| Is this normal Yorkie behavior? (potty training) I've had Paisley for about 4 weeks now. She has done great with her potty training. She was even going to the door sometimes. I am crate training her and taking her outside to go. I am very consistant and I don't let her have run of the house. she is either confined to one room with me, or on a leash with me. However... the last 3 or 4 days paisley has been a real stinker about her pottying! First she went pee in her carrier! Somethign she has NEVER done before. I had just took her outside to potty and then put her in the carrier to go home (we had been at work). When we got home, I went to get her out and noticed she had went pee in there! Then in her crate at home, it's a wire play-pen type with room for her bed and a potty pad. She has never went on the potty pad until the last 2 nights! She has always whimpered or barked and woke me up to take her out, but not the last 2 nights.. instead she went on the potty pad in the crate. ...which I'd rather her wake me to go out like she was before. Then today while I had her on the leash, she squated down and started to pee right in front of me!!! I said "no no no...outside to potty" and picked her up and took her out. Then tonight while she was on the leash next to me, she squated down and started pooping!!! Again.. "no no no, outside potty" and took her out. I just can't figure out why all of a sudden she's doing this?!! is this typical of a Yorkie? i have never had a puppy to "go backwards" in potty training progress like this. We have had a lot of rain the past few days, could that be part of it? Although it was nice out today. Last edited by Paisley-n-Me; 09-26-2011 at 09:39 PM. |

| I think for a Yorkie any hellish experience is 'normal' when it comes to potty training. Oliver was great about it, didn't go in the house for a couple weeks then one day he peed on the carpet TWICE and pooped in his play pen. Out of nowhere! And the last TWO days he has peed in his crate twice. Totally not like him and I've had him almost 2 months now! Anyway, unfortunately I think both of our experiences are fairly normal and the only way to deal with it is consistency. |

| My baby is almost 5 months now. I had started training her crate to pad style. She was good about it but if you have a rug or a small area rug they will eventually have accidents. So i took it upon myself to start training her to go primarily outside. I want her to do that and its good excercise. I have to take her out multiple times a day so she goes every time and not in the house, but yest she did have a pee pee accidnet on the rug. i am now not allowing her anywhere in the house unless with me. that means when i am in the shower, she is in the bathroom, or when we are home and watching tv she is in her playpen or on the couch with me. |

| I have 2 questions for you, maybe 3. How long was Paisley out to potty before you put her in the carrier? Do you walk with her to stimulate needing to pee and do you give her a potty command? (example: go pee pee) Why provide her piddle pads if you don't want her to use them? If she's young, she might need a scheduled potty break.

Yes, when we go outside we do walk around and stay out for quite a little bit. Even in the rain we stayed out for a good little bit. I carried an umbrella ..and yes, I say "paisley let's go potty... go potty now" And she always goes. Sometimes she'll walk around and pee 2 or 3 times. I put the potty pad in the pen "just in case" . In other words if she needs to go when I'm not home (which she doesn't get left at home without me very often and only for short times..2 hours at most). I'm not angry that she used the pad, just wondering why she didn't wake me up like she usually does. Although.. last night she did wake me up as usual and we went out. Yay! I think she knew I was upset with her last night for pooping in th house.. I sternly said " no no..outside!" I think i said it loud enough and to the point that it kind of scared her. All I know is she was a GOOD puppy last night after that and today she's been an angel and is giving bunches of kisses!!! I think she was just being a rebel puppy for the past 2 or 3 days! | |

| It happens! It's the terrier in them. Sounds like you're doing everything right. Tell Paisley not to be such a stinker.

| Just to add... I have successfully potty trained several puppies and even a couple of adult dogs. I will admit though, I never had one doing as good at potty training and then make a complete turn around and be as "off' as Paisley was for those 2 or 3 days. It threw me for a loop. It must just be a "Yorkie" thing??? |

| just the same as my 11 mts yorkie, it took about 9 months for her to get the idea of potty training, I almost gave up that time. she did great for the first 2 months and started to make mess inside the house. she dropped her poo in my room and peed on the sofa. now she knows how to do it properly. I guess for yorkie, it just takes longer to potty train than other type of dogs |

| You sound like you are doing everything you should. I just brought Pita out frequently, literally every 10-15 minutes some days. I work as well and she stays in her large xpen all day. She would pee and poop all over the place in the beginning but it got less and less frequent. I also purchased the UGODOG potty system and it has worked wonders. I only need to change the pad in it every few days because she will only use it once or twice while we are not home. When we are home she scratches at the door to go out. By 7 months I would say she was 80% potty trained and she just made 8 months yesterday and I would say now she's 95%...she pooped once inside bc it was raining last week, who can blame her for that!!! Consistency is key, just when you think you can't handle it another day, it clicks! Last edited by heartmyyorkie; 09-28-2011 at 07:05 AM. |

| It's only been 4 weeks. The fact that they do go outside isn't an indication they're fully trained and understanding that's the ONLY place they can go. We've had Ozzy for 3 months and he's definitely got it now, but there were several times he peed or pooped in the house until he finally figured out that got him a severe NO BAD DOG while going outside got him praise and treats (now just praise - we phased out the treats). The fact she isn't fully trained yet isn't an indication that she's going to be hard to train. Training just takes time. It does seem like you're doing all the right things. Keep it up and it will eventually pay off.

| I am not sure if I am writing this in the right place. This is my first ever forum and I am not sure where to go. So my apologies if this is in the wrong spot. I just got a Yorkie on 10/14/11. He is 12 weeks today. My question is this, Is it better to crate them or put them in a small area if you are going to be gone all day with no one to come walk them? I leave at 7:30 and return at 6:00 pm. i keep seeing different opinions on what;s best as far as training.

Since you are going to be gone so long during the day, I would get a playpen (x pen) of some kind and put bed, toys, water, food dish, and pee pads down. I use Sea Breeze Petite Pens. They are adjustable and can be ordered online.

| Forgot to add, with a pup that small it is best to leave food out for them while your gone. They are susceptible to low blood sugar bc of their size and metabolism. That way they have access to food all day long while you are gone, bc they should really be eating every 3-4 hours at that age.

I also agree that if you dont want her to potty in the house than why are you leaving pads down for her to do so. I think it is confusing to them! Myself I do not agree that you should have food / water in the crate with them. It should be for sleeping only . Instead of going on about how I prefer to train my pups, I will ask that you read my page on training on my web site. Hope it is helpful . . . who knows you may find that trying something new might just be the answer to you problems.
