| will she ever learn not to run? My new baby, I love her so. Everything is going wonderful, potty training, learning tricks, being a good girl and learning to be a wonderful member of our family. We have never had a yorkie before and now the first time an animal in the house. One concern is we played with her and chased her in the living room which she loved. She would run like mad around all the obstacles, barking and having fun. Then we realized what we had done! We have stopped all that. She still runs from us wanting to play. I am so concerned what if she gets out of the house by accident or off leash. She will be gone like the wind. She has learned so many tricks but does not come when called very well. What can we do to insure she will come when called, it may mean her life. I'm sure some of you have had this problem. Some help would be greatly appreciated. She is 4 mos. old. Will she get better with age? Thanks |

| Teach your dog "down" and "come" and work on recall. At the same time, Yorkie proof your home. My boys were trained to stay at the door, but one day, Teddy broke and shot out the garage to chase the UPS truck down the street. We put up baby gates to keep the boys from the doors. My boys also got into the backyard when I had the gate open. In both instances, the boys listened to my command to either come or stop and go down. Train, but do everything possible to prevent your pup from getting out of the house off leash.

| Work on teaching her to come like you would other tricks. I am a big fan of puppy class. One of the things I did to practice on getting her to come was me and my grandma went outside, I gave my grandma the end of the very long leash and Callie was hooked on the leash. First i started close to Callie and say Callie come moving my hand toward me as I said it and when she would come I would give her a treat. Then I would back up and do it again and just kept doing that.

| 1. If she gets away from you before you have taught her recall, TRY RUNNING FROM HER see if she chases you. You can also clap your hands, squat down and pretend that you have found a goodie in the grass, like you are digging, this may make her come to check it out. 2. Make Teaching her to come must be your number one priority ! Choose a area free of distractions. I use a long hall. Put a leash on her halter. Yorkies have fragile necks so don't use a collar and leash. Use really good, tiny rice sized treats ( I use real boiled chicken) Sit on floor and say in a happy voice Name of Dog -- Come. If they don't start to come give a tiny tug on the leash. You may have to gently pull them to you at first. As soon as they touch your hand give them a treat and praise GOOD COME ! in your happy voice. It is important for them to touch your hand. Because many dogs want to grab the treat and dash away or stay just out of reach. Also by touching your hand, you can lightly hold them by the halter and also teach them sit at a later lesson. NEVER CALL YOUR PUPPY TO YOU TO PUNISH OR SCOLD HIM.Coming should always be rewarded (later by pets and praise will be enough). Perfect recall just takes practice. Hope this helps. | I forgot don't keep repeating the COME command. Say it once. Then gentle tug if you have to. Say Good Come when she does come. Try to only give the Come command, when you can enforce it. Until she is trained, she should be told to come, only when you can make her come. That way she never learns to ignore the command, because something else has her interest ! My dogs will stop in mid squirrel chase and come, because it is such a habit. |

| When I took SophieKate to her puppy classes one of the first things they taught us was the command "come" and "wait". "Come" is exactly that, you say their name and come and they will come right to you (it works). As mentioned before they told us to only say come once and expect the dog to follow the command. The "Wait" command was a little more difficult to teach because the way my trainer taught it was wait can mean many things but it should always mean that you go first and the dog waits until you say "come". Example when the door is open you go out first and your dog waits until you say "come". One suggestion I would make is always make sure your dog is wearing a collar with tags. As you probably have read you shouldn't walk your dog with the leash attached to the collar (use a harness) but I always keep the collar on along with the harness. This is a just a preventative if your baby ever slips out the door. Get a lot of training treats and start working with your baby, you will find it rewarding and valuable in the future. Good luck .

| Definitely work with your dog, as others have suggested, on "come", "wait" and "sit" and "stay". You can tell your dog to "sit" and "stay" when she runs. During our training class, our instructor told us to use a phrase for "come" other than come. This is because come is overused. Such as come here, come on. Her word was "front". It's up to you what you want to use. Also as someone said, make it a fun thing when she does come. Praise her lots or treat her. I don't carry treats on our walks, but I sure give praise and stroke them down when they come over to me when called. And yes, a lot of times, when you go away from them, they will tend to follow you. Not 100% of the time but most of the time. Try teach them this as well.

| One of the best ways to teach your dog to respond to the come command is to first teach sit and stay. Put your dog in a sit/stay.....with a small rope attached that is at least 6' long, walk away and say "come." Of course if she responds correctly she gets big rewards. If she will not come gently pull on the rope or leash until she is with you. Big reward anyway. Always use happy encouraging voice. Never call your dog to correct it. dogstardaily.com has some good training videos available and some really good tips on dog training. Sit, stay, and come can be life saving commands in an emergency. I never trust my dog off lead, however. |
