| Rehomed 5yr female - freaks at dog park - help! My husband and i have re-homed a 5 yr female yorkie who gets along just fine with our 7yr male. But take her to the dog park and she freaks when new dogs comeher way. She had never been to the dog park before we took her and gets a bit better each trip until a new dog comes to smell her. Can anyone help me with ways to help her get over being scared? |

| Positive reinforcement - always! Find a treat she LOVES and keep a picket full of those. Make this a treat she only gets when she meets other dogs. When she reacts appropriately, reward her with one. When she doesn't, a sharp, no-no should do it. After a while, she'll get the message. Use a clicker. It's a great tool to marking the exact moment she did something right. It could be that she's a little territorial. Unfortunately with a rehomed dog, you never know what they've been through. She could have been picked on or attacked by a strange dog. Either way, it's obvious she hasn't been socialized very well. With that being said, you're going to have to start from the beginning. If you're persistent, you can turn almost any dog around. |

| Easiest solution- Don't take her to the dog park. It is a very scary place.

| [quote=BLowry;3886881]It's a double edged sword. I do use dog parks but only very specific ones that I know well and know the users of. If there is someone I don't know there, I go in without the dogs and feel them out before I bring my dogs in. Some are better then others. Even though there's many close I drive quite a ways for the one I'll take my dogs to. It is good socialazation and exercise of you have a small yard or live in an apartment - I think allowing appropriate oppertunities and places for some off-leash time is healthy for any dog, that said you have to know how to make sure the environment is as controlled as possible.

| [quote=BLowry;3886937]That excluded owners who won't be responsible for their dogs, (stop the bumpers or other dogs that kill the play of others) or pick up after them. I'd pay to go to a park like that!

| Ok so maybe I should add this comment - we have locally a big shore line park where dogs can be off leash and on leash - it has strict rules about how dogs may/may not act. Both my dogs love going and it's about a two mle walk to cover the entire area. So it's also a great area for walking. This is not what many may seee as a typical fenced in dog park whre the dogs run in a closed pin. Even though Amber is timid around other dogs - she loves the walk and for the most part is okay unless she gets spooked. It also does not matter where we take her - she is scared around other dogs. Doe sanyone think that taking her to dogggie day care may help? |

I also would not EVER allow my dogs off leash at a park that wasn't completely fenced in!

| Georgie has never been to a dog park. If she has a playmate at home then that's where I would keep her.

I take Kaji with me everywhere, shopping, vacations, family outings, movies..... We encounter lots of other dogs and people. Kaji gets along with all the pups we meet and we get compliments on how well behaved he is and how nice he interacts with dogs of all sizes. I understand not everyone does this, but this is the benefit to him visiting dog parks or doggy daycare. Too bad I don't have a dog park or day care facility I like to take him too. At the moment we do play dates with my friends and their pups. It makes him so happy!
