| potty training woes hi everyone, my baby now goes to the potty pad solely but the only thing is, he is confines to the bathroom, and i have been taking him outside every hour and he goes outside everytime, but when he goes outside i let him run around for a littel bit inside the house and he always goes somewhere in the house? do you guys think he knows to go outside since we say outside lets go, and he jumps and lets us put his collar on, does he know to go outside or how do i train him to keep going outsdie only? and when hes in the bathroom he goes on the potty pad only, so i thought i would increase slowly so i took the gate off the bathroom door, and let him roam my room only with the potty pad still in the bathroom, thinking he will go back int he bathroom to go on the potty pad but he goes in the floor, so i have to put him back int he bathroom, and i dont like that, he looks so lonely he doesnt cry but what can i do now?

I know how you feel!!!!!!!!! I just got a 4 month old Yorkie or shall I say my new son "Chico" last Friday as a xmas gift to my daughter. I honestly didn't think it would be this hard to potty train. I am just sooooo confused from the breeder telling me to use puppy pads or litter. Then I have friends that are dog owners who tell me to just take him outside or get a diaper. This is like have a new baby because I'm already sleepy from just the past week of him adapting to my schedule and me to his. I made the mistake of letting him have the house and he made poop after poop on the floor. So the breeder told me to confine him to one small space and it seems to be working alot better that I thought w/ the puppy pads. I just didn't like seeing him in such a small space and/or kennel because he looks like he's in jail. He cried for a while the first day but he seems to be over it now. As long as he can see us from his space he has been fine. This is my first puppy and I'll be so glad when this is potty training is over. If anyone has any quick tips please let me know. I would really like for him to be potty trained for outside but I think I should wait until he's older. I guess I have a long potty training road ahead of me. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

| thats exactly my story. i got him when he was four months, and the breeder told me he was house trained but he may have accidents since its a new house, yeah he was no where near trained he didnt even want to go outside, and at first he wouldnt pee outside but after nights of freezing he started going outside, and he goes outside everytime now, but when he does have to go he doesnt give me no hint, i take him out evey hour every half hour and when he goes outside and pees or poos i let him come in and play for about 10 mins, but sure enough he hops down runs off and pees somehwereh when i just took him outside, si mine to is confines and i hate it, how long doea he have to be in there, but i did to make the mistake of giving him the whole house and man he peed and pooped every where he could, and still does when he out thats why i was wondering if he even knows he going out side. my aunts poodles used to howl and bark and wait in front of the door to go outside, but he doesnt, now in the kitchen when hes confines in there he wont go at all in there, even with pee pee pads in there, he waits to go outside, so i dont know, im taking him to be groomes tonight

Yep, I think we all belong to the same potty-training club!!! LOL Tink is a little rascal about pottying. Poo always goes on the pad, but potty - well that just comes out when it feels like it, wherever she happens to be. I chase her around and keep a pad in my pocket and enzyme spray on the counter, but she's gonna train when she's good and ready. She knows if she poos on the pad she gets a treat - so listen to this - she poos a little bit and runs to the treat jar. When I give her a treat, she runs back to the pad and poos some more and runs to the treat har again. Little rascal!!!!!

When I trained my chelsea, she is 3 month old. I am lucky that she gets it after 4 weeks. I basically associate outside for potty or pee. So I take her outside to potty or pee if she did that I will give her treat and let her play inside the house for a while. If she did not potty or pee I put her back in the crate for 5 minutes and try again. Eventually she knows, door open, outside ...potty/pee time. I think the crate training also help her to learn how to hold. I crate her 1-2 hours , follow by potty or pee time outside and play inside. I did not even use pee pad or xpen. I did this "religiously" and very consistent. I also would not let her play outdoor even if she pees or potty. After pees or potty outside I took her back immediately. If I can't watch her inside the house I put her back in the crate. Eventually I add the playtime and reduce the crate time. She is now 6 months and have the entire house to play. She sleeps in her bed at night and can hold for almost 9 hours at night. BTW if she had an accident indoor, I took the potty and put it outside where I want her to pee or potty. Let her see and sniff. I hope this help. There are many methods but this one works for me.

Just be consistent and eventaully it will pay off. My Peanut is 13 weeks old and uses the pee pad about 95% of the time. But, he doesn't go outside. I have put the pad in a litter box and he knows that this is where he sould go. If we are outside on a walk, playing, etc. sometimes he will go outside. Just make sure you use lots of rewards and love, and your baby will be just fine!

If you have to leave him for more than 2 hours or so, I wouldn't leave him in the kennel..his bladder is still too small and he might have accidents. I put peanuts kennel, potty pad, food and water bowl in my bathroom and so far so good...he always uses the pad! If I leave for a short time, yes he goes in his kennel. Hope this helps...I know how you feel, being a yorkie owner for only 2 months, but you'll learn a lot here!

Lillybelle was a year old before she was 100% potty trained to go outside. I did use the pee pads for occasions if we were gone for a few hours, but she would use those about half the time. People would always ask me "ARENT THEY HARD TO POTTY TRAIN? They just have tiny bladders, and you must be very very patient-and some just take a long time to learn to be consistant 100% of the time.

Chelsea was in the kennel during training her training day. She loves her kennel and associated the kennel time as treat time too. She is there the most for 2 hours and i have a lot of toy for her (I rotate the toy). When she is outside she does not play with her toy but play with me The other thing that I forget to mentioned is that I schedule her meal time at the same time everyday (6.30; 12.00; 18.00PM). That also helps since I now she will potty at the approximate same time everyday (in the morning, 2 hours after breakfast or 30 minutes after lunch and 30 minutes after dinner and sometimes before she goes to bed). This makes it easy for me since I know everytime I let her out to pee during that time I have to wait for her to potty. Like I said there are many methods but this works the best for me. Consistent and it will pay off. I have no luck using pee pad and even now I try to pee pad train her outside with no luck. I am thinking to do this to associate the pad as second option if we are away but I really have no luck with the pee pad. Out of curiosity what kind of pee pad most people use ? Does it make any difference ? Last edited by SONYSW; 12-29-2006 at 09:04 AM.

Battle of the potty plan Dudley is 4 years old and we still battle the potty in the carpet days. We have a doggie door and he uses it to go outside with our pekingese to play or bark when someone pulls in to the driveway. He never goes out it to potty. We take him out every 2 hours when we're home and he goes, but he hates to poop outside. Sometimes my husband will stay out there with him for 20 minutes and as soon as he comes in he poops on the carpet. Other times he goes right out and does his business. For periods of time he will do great and then all of a sudden he starts doing both on the carpets. We have a kennel large enough for a collie that we now put him in when we are at work. I wish we didn't have to confine him but you can't replace the carpet daily. My husband read that Yorkies are difficult to train and need constant reinforcement and strict schedules. I really think it is true. Dudley is super smart but stubborn. He rules the house!

Cody is 13 weeks and we are crate training him. he is really good when we are home. i leave him in the crate for two hours and he comes out for 30 min to potty and play. he goes directly to the wee wee pad. he will have accidents on occasion. we even crate him over night and he hasn't gone in his crate but take a 15 sec pee when he comes out in the morning.....on the pad. but when i am at work and leave the crate door open and that is a whole different story it takes patience and we are all going through it, which makes me feel better.
