Rehomed 5yr female - freaks at dog park - help!

I carry my babies with me when I go places....but I am not concerned about them getting along with strange dogs in strange places....that is not a situation they are ever exposed to so it isnt important to them or me. They sit quietly in my "purse", and we go to resturants, art exhibits, Lowes, Home Depot, the walking trail, etc, and they watch and observe and behave like perfect little angels...even if someone does see them looking out of the purse and they approach, the babies would gladly meet and greet with no problem, but I dont allow it....it isnt important to me so it isnt important to them....no one usually even knows they are there, which is fine with me...there again, it is not important to me that strangers interact with my babies....they are around other family members and they know the vets and vet techs and groomer and they behave fine with them...that covers the only people that I allow my dogs to interact with! I have a big back yard and they get all the running and playing and exercise they need right on my own property, with my other pups that I KNOW have been wormed, vaccinated, no fleas, and are not vicious or a health threat!

Like I said, to each their own. I like my dog to have friends. The OP is of the same mindset as rescuemomma and I and wanted help with her pup. Why are we arguing this instead of helping her?

OP, I hope someone gives you some good advice. I have a different problem with my own pup. He loves other dogs but is terrifie of people. We're working on it though. The only advice I can give you is don't rush change, it's not going to be helpful at all. I tried it when I wanted Kaji to adapt to people, but it didn't work.

People (and dogs) seem to either love dog parks or hate them.

Some see them as one big playground and others see the danger.

I tried to take Lucy to the dog park - but it was obvious she was terrified each and every time. She did not engage with any of the dogs who even tried to play with her.

Even at the dog park - she was the smallest one there and she could probably sense my nervousness at that.

OP, with a rehome -you really might not know all that happened to her before she came to your home. You may be able to get her to enjoy the dog park by employing some of the suggestions made; or she may never really enjoy large groups of dogs. Time will tell.

Either way, I assure you, she can be a happy and well-adjusted dog with or without a dog park.

I am sorry, but I do NOT like dog parks...just me, I guess...you never know what any of these dogs have been exposed to...in my mind, this is a wonderful place to pick up worms, fleas, ticks, PARVO, vicious dogs,etc....Sorry for offending all the dog park lovers here, but too much risk involved for what you get in return....I am with your dog! DOG PARKS SCARE THE PEEDOODLE OUT OF ME!
