| Electric fence for yorkies ?? Is it OK to use those invicinble electric dog fences for yorkies ? My aunt uses that for her dogs, they have a collar that gives them a little bit of electricity when they go out of the yard and it helped her so much ! she had a beagle that ran away constantly so that helped her alot My yorkie, if the door is a little bit open he is gone ! No way to catch him I would LOVE to be able to have him loose in the yard (though I would never have him alone in the yard , I'm always with him) without him running away and dont need to panic all the time about him getting loose. How do you put down this kind of ''fence'' ? is it hard or can I get something that is really easy to put down in the ground ? I dont wanna make this some big mess , I want to find the easiest way possible Its not an option for me to put a fence around the garden, it costs way to much I can't afford it.

| Baby gates in front of doorways and a tie out outside so your pup can run with your supervision. No on the fence.

| I agree with Ellie May, I would not use an electric fence, especially not for a Yorkie. Although the fence companies say the shock is perfectly safe, other sources say that it can affect your dog's health. Secondly, electric fences do not protect against predators. If your dog is outside, I would advise that you are there too to supervise, even with a tie out. My neighbor's 13-pound Yorkie was mauled by a hawk recently. Another local had her little chihuahua killed by 2 loose big dogs. The chi was alone in the front yard with an electric fence. Third, Yorkies are smart and among the dogs likely to figure out that they can get through the "shock" part of the fence and make it to the other side. Then they are off and running. They are unlikely to risk the shock to get back inside their yards. Skip the electric fence. We also use babygates in our house to keep the dogs from the doors that lead to the outside.

| I agree with no on the fence. Yorkies are so tiny and those things can really really hurt them.

| Ellie May, I dont tie him outside cause then the cat plays with him and he always gets tangled The cat is so evil running around and sometimes he gets loose (He pulls his collar off !). I have a baby gate but I cant put the babygate where the main door is , I can only put it in the other door that leads to the garden. My aunts dog only went over the line once and got a shock, since then she always was just in the garden, she knew right away that she couldnt go out of the garden, Fido would propably just go few times out of the garden and then learn. Ofcourse I would ALWAYS be outside with him, I would never leave him in the garden without supervision, I would be there with him allways when he's outside, also he does not like being outside alone he would bark then constantly, so I have to be outside with him Fido is no small yorkie he is somewhere between 14-15 pounds My aunt uses this electric fence for 3 dogs, all very healthy =) Im moving soon, we havent found an apartment yet but I hope we find some apartment or house with fenced yard that would be the best... Im just wondering about this electric fence for the future, I will most likely move to my aunt in the US in few years and take Fido with me, she has electric fencing and then I would propably buy a collar for him so he could also run loose in the yard but I would ALWAYS be there outside with him. How can this affect the health of the dog? what can happen if I would use this kinda collar? I would OFCOURSE use the collar first on myself !

| those type of fences werent made for toy dogs they were meant for bigger dogs. I believe you can affect your dog neurologically by using it long term

| I would never use one of those fences. I see no reason to train a dog in such a fashion. Additionally, they do nothing to prevent attacks from other animals. If a person is always outside with their pup, I don't understand the absolute need for a fence.

I would never use an electric fence. For one, I don't believe in shocking a dog for anything. Two, they are just not known to be very safe or reliable.

| I personally think an electric fence is mean and I have heard stories of many dogs taking the shock to go chase after another animal or car also it doesnt keep animals out so a bigger dog could come right over and into your yard and mess with your dog. Also if your tying your dog outside you should not hook the tie to his collar it is not good for him especially if he is pulling.

| Electricity's just uncomfortable. I personally wouldn't want anything hurting my baby, even just a little bit for a brief moment. May as well just swat him when he pees or nips at me but I wouldn't consider doing that either. I really don't care for the idea of these fences for larger or smaller dogs. Additionally, Yorkies are the MOST beautiful and sought after of all of the breeds. Anyone could waltz in and steal him. It looks like they are just wandering loose.

OP, have you considered training at the door? If you can't do baby gates, what you can do is have your pup in a sit stay before you open it. Once in a sit stay, leash him up (in case he darts) and watch him as you attempt to open the door. As soon as Fido starts to get up, close the door. The goal is to have Fido in a sit, stay while you go about your business at he door. If he is allowed out, then he'll wait for your command or to be led out. It will be a tedious and long training process, but I'm sure he'll learn. You can even put a sign at the door for visitors to let them know why it's taking so long to come to the door.

| Invisible fence? I just bought the PetSafe Little Dog Invisible Fence system. My two guys are 5# and 9#. My subdivision is very family oriented, and it seems every 10+ age child is driving a golf cart around. It drives my guys nuts. I take them out to potty, and when the inevitable golf cart shows up, it's a chase situation -- not fun in 100 degree heat. It's not the first vehicle I'm worried about -- it's the one coming from behind that will get them. Have had way too many near misses. PetSafe Little Dog is supposed to be safe for very tiny 3# -- 4# dogs... I'll let you know how it works. Gotta do something. My guys potty outside. |

| I just have to ask: What ever happened to walking a pup on a leash?
