| Pet Insurance I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread about pet insurance and get everyone's opinions. I didn't see a post like this recently (if there is, I apologize), but I thought it could be informative. What company do you use/recommend? What sort of coverage do you feel is necessary? Do you use add-ones such as wellness and dental? What do you pay monthly (if you feel comfortable sharing that info)? Anything else's you feel could be helpful in helping a new pet owner choose pet insurance? I've always had pet insurance on my pets, but I've only fostered for quite some time, so I am hoping some of your replies will help me in my research for Sheldon's insurance. |

| There are tons of existing threads about it if you search here. I have embrace and like it.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...rifaj-dvm.html In our library we have quite a few informative articles. There are quite a few threads here on Insurance. I have Trupanion Breeders Insurance. As this is the only company that actually offers Breeders Insurance, plus they do cover genetic defects I went with them. I do not have coverage for dental, or a wellness plan. But I do have riders that provide for certain state of the art treatments and also rehabilitative care. I do think it is important to get insurance when your puppy is young and has not been diagnosed with a pre-existing condition (yet). I think that it is worthwhile to get one that covers genetic defects. Surgery for LP and Liver Shunt is very expensive, and if your pup does suffer from either one or both, that insurance will pay for itself very quickly.

| Trupanion! I just selected that I wanted coverage on everything they offered and it's $50/month. Luckily my vet gave me trupanion insurance for a month free to try it out and I ended up needing it the 3rd day I had MJ ($200 X-rays). The downside? You pay upfront and they reimburse you later. Broken dog leg? Better have $4,000 in the bank. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | We usually have about 2 threads+ per week about insurance. I used to have PetPlan and now have Healthy Paws. I like the way HP does their deductibles vs some other companies.

| I'm looking at Embrace or Healthy Paws right now. I'm a bit confused about getting a quote from HP though...they don't have Biewer in their breed list so I'm not sure what to choose...Yorkie? Or should I contact customer service and see what that say? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm...I'd probably use Yorkie for the online quote, but maybe call if/when you decide to go w/ HP, just to be sure you're using the right breed. I've had good customer service from them, btw.

| Ended up going with Embrace because of their Wellness packages. Not too bad. Hopefully I won't need to use anything but the wellness, but it is nice to know the protection will be there. Thanks for all your help |

| This is what I have. They are very fast to pay back wellness. Claims have ranged but they are pretty quick. I like the company so far.

| Glad to hear it. I hope we like it. I am going to talk to my vet about performing the ortho physical so the six month wait on ortho can be waived...do you have an opinion on this? |

I did the ortho waiver on my boys. I knew they would have pre-existing conditions because they were adults and had medical histories already. Once you send it in, they tell you that they have waived the time period and what will be covered. So in my case, they told me that they were permanently excluding Winston's luxating patella and osteoarthritis of the knees. They cleared all his other joints in his spine, skull, shoulders, etc. Winston has a grade 1-2 luxating patella so it is unlikely he will ever need treatment for that down the road, but even if he does, there are so many other issues that would be covered now that he is insured. He has no other pre-existing conditions. I'm not sure if I would wait out the 6 months in a puppy. With my luck, we would break a leg.

All they have to do is examine him. They do not require xrays or anything. So they just have to do the check offs that he is normal for his age/breed. It's a tougher call in a brand new puppy because if you do the exam they might find something. I was pretty sure they would not find anything wrong with Winston but Teddy - well - you never know with him (he has 5 genetic diseases and other medical issues). I wish I was as smart as you to get it while he was a puppy.

I love that you say smart. My husband says "paranoid"...lol. Our first owned dog (not counting fosters) was an American Pit that we had from birth. Super healthy, not a thing wrong until ten years old. Then she got a recurring throat tumor and had $15,000+ in surgery the last two years of her life. Never again. Since then, any pet we've owned has been insured. Fosters we didn't need, so it had been a while since I had to do this insurance thing. Lol. | |
