.... You do it every day.... I hope. So should they. They don't shed, they have HAIR like us. It needs to be taken care of like ours. A good detangler and some extra love will get you outta hot water and good habits will keep you both happy.

| If You Can't The Matts Out... You may to have shave him. I'm a groomer and some sweaters are notorious for matting hair. If he is badly matted all over it might be best for him. Some groomers including myself refuse to brush out badly matted hair. It's just Torture to the dogs and they are likely to recieve Brush Burns. He will survive with short hair. And be sure to take his sweaters off daily and brush him when it grows out again. I hope this Helped, Good Luck.

| Hi! I had a similar problem as yours. My baby was matted all over her chest and on the underside of her hind legs. I just got back from the groomers... since there was nothing wrong with her hair on top and on her face I requested them to leave it so I can continue to grow it out. If you prefer the long coat you can always have the underside and insides of her legs shaved while growing everything else out. This preserves the look of the long coat but it makes it easier to manage their hair; mats seem to form on the armpit/leg and chest area the most anyhow! Oh, and brush at least daily! |

| When a dog is matted that bad, the only thing that can be done is too have them shaved. Your puppy might have a soft coat and if she does, it will matt all the time, if not brushed everday. My Bell who is 3 now. Went swimming in our pond last week when I was in bed recooperating from my gall bladder removal. If I had known about it right after it happened I would have been able to give her a bath and removed all her small matts. Since I didn't really notice her condition until 3 days later, I had to shave her almost completly! She now looks like a lion, as her hair on her body is about 1/2 inch and then she still has her hair on her head!! Good luck what ever you decide to do!

| I think clothes do cause additional matting. My only advise would to keep your little puppy in a very very short cut while he is little. This way he won't need to experience so much hurtful combing and brushing. My pup died and cried and whinned whenever I went near him with a comb. I really felt that any attempt to comb him much (while he was so young) would just make him worse (this is why I cut him very short). My pup's new hair is totally wonderful - and never matts (clothes or not). He is 6 months old with a wonderful new coat that is totally different and much more manageable than his puppy coat was. Hope this happens for you! Carol Jean |

| My girl has very long hair. She hardly ever mats unless I put a sweater on her. I found the solution for her is to buy her clothes that wrap around her body. The type with velcro. It helps alot. Kate

Satin is good for preventing matts but if they're as bad as you say....I would give him a nice short cut and keep brushing to prevent future mats....When they are puppies it seems they can mat easily.....Good luck ! | |
